mk, would you be willing to divulge some traffic stats or other data?
I would really love to see some sort of "statistics" page, I'm a huge stat nut. For example, total number of users, new users that day/week/month, total/unique page views for the day/week/moth, that sort of thing. It's one thing I absolutely love about moderating subreddits, the ability to monitor the traffic stats.
Everyone wants to see under the skirt. :) I can appreciate that. I have a stack of "to do's" in front of me, but I can add something like that to it. 'tmi' on the bottom right might satisfy a bit of curiosity, but I know that many would probaby appreciate some more insight. I think it would be interesting if a user could get personal stats for his/her posts.
I gained approx 28 followers over the last 24 hours. I feel pretty. ♫
Welcome, enjoy your time here. Even if you don't post anything, enjoy poking around. I always suggest checking out the "badges" on the left hand side under "discover". -Have fun, any feedback is always welcome.
Thanks... After I started becoming quite disenchanted with Reddit I had been playing around with the idea of a aggrigator like hubski where you follow people instead of voting for content but never had the time or knowledge to put it together, so seeing the concept in action, as well as knowing that it works is quite fulfilling. After the first day though I have thought that it would be nice to know which users are feeding in new content and which are sharing (curating might be a better word) existing content. I say this only because I found myself struggling after first signing up figuring out who else to follow so that I'd get stream of content from various sources (and not just one user). Since the community is still relatively small I eventually got everything worked out, but it will be interesting to see how the idea scales when the number of posters and the number of "content curators" gets bigger.
Additional Thoughts:
Unfortunately this brings up an strong parallel to power users (who may or may not be a good thing for the site) and I quite like the process of discovery that happened when I joined, where I would follow and unfollow different users and topics to get my feed looking the way I liked it. So at the end of the day, I'm not sure if I actually want this feature or not, just thought I'd through it out there to think about.
Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. It's nice to see your thought process. Because I've been on the site for so long it's hard to take a look at it with fresh eyes. Any other feedback you have regarding what it was like to first join up and what was cumbersome are most welcome. I also really appreciate it when people bring up problems and have potential solutions, shows that you put some thought into it and that's always nice. Again, thanks and feel free to pm me any other thoughts. Also if you run in to a problem, feel free to use the #bugski tag.
Hey marble, glad to have you here on Hubski, welcome. If you take a look at the left-hand side of the screen under discovery you will see community. There you can find trending tags and most popular users. This could be a help. I also like to source content from the badges section. Also, check out tmi. Good luck and enjoy. Look forward to seeing you around.
I came here (well more or less fled) from reddit yesterday. I feel like reddit has became a shell of what it once was. So far I've been very impressed with the content as well as the community. You guys rock. I'm still learning the ropes, but I can certainly see myself more active here :)
Suprisingly there has been no reddit hate going round. Suppose Reddit is hubskis alcoholic older brother, who just stumbles in without warning and smashes things.
Most of us are originally from reddit and choose to remember the good ole days before he turned into an alcoholic. I don't think we hate reddit, but it's gotten to a point where it is too far gone and overrun with people that don't post valuable content. I still browse reddit occasionally but most of the time I end up back on hubski within minutes.
A Theoryofreddit post led me here. I've been a redditor for nearly three years and unlike others I'm not entirely unsatisifed with reddit at all. Many have expressed dismay in the fact that insightful comments get buried while one-sentence karma-grabs end up at the top of every thread. While I'm somewhat unhappy with this as well, I also am not particularly interested in grabbing karma or being a power-user. I can browse for the good comments myself. Regarding content, most voice negative opinion on reddit's default pages. That's fine, but for me it's been about specific subreddits that interest me for at least the last two years of my tenure there. I don't need to browse the front page because I go to subreddits that aggregate the the specific content I want. I don't need to waste my time wading through the imgur posts on the front page (which really aren't as bad as many make them out to be) because I go straight to where I want to. And if a new subject piques my interest I find the subreddit for it and peruse. I think users of reddit should spend some time on focusing their browsing habits. The best part of the site is its sub communities. And no matter the point to which the website matures thoughtful content can thrive in these places. I Checked this place out a little and I'm excited about how the community has a potential to evolve. I'm not aware of a concept that works exactly like this and I think that the elements of twitter and reddit together could potentially make for a great website.
#reddit #newuser #hubski #Rat
I definitely think that some communities have grown better than others. I frequent r/leagueoflegends, and while the average user is not in tune to how I play or view the game it does a wonderful job of aggregating league content. After all, thats the job of the thing in the first place. I also really don't mind silly content (r/birdswitharms anyone? best sub ever).
me too, however, I have never bothered to stick with one account on reddit for too long, which makes it difficult to customise. I downloaded RES, but it was horrible. maybe it got better, i dont know, i never went back. but honestly, i'm a bit over it. I have a science degree, and the amount of waffle even in the subs puts me off.
AH I MISSED A FUCKING REDDIT EXPLOSION!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Anyways, I'm glad to get a chance to meet all you new people though. Hubski is the BEST.
As someone who's been known to write lengthy emails at work, I've often been called upon to decode lengthy emails from others for my colleagues and superiors. Given the circumstances behind this one, I can only imagine the amount of turbulence you've caused. Hat tip your way.
I remember when mk first posted about hubski (I think it was on HN [1]). I wasn't interested then, Reddit was fine and HN was too much biased towards enterpreneurship and Apple. So I stayed with Reddit. But now, seeing that Hubski caught on, I joined.
It's the little hub in the upper right hand corner. The more little dots you get filled the closer you are to getting a badge. once you get a badge you can use it to highlight a post that you think is really good. It's the next evolution of karma.
Well, I'll go on record and say I'm a new user via the /r/TrueReddit post from earlier. So far, I'm really enjoying it here. The community reminds me of the Reddit days of old and the content being posted is pretty stellar. I'm glad to have found it.
I'm here from reddit, too. I don't know if it will pull me away from reddit completely, but I'll definitely be checking in every day. So far I like the actual, meaningful conversations that happen here, and are relatively rare on reddit today. I've been looking for an alternative to reddit for while, so maybe when I get the hang of this more, I'll switch over.
Also guilty. This seems a lot easier to navigate. Excited for this content.
To be fair, I've never posted any link on reddit, much less cats.
Honestly I think this site can do very well even with an influx of people. I'm very new here but to me it seems very obvious that filtering content is very within reach even to a newbie. And as users grow content will multiply and diversify without necessarily cluttering your personal view. Not only would it benefit this site to have more people, I think that it's absolutely necessary for it to be used to its full potential as a concept.
Yup, the biggest detriment to reddit is having visible and permanent karma and content that is tied to a particular category. Since the tags are fluid here, communities can better curate the content and drive away the memes.
1) Syncretic griped in /r/TheoryofReddit 2) I needed 20 minutes to get my head out of my Mother-in-law's need to put fucking NFPA stickers on my 100%IPA so I ranted 3) Syncretic posted that rant to /r/bestof, where it became visible to 1.8 million people 4) 650 new users in 12 hours. Hubski is emailing me about 12 times an hour at this point from all my new followers. On the plus side, I'm not getting 100+ variations on "is not/are too" in my email, unlike my Reddit inbox. I'll be honest - I'd grown ambivalent about Hubski over the past few weeks and its inability to deal with controversy. However, when you've got 200 people expecting you to say something clever because your words brought them over the wall from Reddit, you feel a little obligated to provide. Look at it this way: the people who are happy with Reddit are not part of the new Hubski influx. And look at it another way: a big post on Reddit brings 600 new Hubski members. A big post on Digg brought a million to Reddit.
I think the number of new Hubski users is at about 850 now. The total population of Hubski is right around 5,000. So if you consider, they've had a nearly 20% increase in useres in the past two days. While it may not look like a lot "when put in perspective of the digg migration," that's not really the best comparision you could make. You're comparing an already-heavily trafficked website (reddit, which was not only 4k users at the time of the Digg debacle) with one which is, let's be honest, pretty small(Hubski - 4050 users 2 days ago). It would be a much better comparision if you could get a count on how big Reddit was before the Digg exodus and see how much it increased, via percentages or etc.
That post made it to the front page though... Meaning who knows who could be joining. That said, as of now I feel it's not an issue. The people that want to leave reddit are the ones that are sick of its nuances and most likely don't embody the obnoxious aspects that are killing reddit. Edit: spelling
Yep. Same exact post I saw and was like "What the hell is Hubski?". I clicked over and figured I'd sign up. Although, at first I was a bit confused. The Hub and Badge systems are cool and different indeed, but I just didn't understand for the first half hour. This is very enjoyable as I don't have to constantly refresh the page and read every new thing on my front page. I like that the content is of fairly slow volume and it creates less of a reading-only environment to a participation environment.
Just got here, no strong feelings yet about Hubski. I'm also not one of the people crying over Reddit and wishing things were different. I like the tag idea, though! Looking forward to getting used to this.
I'm new here. Hello. Part of the Great Reddit Migration.
There is a learning curve but once you "get it" it is really easy to navigate and actually makes more sense than reddit in a lot of ways. The biggest advantages of not having subreddits is you can avoid the people that post shit content. I follow everybody and then unfollow them when I start noticing that I'm not really into their content. It's worked out pretty good so far, although this explosion of new users is seriously hindering this strategy. In theory, Hubski can be like twitter in the sense that people who like to post X content can have a little cluster, while not affecting the rest of the users on hubski. For example, there are a ton of people on twitter who solely tweet "SMH DIS BOY IS CRAY CRAYYYYYY!" but I never have to see them.
I came here from Reddit. So far so good. I am mostly a lurker there though, so I am going to make an effort to be more of a presence on here.
I came here a couple of days ago from reddit. FINALLY found somewhere a little less crowded with less children posting crap. I'm surpriced by how well I like it, but I would like to know more about how to find tags etc...(?)
Hi jesse9212, you can just make a post with your suggestion. If you want mk to notice it just put the '@' symbol on both sides of his name and mention him in the post. It's called a 'shout out' and it will alert him that he was mentioned in a post and direct him to it. For example: Hey mk' Jesse has a suggestion. Got a minute? He should pop up when he logs on if he's not too busy...
Came over just now, myself. Don't intend on posting anything any time soon, but i am more likley to do so when I grok the organization around here, I'm sure.
Heinlein reference in first comment. You will do well here!
New user from reddit here. I used the same username over there and was hanging around reddit for about 3 years before that. It's nice to see hubski and the features it has to offer. I'm looking forward to exploring and discovering what hubski has to offer.
I'm new from reddit. Hubski seems to focus on individual contributors and topics. It feels like it takes the best features of tumblr, twitter, and reddit and puts them into one site. I'm going to try it out, the community seems much more relaxed here. There's no "hivemind" feeling yet. On Reddit I felt like every comment came from the hivemind. Here, I see individual contributors posting things. I like it.
I am a new user here, and I signed up because I found reddit much too reliant on quick to read image posts, as well as silly "witty" comments that contributed nothing. Looking at the top popular posts here is refreshing. I'm still figuring out the site, but I quite like it so far!
I just signed up after finding a link on Theory of Reddit. The lack of circlejerking is very refreshing here. Reddit has been devolving for quite some time. I'm not totally over reddit because there are some fantastic subs there. However, the simplicity and content of hubski is great. I'll definitely be returning on a regular basis.
Came over from Reddit too. Kind of how blisss put it, I've been on reddit for a bit over a year and I'm starting to see the reposts, the repeating threads on AskReddit (which is a decent subreddit, I like the stories that pop up there sometimes), but what's the worst is that there's so much crap there that you sort of become accustomed to it and just filter through it in hopes of finding something genuinely interesting. It's also hard to have a discussion anywhere because by the time you get to a thread, it's already been filled with comments and upvoted the hell out of, so your post will not even show up anywhere. Hopefully Hubski won't disappoint!
Aaaahhhh, you got me. Just signed up about 5 minutes ago. This place looks really clean.
I came here from your Reddit post. I've been curious for a long time now as to how long Reddit would last as my go-to social community on the internet. As a Redditor for over 6 years (including lurking), I've seen the site utterly transform over and over again. The wealth of information and support that I get from the subreddits that match my interests keeps me coming back, but it's impossible to deny that the community as a whole has suffered from it's own popularity. I'm here to see if this might be the next thing.
I wouldn't necessarily say I came from reddit, more like passed through it on my journey to finding a place worthy of spending my time. After a few days on reddit, I quickly took note that it was not a place I would want to stick with in the long run but I was unaware of any sites with a similar layout though where I could weed out a lot of the irrelevant, inane discussions and general clutter. It is hard to filter a lot of the internet out so you end up becoming numb to the bogus antics or slowly succumbing to the nonsense and ultimately transforming into one of 'them', even if it is just a charade you put on to cope with it all. Internally, I yearned for a place like this and am hoping it does not disappoint.
the theory of reddit post got best of-ed...so yeah, lots new. i...being one of them.
I came because I was curious. I like discussion far more than entertainment and on reddit it seems harder and harder to find discussions to participate in.
I came to Hubski after being linked to this /r/TheoryOfReddit post by /r/bestof.
I was on Reddit for 4 years and went through 3 accounts. After the digg migration I moved deep into the subreddits. The problem with that is they either die from lack of attention or are invaded from the front page through an /r/bestof post. I like the way you can tag a post here without having to create a subreddit around it, so a super specific category doesn't get lost in a sea of cats and youtube videos.
http://hubski.com/pub?id=50268 An API is being written so mobile Android and iOS readers can be developed :) But any specific ideas you have can just be made into a post for comment while letting mk know as well. Feedback is good.
Well, you certainly got my attention. I feel I can add to conversation here and not be drowned out by silly pictures and empty conversation.
I just signed up after reading that reddit post. However, I was just a lurker back on reddit and thought this might be a good chance to start fresh and contribute.
plus 1, hello - I came here yesterday from a reddit home page story, the aforementioned theory of reddit (I think) talking about the middle reddit era and the new reddit era and that reddit has become less serious conversation (more crap + ?more fun)- I never got as far as signing up for reddit, just used it to see a snapshot of the world news and TIL, prob still will. I like the idea of both worlds - a place for serious discussion, and a place for comedy cats. Good luck hubski people - hope you're not just in it to sell out for the big bucks!
I signed up in the last five minutes, after initially following the link from reddit yesterday, because I like the fact that comments appear to be positive and generate real discussion. I'm looking forward to discovering the site and already prefer the format over reddit.
I'm one of those as well. I lurked last night, then went back to the front page of Reddit, and realized how pervasive the memes and bad jokes were. I guess it's something I never really noticed before - I read only a handful of subreddits, and most of them are well-moderated or simply small. But I like the conversations here that I've read so far.
I read a post about hubski on reddit this morning. I really like how much cleaner hubski looks and the community looks more interested in having actual conversations and content than just memes and random comments.
I came today from Reddit. I wouldn't say I'll leave reddit for good, but I'm just a lurker there. I've never commented in fear of being shot down. I'm still trying to figure this place out, but I like it so far.
Came from reddit through the TheoryofReddit post. Went through a few Reddit accounts (because too much of my personal information slowly got out). Hopefully I can be a little better about that here. I love the set-up of Hubski. Very minimalist. Great content here, as many posters have said. Funny to think that in only a few years Digg would make a resurgence in terms of content quality, and that Reddit is approximating the cesspool of Digg's last few months.
I signed up because of Reddit, and let me tell you, I think I'm the youngest user here, easily 2-3 years younger than the second youngest, or it seems that way to me. I've never had so much intelligent conversation pop up on the same website. ME LIKEY.
I wandered over from Reddit out of curiosity. I have used Reddit for less than a year, and I already felt like the stuff I was seeing was not as quality as what was there when I started, and I started after the image macro invasion. I still like Reddit, I haven't given up on it completely, but I do like the somewhat smaller community. It makes interacting much easier, it's not quite like scrolling through all of the comments from the "Reddit Celebrities" to get to the average Joe posts.
I think that is a good thing though. Only the intelligent will migrate and leave the memebags to do their thing.
Me too. But I don't really know what I'm doing on here yet.
Redditor from theory of Reddit reporting in.
while your choice of name, abcunt, seems dicey, insomniasexx is one of the most intelligent, fun posters here. Hey insomm - I must admit your name gave me a pause at first, but that picture of you and thenewgreen at a California meetup was awesome! (signed, a fan)
Yeah, insom is definitely top shelf. That California meet-up was the most brief meet up in history. I was fortunate to hang with insom at the NC meet up too though and that was an absolute blast!
