There's a seriously problem with Apathy right now. Why should we care? It's none of our concern. In a society that puts everything in the corner of individual rights and freedoms we begin to lose our sense of community. And it's one thing to dream, but it's another thing entirely to work with people to express this dream to the people around you, and to find the common ground needed to make a huge dream a reality. At the beginning of the 20th century we had hundreds of people trying to develop a way to fly. How nuts is that? We're earthbound by nature, and these folks like the Wright Brothers (who flew in 1903) Gustav Whitehead (who flew a couple years before 1903) discovered new and exciting ways to travel. Within sixty years we were on the moon. The. Moon. How do we not dream like this anymore? Do we think we've done it all? We'll find our dream, hopefully soon. I pray we're simply in a transition period, looking for a new avenue to walk, and struggling to break the bonds pop culture have on our souls.
I think you and Wong are saying the same thing, you just don't know it. The dirt is important. It holds the nutrients and water and such that makes the tree grown, and that's what the tree turns into fruit. Your internal self is what creates your external actions. The things you DO don't just happen, they're a reflection on the you that nobody can see, the you that you have to talk to in your own head all the time (man I hope that wasn't too many yous). The Bible says your faith is shown by your works. Whether you're Christian or not, the principle applies. You can't say you're a charming, lovable person if all you do is sit in your room and never talk to anyone. Even if it's true, it doesn't matter if you hide it. That was the point of the article. Throw yourself out there and get blasted to pieces. At least the different pieces can make a pretty awesome mosaic.
I've only been a member of Reddit since the spring, and it didn't take long to get tired of the same old business as usual. The OC on Reddit can be spectacular, especially on /r/BestOf (especially after the no-default rule), but it's still so few and far between that at times it doesn't seem worth it. Hopefully Hubski will avoid this.
As inspiring as that all is, I dunno if I agree with it. It all just seems overly relative. At some point there are concrete bounds that things fall within.
Just today I started following someone (who also now follows me) after we had a long, thorough discussion in which we had a couple disagreements. It was refreshing to be able to have an actual discussion where everyone was happy even if nobody technically "won".
So it's safe to say that it's been a good 24 hours!
In other news: I really enjoy the search function. It seems to be pretty detailed when it comes to results.
Unlike many folks who browse sites such as this, I'm a Christian. I try to do my best by people and, more importantly, by God, and that's how I want to live every day. To know how and when I would die would be like cheating: I could do whatever I want and live the worst, most sinful life, and then at the last minute try to change. Now, I'm pretty sure God wouldn't see that as sincere, but it would certainly increase the temptation. "Oh, I've still got X years/months/days/hours left, I can totally get away with this". Even if I still lived a pious life (or as pious as any could achieve) the temptation would always be there, poking at my head. So no, I think I quite like the surprise in store for me. Hope this didn't sound too preachy.
As much as I believe that it's everyone's choice in whether or not they believe, it's the derision some of the scientists give that doesn't sit well with me. I much more respect those that give a reason beyond just a chortle; at least they can see that there's another side to the discussion.
I'm a white, fiscally conservative Christian. I think that pretty firmly puts me squarely in the "Controversial to the Internet" category.
Well, if they didn't have free will they wouldn't have been able to eat the apple to begin with. In most Christian communities (at least that I've seen) the prevalent view is that God gave us free wills; it comes with having a soul. There's also the belief that the tree wasn't actually special, it was the act of disobedience that gave man knowledge of good and evil. Adam was ignorant to evil before hand, then disobeyed, and then realized he could continue to do that. Although I could see how @AlwaysOnTime came to his conclusion, as a Christian I think I have a slightly different perspective, haha
What happened?! Was it magic?
She mentioned 9-11. People get hurt, and they hurt others in return. It's a pretty nasty cycle. She was so blinded by her own angry that she didn't even really care whom she hurt, she just wanted to hurt SOMEONE back.
This seems to be a pretty interesting set-up you've got here. It seems you've taken Reddit and improved on the common complaints. I'm going to browse off and on for awhile and see if it sticks. Is this the kind of thing you want the word to spread about? If I like it I may let some of my friends know about hubski.
Shouldn't this be under an #atheism tag? I follow #science to learn about new discoveries and the like, not to get arguments for atheism.
I think it's just as likely that he's being sincere. I don't know what's in his head though, so I guess I can't really tell.
Huh. This is a very interesting thing for CNN. Not that they spun things to fit an agenda (It IS a news agency, after all. They all do that.), but that they spun it to be pro-Israel. It seems to me that CNN leans primarily left of center (Though not so far as MSNBC), but it seems that the majority of Democrats/Liberals are against Israel, at least from my experience. Anybody want to fill me in if I happen to be off on this?
It definitely is for Republicans, but I'm not sure about Dems. And CNN could have been pro-war (a term I take issue with, but it gets the job done) without being on Israel's side. I'm just interested in seeing where this leads, really.
People always take these kinds of atrocities and use them to push their agendas. I hope with this crime we can avoid that and just realize that this is an unstable individual that needs to learn better, while still keeping her away from people. It's sad and sickening on a number of levels.
Reddit's problem is the massive circle-jerk. Everyone there is aware that it's going on, and they just keep doing it. And then they circle-jerk about circle-jerking. Crazy.
I've been pondering this for awhile, and my only conclusion: Doctor Who. The 10th Doctor, specifically. A smart, attractive, adventurous fellow (dat Tennant) who flies around the universe being funny and saving lives? Sounds like anybody's best friend. Every time I see a description of him online he's described as "Geek-Chic". He wears suits, thick rimmed glasses at times, always a little out-there, and yet seems perfectly friendly and complex, as far as people go. With the huge popularity of Doctor Who, and America's love of emulating Britain (Curse you, Spice Girls!), we had this coming, and we have nobody to blame but ourselves. You either die a Hero, or you resurrect often enough to see yourself become the Villain.
I'M SO HELPFUL
I've been through one heck of a painful year. I'm looking forward to starting fresh and seeing some improvements in my life after a year that really didn't go according to plan.
I would definitely turn off AdBlocker for Hubski. I don't have a lot of money, so the least I can do is look at some ads.
I will never understand the appeal of either Owen Wilson or Matthew McConaughey. They're unfunny, they're not good actors, and they're the same person in EVERY. SINGLE. MOVIE. Not QUITE as bad, but Vince Vaughn isn't my favorite either. Not as bad as those two, because he can at least be funny.
Becoming the Archetype is a progressive death metal band. Night's Sorrow is off of their first album. Oh my.
How do you not decide to believe something? That's pretty much what the word means. I think the agnostic scientist put it best: Faith and religion do not contradict science. I don't think I understand some peoples absolute hate for any kind of religious belief system.
You're excused.
I'm pretty sure I know the one you're talking about, the one with all the monsters? (That narrows it down, go me -_-) And to be honest, I think it's pretty easy for an individual to define something they do as gay. To an outsider it may not be so simple, but the individual in question has a perspective the outsider doesn't, as well as direct, accurate knowledge as to his or her own motivation and thoughts. I think sometimes we as people complicate things needlessly in our efforts to find out how everything works.
