I just bought my daughter and myself bike helmets...holy crap they aren't cheap! Also got a device that she can sit in that I tow behind my bike (also not cheap). Hadn't rode a bike in years and it's harder than I remembered, probably because I'm towing a small child.

I think I'd feel safer with an old school helmet though.

Agreed. There's been decades of research that's gone into the modern bike helmet. As long as you're wearing it correctly (which is a discussion all its own) you're going to be well protected from a lot of head injuries. Though I appreciate new approaches to stuff like this, I'd like to see far more in the way of test results for a helmet like this before I personally use one. Right now, I know that a standard bike helmet strapped onto my head is not going to "mis-deploy" in a crash.

Michigan just passed a law that lets motorcyclists ride without helmets. I saw my first one yesterday on the highway and it freaked me out. This morning when I merged in from the on ramp, another guy, not wearing a helmet was perfectly in my blindspot. I always even look over, not just the mirror, and didn't spot him. Luckily, he was in the far lane. He probably never realized I got on without seeing him. Motorcyclists need something like this, but they successfully lobbied for nothing.

As a motorcycle rider I am severly bummed out we don't have a helmet law.

I rode in Ohio with some friends a while back. I told them there was no way I was dropping my helmet once we crossed the state line. First tank of gas in that state and they are getting back on their bikes sans helmet. I chastised them, but they had no problem ignoring me. Then I thought about how I'd like to experience, just once, what it is like to ride without a helmet. I'm absolutely ridiculously cautious and defensive when on my bike, and this was out of character for me, but nevertheless I decided to experience riding that way once.

It was, hands down, the most euphoric ride I have ever been on. The closest analogy I can think of is that it is like the difference between sex with a condom on and sex without (sorry ladies, you'll just have to trust me that this is a big deal). It almost defied words how great it was. I had my helmet dropped then entire time we were in Ohio.

So yeah. I really really hate even having that option now. A lot.

Yeah, what mk said. Lest you want the equivalent of HIV, an unwanted child or genital warts --sticking with your analogy.

I think that's a fair extension of the analogy.

Dude, wear the helmet. I don't want to splatter your brains. It's not about how you ride, it's about how we drive.
ecib  ·  4572 days ago  ·  link  ·
I know that, believe me. I've no plans to go without it.

And also, Michigan roads are shit. It's wrong to let people ride without helmets when the roads are so treacherous.

Yeah...bad roads, bad drivers, high vehicle density...the list goes on.
