So to address MY problems with reddit, I think the most important focus should be insuring that the discovery tools are robust and effective, and do not cause less popular sharers to be drowned out.
- In theory, people with different interests and senses of humor can coexist without forcing one group to want to shoot themselves in the face.
Insom's insight in to her twitter experience as compared to Da XperincE Ov sUm Utter uzeRs, is a good one.... though I think the HR department may take issue with some verbiage. ecib's assertion that everyone probably has a core topic or two that they are interested in is a good one. I am fond of saying that people don't interact with topics, they interact with people but that's not entirely true. When we get to know somebody initially, we almost always do so through a topic -sports, work, book club etc. Then, we get to know that person better and a broader spectrum of topics emerge. That's how I see Hubski. If I were a new user, I would likely start off following a few tags that interest me and then begin to recognize users that frequent those tags. I know that as Hubski evolves the discovery and suggestions will evolve too and become far more helpful. It's early yet. I am very excited to see how this scales, hopefully we'll get that chance. We are growing due to word of mouth and we appreciate it. Spread the love, the more the better imo! That said, thanks for posting this metafive and welcome to Hubski!
What I'd love to see on here, or even reddit for that matter, is a way to tag posts. Off the top of my head, I'd love to see a little carrot drop down item that would let you tag posts with things like meme, meta, troll, low-content, off-topic, etc. Let the group moderate, and then let users decide on a threshold for when something gets hidden. Only let people tag stuff that have been registered longer than a week say, to prevent people from abusing it. People will always flock to content. It's why I went to digg orginally, it's why I went to reddit when digg became memes and pics and recycled internet funny pictures, and it's why I came to hubski when reddit became that. The cycle will continue as long as people who post great content post it here. I'd just like a better way to filter out the dumb eventually.
Trying to figure out ways to keep the content high quality is always the goal. Thanks again for the suggestion. Keep them coming, we're listening.
It's a great site already, and one I visit daily. Thanks for all the hard work, and thanks to all of the great hubski community so far!
We're all Hubski babies, early adopters rule!
Also, mk, there's no way to unignore the person that I used to try out something on this thread. :(
Another possibility is that you can not only follow people, but simply mark them as favorites or something. These people would tend to filter up to the top in a post's comments. Still thinking on these things. Try http://hubski.com/ignoring?id=thundara. You can reach it through clicking on your name in the upper right. EDIT: Poor Lu. :(Also, mk, there's no way to unignore the person that I used to try out something on this thread. :(
The initial news.arc code, (which is an older version of Hacker News) is open-source (in /lib). But Hubski has diverged quite a bit from that (HN has too, to a lesser degree, I think).
