It's almost all on Netflix, just added this year in 2 big chunks. Maddeningly, the final 2 hour episode is missing out of the bunch.

It's well worth the watch on Netflix, as you can binge big chunks. It really brings out how quickly the show changed and morphed, from the big changes after season 3, to the more mature subjects as the show went on.

krisc  ·  3423 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What Difference Do Expensive Headphones Make?

I have two pairs of headphones, a pair of Harman Kardons and a pair of Grado headphones. I also use as pair of Sony studio monitors at work. The difference in each pair is incredibly different. Stepping up to a (much) nicer set of headphones is like going from 480p video to 4k video. The sound stage opens up and you can hear so much more that you didn't before. Once you get to the $500+ level of headphone though, as important as good headphones is a good headphone amplifier. The choices are numerous, but they all make a big difference in how music is presented.

krisc  ·  3429 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What book(s) are your favorite read?

My last favorite read was The Dog Stars by Peter Heller.

Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life–something like his old life–exists beyond the airport. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return–not enough fuel to get him home–following the trail of the static-broken voice on the radio. But what he encounters and what he must face–in the people he meets, and in himself–is both better and worse than anything he could have hoped for.

I'm a sucker for post apocalypse fiction, and this was a hugely satisfying read.

The last book I read, The Book of Strange New Things by Michel Faber. A good read with a wholly unsatisfying ending in my opinion. The backstory to his writing it made the book more interesting for me though.

Hello fellow Kel'Thuzad US Alliance player! Been there since release, originally through The Goon Squad.

I haven't played much since around a month or so ago. Got into Diablo III for a bit and now GTA V, but I'm sure I'll rejoin the grind soon enough.

I'm the proud father of a quite internationally travelled 6-year-old, so I've definitely had my share of hazards. We lucked out on the kid lottery and have a fairly thoughtful kid, so it's been ok. I could definitely see sweating a bit on these elevators at first glance, but once you get the idea that you step in and make sure you're all the way in, it doesn't seem too bad.

Although all of this might be a moot point. I'm curious where these elevators traditionally are. I'm sure they don't tend to put them into daycares and things like that. If it's an office setting, your exposure to kids is probably fairly limited.

krisc  ·  3438 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Germany's Doorless Elevators

In what world would your 3-year-old be anywhere near these unwatched? If anything, they'd make you pay MORE attention when you're with your kids, as there is a bit of a false safety sense with normal elevators perhaps (see the handicapped dude in Korea who rammed the elevator doors with his motorized wheelchair and fell to his death, all because he missed his elevator). I'm all for the what-if sentiment but more so what if I didn't pay attention when I should vs. what if these elevators hurt me or someone I was responsible for.

+1 for plug.dj

If anyone in this thread is even mildly interested in music, plug is a great place to register and hang out. Once you find a community of people with music and personalities you like, you'll be hooked.

UPDATE: I've made a hubski room on plug.dj

They've made a lot of improvements to plug as of late, to the point that it works better now than turntable did. The UI does take a bit of getting used to. I find the backgrounds pretty unfriendly to the eyes, but use something like pluggedN for Chrome and you'll get custom backgrounds and auto-woot features.

krisc  ·  4288 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Have you ever been in a play, on television or in a movie?

I was on 3 different relationship/dating shows, but not as the guy in the relationship. A Dating Story, Perfect Proposal, and Blind Date. I worked in the rock climbing industry, and was "lucky" enough to be the person who got to deal with the TV crews and couples when they came in to the climbing gyms I worked at.

It's where I learned how horrible TV/Film crews are, and now I work for a production company as one of the horrible crew members. Life comes full circle.

krisc  ·  4329 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Do you think we'll achieve immortality before the end of this century?

There's a really fun sci-fi novel called The Postmortal by Drew Magary on this exact topic. Well written, and goes from the discovery to the repercussions decades later following one person who gets the "cure."

http://www.amazon.com/Postmortal-Novel-Drew-Magary/dp/B007SR...

If we do happen to somehow achieve immortality before the end of the century, the glory of it all won't last long. The coming ecological catastrophe that is global climate change will make sure most people won't be sticking around more than they should be. The level of change and cooperation needed to avoid it is impossible if somehow we decide that we deserve to be on earth longer than was ever designed.

krisc  ·  4378 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Mark Cuban rips NBA a new one over Power Balance bracelets

Yeah, these things are unbelievably scammy. When I used to run a climbing gym long ago, we had someone come in trying to sell these things. I told her no, but she insisted on proving to me how well they work. I let her do the little demonstration that Mindwolf linked in another comment, and it was fairly easy to pick up on what was going on. I explained to her that I not only thought her product was a complete crock, but that she was even worse for knowingly scamming people with trickery like that.

It's unbelievable to me that the same thing a door to door scam artist was doing years ago is now promoted by the NBA.

krisc  ·  4383 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Spotify and its discontents

This story reminds me of why I like turntable.fm so much. It's a chance to share your music on a personal level and have others do the same. I've found more music I enjoy in the last year there than in all the years randomly dumping money into CDs based on their cover art or dubious record store employee recommendation (those that would deem me cool enough to talk to anyway). It's when I have a story to go with the music or a background on a song, then I go to spotify and find out more and explore deeper.

I'll stick with the modern graces of technology.

krisc  ·  4575 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: "Hövding is a bicycle helmet unlike any other currently on the market."
Agreed. There's been decades of research that's gone into the modern bike helmet. As long as you're wearing it correctly (which is a discussion all its own) you're going to be well protected from a lot of head injuries. Though I appreciate new approaches to stuff like this, I'd like to see far more in the way of test results for a helmet like this before I personally use one. Right now, I know that a standard bike helmet strapped onto my head is not going to "mis-deploy" in a crash.

Highwayman -- Arbouretum or Crippled Black Phoenix - Time of Ye Life/Born for Nothing/Paranoid Arm of Narcoleptic Empire. Honestly, I would probably want a 3-hour mixtape listening party kinda thing, because I'd love to do silly, epic, and inspirational.

That's the flipped up visor of the knight's helmet actually, but I see it as eyes every time too, even knowing what it is. That landscape one worked out well for the tilt shift effect and ended up better than I thought it would be. Thanks tng!

Thank you! I guess I'm partial to Castle Guard part 1 more than the others for some reason. Maybe it's all that Game of Thrones recently.
krisc  ·  4590 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Does Hubski's format and functionality solve the issues that Reddit now faces?
Your point about following people is a good one, but I'm terrible about browsing /all (/lurking). I really hate the idea that I'll miss something good from someone I don't follow. I'm a hubski baby though, so I'm sure I'll learn to use it more efficiently as time goes on.

It's a great site already, and one I visit daily. Thanks for all the hard work, and thanks to all of the great hubski community so far!
