This is what is left from that conversation: http://hubski.com/pub?id=18666

Posted by me:

I'm disappointed. I don't feel that anything I wrote was a personal attack on you kleinbl00. I rarely pay attention to who posted the articles until after I've read them, and this example is no different. I'm usually a "if you don't have anything nice, don't say it at all," in this type of public forum. I suppose I should have stuck to my guns, but I just didn't like this article. I'm sorry you were offended by my reaction.

The facts remain: Hollywood is insulated. The average listing price in Hollywood was $698,000 as of this week. http://bit.ly/z678TX Compare that to the rest of the US: http://bit.ly/yE3AQ According to the US census, the average home price in the US is $272,900. If you could qualify for a home in Hollywood, you are not among the average - you just aren't.

Your response which you later deleted:

I give a shit for your disappointment. The only comment in this thread for three days was asking my opinion, because it's my industry. These are my friends, my coworkers, the people I talk to at craft service. It was wholly and completely a personal attack. The facts remain: Hollywood is insulated. That doesn't mean we aren't suffering. And yes, I know goddamn well what a house costs - what you're missing is that none of us own them. Yeah - compare that to the rest of the country. Go right ahead. I pay $2200 for a two bedroom 1100sqft apartment and I'm getting a bargain. For what a 3bd house in my neighborhood costs, I could buy a 52 acre ranch in Washington... or a 200 acre ranch in New Mexico. We call that "the cost of living." Your argument boils down to "you pay a high cost of living, therefore you are unworthy of sympathy." To which I say, in no uncertain terms, fuck off. EVERYTHING you wrote was a personal attack. "Oh, boo, hoo. People are losing their homes. Why don't they move to Yuma where things are really tough." Because my industry doesn't exist in Yuma, fuckhead.

It is egocentric to think that everyone should know who you are and know what boundaries not to cross. As popular as you think you are, you're just another username to a lot of people. I did follow you directly because I think you have an interesting insight on many topics. Still do. But I, nor most, have enough time to read every post you make and retain every minute detail of your life. I thought you worked as an Architect. I didn't know you lived in Hollywood. I didn't know you worked in the Entertainment Industry.

If you had left the posts as they were, undeleted, and weren't trying to deliberately distort what happened you might get more sympathy. You received an apology, you just refused to acknowledge it. The fact that this tantrum is dragging on for days speaks more to your character than anyone who responded to you.

I agree, though, I'm cautious about being too optimistic that she will run. It is infuriating that the our representatives in government don't try to provide the most basic duty--which is to represent their people, not businesses or special interest groups.

Here is an Interesting clip from John Oliver's show about ALEC.

I watched this about an hour after I got back from the Doctor's office. Still feeling the sting of a my new reality, this video short hit the spot. It made me laugh, it made me lament, it helped me feel a little of what I needed to externalize.

I am not sick. My body had taken a beating over the last year and today I found out that my genetics hates my guts even more than I thought. All I can do is shrug it off and keep moving I guess -- My wife is amazing BTW!

Thanks for caring, it is very kind of you.

fr33lunch  ·  4656 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Can we have a feature to ignore particular hubs?
I, too, was not a reddit user nor really any other social news site. I have been fairly active in subject-specific forums that interest me, woodworking, home theater, off-roading, etc. While neither of those topics are directly linked, the vBulletin software that they all use is the same. The format makes it easy to slip into the conversations without thinking to much about the process.

My company uses a credit card terminal to process all electronic types--like most retailers. However, because of our OS, we went with a different type of terminal than you might find at most retailers like Walmart or Home Depot. So the process of verifying the purchase amount, swiping, and authorizing payment are a bit different too. The terminals display step-by-step directives so that the customer can know how to proceed. Instead of actually reading the directions many turn into Neanderthals--mashing in the keypad, tugging on the power cord in search of a stylus, swiping their card over and over and over, all while muttering the phrase "why can't they make these damn things all the same?!" or the occasional "they're all a little different".

I think we all become Neanderthals when we are accustomed to something and then are introduced change. We like what we like--at least what we think we like. http://hubski.com/pub?id=18703

From a business standpoint, I know the perils of failing to make a product to fit the consumers needs. As a craftsman, I want to make something that I am proud of. I know that the right person will find my product as awesome as I do. However, I am not a craftsman by profession. Anything I make is part of a hobby. I don't rely on "customers" for payment. If I make something for someone it's usually as a gift. If they don't appreciate it they can go fuck themselves and I'll refrain from making anything else for them.

I'm somewhere between MK and scarp on this one. Pride for your heredity is foolish and arrogant, but being proud for having the courage to come out as gay is something else. At the very least that deserves pride in yourself.

For one of my friends, it was as simple as telling her mom--who was also gay. My uncle had a very difficult time with it. My uncle has lived with the same "roommate" for the last 40 years. He grew up in the Catholic church, during a time that such self-actualizations did not happen in public. To this day, no one speaks of it. That is a shame.

fr33lunch  ·  4745 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Fliers Still Must Turn Off Devices, but It's Not Clear Why
The issue is not so much during flight but before and after flight

An issue could occur with navigation while you're 40,000 feet in the air, but it's unlikely. Most newer airplanes use GPS these days. You have to think about how GPS works. It's one big speed=time/speed calculation for as many as seven satellites. The GPS receivers on the aircraft need ephemeris and course/acquisition data to track your flight path and could be corrupted by superfluous data from your cell phone. A Boeing 737 doesn't need 5 miles of lateral separation, but the FAA errs on the side of caution. The NATSB has helped to set standards to keep planes in the sky, and the FAA follows their recommendations for the most part. Although most aircraft have GPS, it is not required by the Federal Aviation Regulations. It would be extremely expensive to upgrade the entire air traffic system with new equipment and retrain all the controllers.

The line of sight (pulse) radar that is used by ATC is more susceptible to interference than GPS. The FAA requires the planes to transmit a specific code number when in class Bravo airspace--the same airspace you fly in while on a commercial flight. It is possible for someone's phone or device to transmit a beacon code that belongs to another plane. It may be unlikely, but ATC doesn't want to lose you in the sky.

The reality is though, you are allowed to use these phones during flight, just not landing, takeoff or taxi. Why? Most pilots don't do a whole lot to land the plane. What I mean is they don't do a lot to navigate their plane in a landing situation. Commercial aircraft have a precision landing system, either instrument, microwave, or precision approach radar. The Instrument Landing System, or ILS, is equipped with three different types of transmitters: the localizer, glide slope, and marker beacon. The localizer provides lateral course guidance information. It is one of the most precise and sensitive navigation aids available for instrument approaches. Unfortunately, its signal can be easily reflected off of buildings, land, power lines, etc thereby creating false courses.

In an IFR, or Instrument Flight rules situation like rain, snow, fog, etc...the pilot can't even see the runway until he's too close to adjust speed and altitude. The localizer helps the pilot bring you home safe. This is the chink in the armor.

fr33lunch  ·  4756 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Starbucks closes its washrooms
A topic that is close to my heart.

I currently run a large high-end retail store in an outdoor mall. Although plenty of other businesses around my store have restrooms, they do not allow their patrons to use their facilities. In fact, they take it a step further by suggesting that they come to my store. They even tell them what area in the store to find the restrooms, so that they can hurry in and return back to their stores...

The businessman in me knows that these customers walking through my door are added traffic and an opportunity to sell them something. The flip-side to this is the majority of the "customers" visiting my store just to use the restroom come from one of two stores: A pre-teen clothing store, whose customers are young girls who are dropped off by their parents to shop, and a big-chain bargain-reseller whose customers are not interested in much that is high-end--unless it's last season's.

My company does not have, nor will it allow me to implement, a patrons-only policy. At the same time, my company has devoted much time and money into tracking the conversion of our traffic to transactions. As a general manager, I am accountable for a metric requiring us to sell to a certain percentage of our traffic. It is, in part, how my performance as a manager is measured.

The plumbing in the surrounding area was installed many, many decades ago. As such, even the slightest plumbing issue results in about a $1000 plumbing bill every time I call. These funds come out of my operating-expenses budget and are a direct measure of another metric, profitability. So, say half a dozen 11-year-old girls are dropped off next door. One has to go to the bathroom. Well they're girls right? Then they ALL have to go. How many 11-year-olds do you think know better than to throw paper towels in the toilet? Not as many as you'd think.

So, should business have the right to not offer you a service? Damn right? Should basic sanitation and public health be maintained? Of course, but maybe they be provided by the mall, or strip mall that these businesses occupy.

As a side note, here in the golden state, I think any "restaurant" is required to offer restrooms to their patrons by law. Sorry Starbucks, you're screwed...

I'm not sure that he can claim "we posted the video in the interest of the public". What his site does is glorify actual violence, not some made up alternate reality. However, as repugnant and vile as I find the content of this site, I cannot see any criminal liability (atleast here in the U.S.)--civil liability may a different matter. Courts may award the family with a portion of the profits from this video.

Anything with Danny Carey on the set, here is why. His ability to separate time signatures with different hands and feet blow my fucking mind. Edit: Forgot this one which demos his use of polyrhythms. And this one that shows off his fascination with math. The time signatures of the chorus change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8. 987 is part of the fibonacci sequence.

fr33lunch  ·  4058 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What is your favorite quote? Why does it mean so much to you?

I'm sick of just liking people. I wish to God I could meet somebody I could respect.
― J.D. Salinger, Franny and Zooey

When I was in school, I saved every last dime I had to buy music. One day I was helping clean out my Uncle's garage and found a Metallica Single cassette tape (remember those). I played that tape nonstop for months until I had the $12 for the whole Kill 'Em All album. It wasn't long before I had every one of their albums. Soon later, I began collecting CD's of my other favorite bands. I joined up with Columbia House during one of their 12 cd's for $1 deal. I had two jobs in high school and spent every red cent on one of two things, drumsticks and CD's. These were the days before file sharing, streaming music, and easily obtained media. Without the purchasing power of Columbia House, I could never have afforded the music I was exposed to.

The impact that music had on my life in high school cannot be understated. Without it I would be a much different person. There are a lot of us that have this connection with music, so we are passionate about our favorite artsists and support them by going to shows and buying shirts & albums.

When mp3's and filesharing became all the rage, we all assumed that the price of digital music would be a fraction of the cost of an actual CD--but it isn't. The cost of entertainment is still inflated by the "distribution" costs created by the record labels. I see the solution as musicians retaining their production and distribution rights, cutting out the middle man. Utilizing these streaming services to promote select songs and offering complete albums or remixes through the artist's page only.

On the subject of Hubski and news aggregators, I've been thinking more about how Hubski seems to fit a collaborative filtering model more than an aggregation model As I see it, the "filtering" is done through recommendations to a larger extent than autonomous coding. Thoughts?

First off, this talk of meat is killing thenewgreen.

I've never had a pit bbq, but it's something I'm really interested in doing. My next endeavor will be to build an outdoor brick oven/fireplace.

Most of my bbq'ing experience is with indirect fire and lots of hickory, apple, or cherry wood smoke. My go to meats are also leg of lamb, ribs, tri-tip, salmon, any & all types of pork, and turkey breast (which makes great sandwiches). I'm a huge fan of rubs and homemade sauces. I cannot recommend the book Herbs and Spices: The Cook's Reference enough. It is less an recipe book and more an instructional on spices and what to do with them. I use it to make curries and spices mixtures a few times a month. While we're on the subject, good quality spices are paramount for any of my rubs. Penzeys has been a family tradition for prime, bulk and hard to find spices for a few decades now.

As much as it pains me to say this: This idea will never, ever be put into use. For many of the same reasons replacement fuels have failed since the 70's. I agree with your point that they don't discuss the energy or process used to materialize the hydrogen. The science behind the scenes is available for reading at Cella Energy's site.

People are going to latch onto this topic because it discusses the reduction of our dependance on imported oil. Unfortunately, the reason it resonates with people is that when they hear "foreign oil", they infer Middle-Eastern-Terror-Oil when they don't realize that we import the bulk of our oil from Canada.

fr33lunch  ·  4654 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: An awful moral dilemma.
I disagree. If this were a more primative time, and the fate of humanity was at stake, then maybe. But as far as I'm concerned, the survival of my child is more important to me. Further, I'm assuming the other village members are old enough to fend for themselves. A baby cannot. I would give my life for my child. I just would. Am I condemning the other villagers to death? No. They have a better chance than the baby does to fight or flee. My guess is that if such a situation came to pass, one of the villagers would try and make that decision for me.
fr33lunch  ·  4654 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: An awful moral dilemma.
How do you respond to such an absolute paradox? For me this goes one of two ways, neither of which result in me slaying my own child:

My existence on this planet is to protect my baby. The other villagers have the right to do what is best for them, but I protect my baby. If that means that I die trying to save her/him, then I've done everything in my power. If I can sacrifice myself by luring the soldiers away from the hiding villagers and I have an able bodied wife to raise that child, then I go that route. It is an awful dilemma indeed, but I could not ever choose my neighbor over my child.
