steve, here's that animatic I brought up. "Finished it" (it's due at midnight), so I'm cutting my losses and letting ya'll check it out.
Hope ya like it. Bomb-ass music is in the description
Dude. Dude. Dude. Her is not about a guy marrying a computer. It is a movie about forgiveness and apologies. The AI could be replaced by a real human at any point and that is the point. Its not about the computers or a lecture about how tech overrules us. Its a statement about being able to forgive others even if we find it hard. As to gentrification I get it. Yeah the movie is lacking significantly there. I'll always have a crush on Jonze if for nothing else than this video: Having said that I hope you continue to make these and share your views on things cause they are fun to listen to. I like that you had a completely different reaction to the film than I did and that you brought up the point about marriage which frankly bothered me too.
Finally watched Her, and I couldn't agree more with you. Her is a movie at least in part about relationships and how we interact with each other and technology for that matter. What makes a relationship unique, how can we ask forgiveness of ourselves if we don't think others will give it to us, how can we adapt to change (both in a relationship and in this case technologically what with the phone sex and all that that I could dive in to), and how to deal with being unsure of what you're doing with your life. The film reminded me of Lost in Translation in a lot of ways, which makes sense because Spike Jonze is married to Sofia Coppola. Cinematography was pretty great too. Then there's everything else we could talk about related to consumerism and technology, the other things I felt were major themes in this film. This review reflects a lot of my feelings about the film.
Not to worry. Jonze has made some amazing films. The one you're talking about seems so cloyingly a white male fantasy that it has to be dissected. He has a wife, but she doesn't "understand" him? I haven't seen the movie. I assume we never get her side of it, because white guys. I assume Herr Pornstache can simply walk away from his failings because white guys. I'll have to bootleg the flick so I can find out and cringe a lot. But yeah, a Los Angeles without blacks or Latinos? It can't be San Diego white without having some kind of traumatic decimation or two.
I do not know anything about the movie (I do not watch them) but I enjoyed watching this. Your voice reminds me of CGPgrey, if CGPgrey ever talked like a normal person. Do you make these types of animations often?
Wow, great video 8bit! It's a point of view I never even considered, thanks for being around to point these things out in a respectful and appropriate manner ;) My favorite part of CGPGrey's podcast about where they discuss Her with Brady (edit: Damn, looks like timstamped youtube videos don't embed correctly :( Skip to 1:10:00 for the funny part.) : I laugh really hard at this part every time. I guess some people take email more seriously than others.
...for broad definitions of "winner." Dunno. I watched Malkovitch and I was like "this dude hates people in a way that I just can't get behind." And then I watched Eternal Sunshine and I was like "and he gives two shits about plot, too." And then I decided I didn't have to watch any more Spike Jonze. It was like watching Death Proof - it convinced me that Tarantino could be safely written off from that point forth.
Points for you. Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman/Michele Gondry are a triumvirate of shit in my book. Combine that with the fact that one of my wife's worst colleagues is a hanger-on who lives in Lance Acord's guest house and that whole universe has been lumped into "irritants to avoid." The fact that I have two cinematographer buddies who masturbate over all of the above with dreary regularity does not help.
No points just discussion! I mean I get where your coming from, but Spike Jonze, in my mind is mostly some kid with a camera and a few ideas. He's not cynical in my mind (unlike Kaufman) he just wants to play with weird toys. Maybe I just get too attached to things when nostalgia is involved. I dunno.
Yeah, he just wants to play with weird toys. But I know those guys, too. The point of the weird toys is to present a compelling narrative to the audience. The "Weapon of Choice" video is awesome, but primarily because it's Christopher Walken tapdancing. Okay, great. But aside from Christopher Walken tapdancing, what are you really bringing to the narrative?
Not even Adaptation? Actually, from what you're saying, definitely not Adaptation.
Thanks. I watched it on a long plane flight, and walked away thinking Her was 'pretty good'. I think the reason was that I hadn't picked up on half the faults that you did, and I was pleased that AI eventually didn't want to hang around with people anymore, because they are too boring, which is what I expect to happen. I am a bit ashamed that I didn't pick up on just how granola the movie was, but I also never picked up on the fact that it was set in LA. I'm sure if they filmed it in Detroit and it was just as white it would have rubbed me wrong.
