I have two:

1. I am not going to eat meat for a year

2. I am not going to have more than two drinks at a time. Essentially, zero hangovers for an entire year. (one exception for bachelor parties). I waste too much time/energy "recovering", it's stupid and I'm sick of it.

My girlfriend's a vegeterian, going for vegan. I'm (kind of) vegetarian. I stopped eating red meat for about a year now. Can't say I noticed any physiological difference, possibly because I generally still have some white meat on the side (chicken and fish). My cooking however has improved a thousand percent.

My lunches used to be meat, rice and beans and a salad. Now I generally eat a banana instead of the meat. I don't miss it at all.

It sounds like you have a healthy diet. I don't. I travel a lot and will eat unhealthy fast foods while on the road. I know I could have just given up "fast food" but I thought, why not try and give up meat too? My wife doesn't eat much meat so it won't be hard and I think she will appreciate it. I look forward to learning new styles of cooking too.

I doubt I'll miss it much either.

I gave up fast food way before I gave up meat. I also cut down hard on sodas, but still drink coffee everyday. I eat a lot of cookies too, so not really that healthy. Baby steps.

Back when I drank a lot of soda, I was fat. I used to drink it all day long when I worked in restaurants. Once I cut that out of my diet it was amazing how quickly I lost weight. Within a month I had dropped between 15-20 pounds. That stuff is pretty horrible for you. I think a lot of people make the mistake of thinking that because it's "diet", it's somehow good for you. I know people that drink gallons of diet soda every day.

Good luck on that first one. I know you can do it. Just think of it as learning how to cook an entirely new cuisine. Your versatility as a chef will totally improve!

For the second one. Having had a drink or two or twelve with you in the past, I know how you love the bottle. What I've been doing lately, I've found, is a good way to go for a boozer like myself .... WATER. I usually have to force it, but am always grateful. One glass per hour. The stuff's amazing.

Thanks s_s and Happy New Year. I do love me some drink and I have a hard time putting on the brakes. Water will help, I was thinking soda water. As for the vegetarianism, the aspect of learning how to cook new foods etc is part of what excites me.

Hope you have fun tonight pal.

Happy New Year buddy. And to all you 'skiers' out there!

#1 I agree with, and I wish you the best of luck. I don't think I have the fortitude to not eat meat at all, although I try to eat as little as possible.

#2 Sounds like one of those well intentioned plans that are doomed to failure from the start (or maybe you're hung over now, and you're thinking "I'll never drink again, I swear"). Not eating meat is a goal, and a good one. Limiting yourself to two drinks sounds like something from the Bible--that is, an unreasonable expectation that will only lead to self-loathing and guilt for not living up to perfection. (Tongue-in-cheek, BTW. Actually, I hope it works out. I've had the same thought in the past, but then I end up getting dragged to some lame party where I can't stand to not be drunk, and well, the circle of life carries on, so to speak.)

I enjoy a good drink, what I don't enjoy are hang overs. I'm not currently hung over but I was recently ( http://hubski.com/pub?id=12088 ) and it took a day of productivity away from me. Not cool.

I know what I'm capable of and if I resolve to do something, it will happen. I will do this and I think it will make me happier and more productive. I drink too much right now, it's indisputable by almost anyones standards.

And thank you for the well wishes. Happy New Year b_b

I hope at least you couple this resolution to drinking fine liquor then. At least if you're going to limit yourself to two drinks, you could make it a nice scotch or cognac! I find that the more expensive the liquor, the less I drink, and not because of price. Having something I actually want to savor makes me drink so much slower.

My personal poison of choice when it comes to cognacs: http://alcohol.wikia.com/wiki/Martell_Cordon_Bleu

Martell is good. It isn't the best, though. http://www.keltcognac.com/

I will have to be on the look out for this when I am out and about.

I think Steve Jobs may have enjoyed this, given how beautiful their bottle designs are!

Have you had this? I can't imagine how expensive it is, even for the VSOP. To date the priciest liquor I've ever bought was Remy XO, which ran me ~$170. Not something I would do often, but goddam is it good.

kleinbl00  ·  4714 days ago  ·  link  ·
I drink it when I can find it. It's tough to find at stores and the restaurants that have it typically want $9-12 for it.

It's $35 a bottle at BevMo.

I've a bottle of Hennessy XO. It's nice, but without personality. The Kelt is almost scotch-like in the amount of presence.

Never had the Martell. I'll check it out some time. I've always been a Remy Martin guy, because that's what my dad drinks.
lessismore  ·  4715 days ago  ·  link  ·
Remy Martin is good stuff. If you enjoy Remy, I am sure you will also enjoy Cordon Bleu. :)

It is funny that in a conversation about limiting drinking, the subject of what is best to drink sneaks its way in...Its going to be a long year thenewgreen :-)
thenewgreen  ·  4713 days ago  ·  link  ·
Hey now, I'm not "quitting", just "limiting"... I can have a couple glasses of Remy (note I never defined the glass size)
thenewgreen  ·  4715 days ago  ·  link  ·
I can absolutely adhere to this. I tend to savor the finer liquors too.
