I always associate sales with... I don't know... in some kind of negative connotation. It's very interesting to see how psychology plays a huge part in the business, but I wonder how much people who work in sales revere their jobs.

Ads completely turn me off to anything. The way I see it is: if you need to advertise your product... it probably isn't that good anyway. Now, I enjoy McDonald's every now and then but the bulk of the best food I've eaten out has been from locally owned restaurants. I research the product that best fits my needs and sometimes decide to not even buy it.

I guess I just never understood advertisements.

Sounds to me like he just wanted to be Rambo for a minute. With the wars drawing down... we have a lot of combat veterans who are prime candidates for positions within the FBI, police departments, CIA, etc. These guys are highly valued for having been in combat (and some positions within the FBI this is an absolute must.) I wonder if it's going to be a problem having ex soldiers and Marines policing the streets. My understanding was that Brelo is a veteran; not sure if he was in combat or not.

Ah, I've just finished reading a very interesting short on the U.S. Navy: https://medium.com/war-is-boring/the-u-s-navy-s-big-mistake-building-tons-of-supercarriers-79cb42029b8

In order to deliver firepower on a target, the U.S. Navy fields an increasing unaffordable supercarrier which must be escorted by one Aegis cruiser, two destroyers, a nuclear attack submarine and a combined strike force crew of more than 6,000 to carry and launch an air wing of increasingly unaffordable airplanes with inadequate range.

I think it was Switzerland or some other country where they're thinking of implementing a basic living allowance. Many things will be automated and performed by robots -- Conservatively, I say another 15 years before that process begins to snowball. It's been an interesting thought project of mine to imagine an entirely automated McDonald's restaurant. That said, machines are expensive to own and maintain...

Only corporations with access to resources will be able to control them. It's kind of worrisome, to an extent, but this would be a problem for government to tackle: If corporations own the machines, thereby removing the worker, to whom will the profits go? Who will be the ones buying cheeseburgers from McDonald's?

What would you do with your free time if you didn't have to work?

The only thing that would prevent a civilization like this from existing would be the greed and maliciousness of those holding influential positions... clinging to the past and fighting for breath like a dying candle. A system like this is inevitable, but it will require the awakening of the world's population; there's more than enough iPhones for everyone.

Very interesting! This is akin to the discovery of this: http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/shackleton-s-whisky-returned-to-antarctic-hut-1.1304252

glitchinthematrix  ·  3517 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, how do you get your news?

I can't get enough sources. I like to follow everything that's happening in the world at all times. I've been following several issues since as far back as 2006! I enjoy staying up to date on the latest events, but it is certainly time consuming. My sources for news vary depending on what I feel like reading.

For example, I'll go to Tumblr and follow some universities, which lead me to read about current ground-breaking research.

Other news sources include Vice News, NYT, The Atlantic, The Guardian, Reddit, but my most favorite is AP for up to the minute releases. They're arguably one of the most trusted news sources I've come across, and possibly the world tbh.

Following so many news sources leads me to cross-reference with others to fact check or pick up on something one or the other missed. i don't follow any one particular news source... I follow the truth.

glitchinthematrix  ·  3579 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: More college freshmen reporting depression before beginning

Care to elaborate as to why? I started college right after high school, but found it just wasn't for me. I enlisted in the army and developed my IT skills. I realized that unless I further my skills, I was going to be stuck within a certain salary range (although that hasn't been the case yet). Ideally I'd like a 6 digit salary, which isn't as far fetched as it sounds. I'm still working on my skill set and going to college. I'm a sophomore now and I look back at all the mistakes I'd made during my first year of college. I think I'm more prepared now that I'm older, but we'll see.

LOVE alt-j.

I've known about them for some time, and I agree with the general consensus: their first album is great, just slightly better than their more recent release. Taro (video link above) is probably my favorite song from them. The video just complements it so well!

Thanks for sharing.

glitchinthematrix  ·  3582 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Super Bowl roll call: Who is watching, who isn't and why?

Football and violent sports in general don't really appeal to me, to be honest. The controversies surrounding domestic violence in the NFL is something that bothers me also. Football players making millions of dollars, while I struggle to pay rent doesn't appeal to me: It's all a distraction. The NFL is considered a "non-profit" -- can you believe that!? How can anyone in their right mind stand behind this? I don't support the NFL, NHL, NBL, or anything like that. These people are banking billions from my tax dollars.

The system in place to even watch sports is also a bit worrying. It's a slippery slope. I need a flat screen TV with HD reception to watch the game. I have to pay the electricity the TV consumes to watch the game. Which later translates to more money out of my pocket. Then, there's the snacks, and pizza, and drinks... The cycle keeps cycling, the machine keeps machining. We live in Rome, and this is the Colosseum.

From an investment standpoint, I'm all for Detroit. Right now it seems a bit speculative, but I think there could really be something here. Eh, the cold is a problem... I currently live in Florida, and we're seeing an influx of people from up north -- they're just tired of the snow. Right now it's 72* outside, and the northeast just got pounded by a crazy storm.

Either way, houses are dirt cheap in Detroit. I'd buy one and rent it out.

There are probably only ~65,000 Tesla cars in existence, thus; Elon Musk's analysis concludes that Elon Musk will continue to succeed. He's probably right.

I snickered at this, and I agree. Honestly, nothing Elon Musk sets out to do even impresses me anymore. It's just the standard he's set up for himself. It is interesting to see that Solar City was founded with his cousins. Elon understands the importance of family. He himself has like 5 children!

glitchinthematrix  ·  3590 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: USA State of the Union: 2015

It seems as though government and civics isn't really taken too seriously in school. Just recently I completed a basic college course for American government, and the professor posted a few questions from the test immigrants need to pass in order to become citizens. A quick assessment of the class. I found it easy, but many in the class had a hard time.

I understand keeping track of the latest political news isn't necessarily entertaining, but come on... These people run things for us. History always repeats itself; I wonder when people will wake up and take things seriously. The President talks some good points. I felt oddly patriotic after watching this. What do you think?

I understand the dangers of nationalism, but my country's struggles are mine as well. I don't feel America is too bad.

glitchinthematrix  ·  3594 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How Did You Hear Of Hubski?

I doubt it. Even though (at least to my knowledge) there is no clearly written set of rules on what content should be posted or how we should comment on items, I think the community by and large support the status quo as a viable alternative to news and information. I also think the Hubski community will enforce a regimen of quality among users' comments and postings.

glitchinthematrix  ·  3595 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How Did You Hear Of Hubski?

Reddit was getting boring. I couldn't find any thought provoking articles much less thought provoking responses to the articles. One of the few subreddits that try to maintain something even remotely close to thought provoking, /r/TrueReddit, had an article about Hubski. I don't remember much of it, but it was something that went along the lines of calling Hubski the next reddit. Been here a while, and the community is great! Lots of little interesting things to go through.

glitchinthematrix  ·  3603 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Dealing Drugs in a Small Wyoming Town

I read this, and it's very interesting. Drug addiction is much more subtle than one would expect. I have had friends who "sell" just so they could use "for free," which isn't too far from the truth. Street level drugs are highly marked up. That's really all it takes: "Oh, i'll just try it once, blah blah" then, "OH, this stuff is GREAT! Let me buy some more". Then "Ok, this isn't enough, I need to buy a little more just so it lasts me." The sequence of rationalization is almost endless. Eventually it gets to the point where you're using so much (and possibly selling to buy even more) that by this point you've lost yourself. You've forgotten how you started, you've forgotten the reason you're selling in the first place... and you've potentially made enemies. Getting out of the life isn't easy, especially when much of your social life revolves around drugs.

I mean, if you're doing it for the sake of fitness, it's one thing. If you're doing it just to be swoll, then you're right. It is a selfish, first world activity. That said: watch this:

One day I hope to work out here.

I have known people who do this... honestly, though, the crowd is kind of sketchy; more like misfits and druggies.

glitchinthematrix  ·  3676 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Cheapest Generation

I used to own a car. I owned a car up until I got fed up with having to make car payments, insurance payments, payments for high priced gasoline (which comes from an increasingly unstable middle east). I got rid of my car because the materials sourced to make this machine come from many different places. Places where slavery is rampant. Not to mention I'm a slave myself: To the bank. I can't really GO anywhere. I need to be locked down to a job. To keep my car. I got tired of having to buy tires. I got tired of stopping by refueling stations and breathe in the toxic air that surrounds them, and fuel my car with a pump that's been touched by hundreds of thousands of people.

I said fuck it. I moved closer to work, got a road bike, and... surprisingly enough, I'm about as fast as a car still. I don't really need to go anywhere within a 10 mile radius. I am one less car on the road. Less emissions and pollution. Less resources to be used up. My decision for getting rid of the car were multifaceted. Primarily for the sake of saving a fuck ton of money. Then, the environment. Cars are largely an American thing.

My next car will be electric.

glitchinthematrix  ·  3750 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Loneliness in New York

I consider myself lonely. It has made me depressed, sad, reclusive, and aggressive when in a social setting. Growing up hasn't been easy, but I make the best of it and adapt. My depression is temporary (I hope, but at times it doesn't seem so). I've spent my free time using various substances to help me get through this bullshit. For once in a long time... I've gone for a few consecutive weeks sober -- as in not under the influence of something. Before that, it was a daily thing; to use. I've since then sought out help from a professional, and I think talking to her seems to be working a little bit. It gives me a sense of normalcy and routine visiting her. I've got a lot of issues, and I'm still not sure if I trust her 100%.

I am not really a social person -- people I get to know don't meet the high criteria I set for them to be anything more than an acquaintance. My therapist suggests that I force myself to make small talk and get to know people. Anyone! Usually, I fake my social interactions. That only masks who I am to others, but doesn't seem to help me at all. To me it seems like a lot of work. Mentally taxing. My job isn't very social. I work mostly alone with one supervisor and very few opportunities for much needed social interaction.

People that I meet I put them in some kind of tier. Those whom I deem to be less intelligent I tend to use for my benefit. And those who seem interesting and intelligent and worthwhile, I make an effort to get to know them, but I get the feeling maybe I smother them too much. Realizing this about myself pushes me further away from people, which certainly doesn't help the situation. I'm trying... I really am. I'd like to be a better person that can functionally contribute.

glitchinthematrix  ·  3900 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Grantland feature on Schoolboy Q

I like these Grantland articles. I just recently started getting into listening to Schoolboy Q, and I like his sound and his lyrics. It's fucking trippy seeing someone come from literally nothing to having something that this person could never imagine. He seems like a hard worker.

What an awesome performance! This article really helped me understand so much more about juggling. The author says it best:

Jugglers don’t have to perform difficult tricks to entertain people, because audiences generally don’t know what’s difficult. Juggling five objects is 10 times harder than juggling four, and six objects is 10 times harder than five, but to most people, five objects in the air looks like six, and six looks like five.

Looking at this Cirque video... it really shows just how masterful he is at his craft:

But then came a guy who wasn’t interested in lying, who wanted to do stuff that was hard because he could.

The changes have been slow, almost unnoticeable. But, we're here. This is the age of big data, analytics, tracking, predicting. We're at a critical point where we need to decide if we should embrace this new technology or reject it. Then again, it might be inevitable. I wonder if we'll ever know true privacy.
