Coming off two successful seasons to start MLR, I still consider them a good team. I've been a Seahawks and Mariners fan since I was little, and a Seawolves fan since MLR started. Even with this year's terrible record they are still the best Seattle team in my books :)

Congrats!

Can I encourage you to get vet insurance for a year or two? I never thought I would need it, but last week has proven that young dogs, especially those that are energetic might need it.

I wish you all the best with your new family member!

Thank you.

The crazy thing is that she didn't act hurt. Like she didn't even notice. Even when i picked her up from the emergency clinic to take her to the surgeon she seemed normal if a little less energetic. According to the surgeon, she'll be up and walking on 3 legs today. We'll see tonight how she really is.

Have you been able to get The Rugby Network to stream to a TV? I hate watching games on a laptop. Trying to cast from Chrome to my TV hasn't worked either.

My wife has agreed to make this her new alarm. She is terrible about getting up in the mornings.

We finally gave up on our old (gas) dryer, it was too expensive to move the gas lines and I'm not comfortable doing that myself. I did try but couldn't get the nuts to loosen without flexing the line. The dryer works fine, I replaced the belt a couple of times and the element once. It was purchased in 1986 according to the sticker on the back.

We remodelled our kitchen in 2008 and bought a beautiful set of appliances from Sears. The dish washer is having issues and I have had to repair the feed hose twice for leaks. Our refrigerator we bought new for $1600 is no longer made and the new compressor that it needs is $1000 without labor. We got a great deal on it, separate freezer / fridge setup like a commercial kitchen. Then we designed the kitchen around it. To get a new matching set is going to cost like $3000. It'll be cheaper to get a normal fridge and rework the cabinets.

posted to wrong week!

My friends and I go there a few times a year to mountain bike. This dude really put a strain on the locals with all of his malarkey. It seems it triggered some resentment from the local land owners that use to allow trails through their private property for a small fee and last year it all came to a big brewhaha. A number of the trails were closed and other locals that aren't part of the trail system stepped up their complaints about the number of tourists that converge on the town every year. I haven't been keeping up with all the details, but have hope that they will get things worked out this year or next. I can't wait to get back there and go camping and riding again.

Nice list of tasks. We still have a foot on snow on the ground, so I'm not feeling too ambitious yet. But I like your attitude!

I would love it if the party split. Reducing pressure of the far right would allow some movement of the Democrat party to the left. But I just don't believe it will happen. As much as team Trump wants to unburden themselves from the Republican party they can't afford to. They will lose too much power and influence over governance.

I like that board games are the essentials.

Congrats on the move!

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I mostly stick with the series at this point just because I want 'closure'. The first book drew me in. I was intrigued with how he killed off people that were important. F&B is kind of like reading Genesis at this point. It is just names and dates with little bits of story thrown in.

Just a quick follow-up on my vaccination expreince for those that are curious...

I got the shot at 4:00 on Wednesday. All was good until around 10:00. (Not sure if related or coincidental, but I was teasing my wife about something stupid and she punched me in the spot where I got the shot). Around 10:00 I started feeling feverish, which lasted until nearly 5:00 on Thursday. Fever never got very high, hung around 100, but it was enough to make me shaky and shivery. I slept as best as I could, waking up once or twice an hour then immediately falling back to sleep. Today I am just tired.

Your mileage may very.

This is awesome. How do people even come up with this stuff?

I showed my wife and she said it was nightmare material. So did my nieces that I shared it with. I just find it amusing. I must be broken.

For me it is making the bed every morning. There is nothing better than coming into my room at night, seeing the crisp made bed, and crawling under the covers. It truly is the simple things.

g5w  ·  1412 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Memo from the Joint Chiefs of Staff

One of the things that people keep pointing out, rightly so, is how the Trump base are dehumanizing the left/libs which leads to violence. With that in mind, I prefer to remember that the Trump supporters are people with their own issues and needs. Why are they willing to turn off their brains and blindly follow an authoritarian wanna be, what is driving their anger and resentment towards everyone else? Their needs are not being met by our government and the people that supposedly represent them. Until we address those issues, they will continue to lash out against anyone that naysays them. Employment and Education need to be brought up to snuff in the rural parts of our county. We need to move religion out of the sphere of control and get rational thought back into play.

The insurrectionists, and those that incite and enable them, need to be brought to justice. They should feel the full weight of their actions. I am NOT proposing leniency. We need to take appropriate action against fascism, totalitarianism, and prejudice. I don't believe that vilifying anyone that disagrees with me is going to be productive in the long term. It might make me feel better in the short term, it may even make it easier to act against them. In the long term, understanding why they are supporting Trump gives us an opportunity to address their needs and remove the catalyst for their support of him and others like him. Voters should vote based on political actions and their results, not political rhetoric, especially when the rhetoric devolves into populism like the conservatives have. The politicians and media that used racist and dehumanizing rhetoric to stir up the populace to take illegal and inappropriate actions should be culled from the political stage and put in jail. Those that latched on to the narrative and took those actions should be brought to justice.

I do however worry about the military taking a stance on any political event. They may be on my side this time, but next time they may not be. And using military force to push a political agenda will not end well for our democracy. I appreciate necroptosis clarification; I jumped too far down the rabbit hole with my internal thoughts and they spilled out into my post.

Any who, I don't often share my thoughts because I have difficulty articulating them. I appreciate you helping me to put them into words.

g5w  ·  1412 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Memo from the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Thank you. I appreciate the clarification.

g5w  ·  1412 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Memo from the Joint Chiefs of Staff

I find this unnerving. I would really prefer it if the military stayed out of any political process. Even just posting a memo like this in response to the attack on the Capitol building can be construed as a political action. It should have been a simple command down the chain that no military personnel should participate in insurrection and that prosecution would result if they did. A public announcement like this could be seen as an attack on the Trump base and start a downward spiral drawing the military more into the political process.

But that is my view.

Gah, I hate animals. So much effort, they're always underfoot; for what? Over the summer our oldest dog (Australian Shepard, Black Lab, mutt mix; yes we did genetic test, bc wife) stopped walking and pooping. He would start to whine and whimper so I would try to ease a towel under him, he would try to bite me for doing it, then use the towel like a sling to carry him outside so he could pee, but he wouldn't. Then I would carry him back in and then he would let loose. He couldn't get up on his feet, but he would army crawl around and get himself stuck behind things or in corners. Then he would whine and cry and bark to be saved. Rinse and repeat for several weeks. The vets said his liver and kidneys seemed to be working fine. They could only suggest doing super expensive x-rays and stuff to see if he had brain cancer. If he did, then best to put down. If he didn't, they couldn't explain why he was acting that way. That was not quality life for him. We decided to have him put down. It was an agonizing decision. Best guess was he was at least 9 when we got him, had him for 8 years, so he may have just been on his way out anyway, but still.

Now "our" cat is sick. Ten years ago my brother-in-law wanted to move to Boston, but his apartment didn't allow pets. He asked if we could keep his cat for a year or two and we stupidly agreed. Ten years we have had her. BIL moved back after a year, but got another apartment that didn't allow pets, then got married and his spouse hates cats. So, ten years we have had her. Two years ago she started getting weird rashes that would scab over and not go away. Vet thought she might be allergic to chicken. Seriously? Chicken? Do you know how hard it is to find cat food without any chicken product in it at all? So we paid through the nose for food, but it didn't change anything. Well, except that she would refuse to eat it after a while forcing us to hunt for another brand. After a year I gave up on that. In the meantime they suggested that she might have a form of eczema. So they put her on steroids. She has been on steroids for a year and half now, still no improvement. Then a few months ago they said she may have a thyroid issue. So now she is on thyroid meds. Still no improvement. She has always had super long nails, and we would get them trimmed every time we took her to see the vet. Last time was end of October. Last week we noticed that they were longer and fatter than usual. Brought her in this week to get them cut and for another check-up. Now they say she has breast cancer. C'mon! And they gave us a ration of crap for not bringing her in sooner since there was no skin improvement with the thyroid medication. Now they want to know if we are going to be committed enough to come in every two weeks for treatment (whatever that entails) or do we want to just put her down since we can't provide her with a good quality of life. For a cat that isn't even ours!

In the mean time, Christmas weekend, my wife found a puppy that she thought looked just like our other dog (American Bulldog, Boxer, Jindo mix; again genetic test because wife) and would be good to keep him company while we worked. And with me working from home (still) I would be able to potty train her (the new dog, not my wife). The more I look at her, the more I am convinced that she is a Jack Russell Terrier. A freaking small dog (my stated requirement from day one was that any dog we got had to be over 50lbs). And she has taken an interest in digging under our fence, so I have to stand there and watch her when I let the dogs out to play and potty. Grrr. NO. MORE. PETS!

Ages ago I found a stream from one of the webcams at University of Washington overlooking Red Square. I set up a script to grab a snapshot each morning and set it as my background. Sadly the image quality never improved as newer technology has come out so I stopped using it. I should look for some other cams to use as my background.

Another large Rail Trail is the East Coast Greenway. And an offshoot that still has a lot of work to be done is the Western New England Greenway. I have ridden portions of both and can say without a doubt that there is a lot of work to be done. But, I am glad that they are being created. I dream one day of hopping on my bike and riding down the road from my house and jumping on the WNEG and taking it south to the ECG, then riding south and connecting to the GART, riding west to the sunset. Hopefully it can come to fruition before I am too old to ride a bike.

My wife and I finally got to use our snow shoes that we bought six years ago. The winters have been real let downs with snows melting within a day or two, lots of rain, and a couple of dry years. While trekking around the hills of an old mine we more or less followed some ski tracks. I was surprised at how many steep climbs the person ascended. I would not have made that kind of effort, inching, literally inching, my way up a slope with my feet angled spread out to be able to keep the skis from overlapping each other. Power to anyone willing to do that. It was enough effort to climb in snowshoes.
