It's Hubski's second New Year, and I am happy to say that I don't have a fever this time.
It has been another good year.
The community has continued to grow, and so has the diversity of ideas and conversation. One thing that tells me that we are doing something right is that despite time and changes, many faces are still with us. I can still look forward to social critiques and perspectives from NotPhil, new music and strong opinions from cgod, and a sprinkling of art, ideas, and Blondie from alpha0.
insomniasexx has learned to code, and forwardslash created our first plugin. kleinbl00 and I still disagree on functionality, caio still supplies math and poetry, and thenewgreen started giving us #tngpodcast.
Of course, these are just a small slice of the personalities that have continued to make this an interesting place to be.
Just as important as those that remain are the good people that have come aboard this past year. cliffelam has been a refreshing counter to my political beliefs, thundara has brought some of the most varied and quality content, and theadvancedapes, lil, and JakobVirgil have reinforced my belief that people sharing their own writing on Hubski is a good thing.
I didn’t intend this to be a folksy shout-out, but that is how I feel about this past year. It has been a good time hanging out with these people in a small but growing space. It is possible that such a personal retrospective won’t make as much sense in future State of Hubski posts. However, I do hope that everyone’s individual experience can be as personal and rewarding if they seek it. In fact, that’s my goal.
Thanks to everyone that’s made this second year a good one.
In what felt like a Holiday surprise, syncretic (whether intentionally or not) opened the tap on a flow of new users this week. Welcome to all of you. This shake up has helped us to identify some things that we are doing well, and some things that we could do better.
It’s clear to me that everyone wants something just a little different from Hubski. I don’t expect that to change. However, when you take away the differences, I believe we have much in common when it comes to the type of experience we are looking for. Our goal for Hubski remains to be a place where people can have fruitful conversations over thought-provoking content.
As many of you know, thenewgreen has been an invaluable part of team Hubski for some time. Over this past year, b_b has also stepped into a planning and community outreach position. We have no payroll, but if we did, there are others that I feel like could be on it based on what they’ve given to Hubski. sounds_sound in particular has devoted a lot of time and consideration to our development.
In related news, we have another programmer coming on board! A proper announcement is forthcoming, but someone that has been close to Hubski from the beginning is going to join in the development team, which will double in size! There has been recent talk about an API, and because of these extra hands and expertise, one will be built this year.
The State of Hubski is good this New Years Eve of 2012. Thanks for being a part of that!
Happy New Year!
You'll have to fill me in on how this thing works. I wouldn't mind putting some effort into this.
I assure you, it was intentional ;) I think this place has great potential, and I have become very frustrated with the state of reddit as of late, in particular the group think / hivemind that seems to permeate every subreddit. I love the sense of community here, and while I don't think hubski can completely replace my reddit experience any time soon (the wealth of knowledge and diversity of the smaller subreddits is just too hard to resist), they will definitely be coexisting peacefully on my bookmarks bar for the foreseeable future. I look forward to seeing where hubski takes all of us into 2013 and beyond.
TBH I think if we could completely replace the Reddit experience for a lot of people, we would be doing the wrong thing. I see more divergence rather than convergence in the future.I love the sense of community here, and while I don't think hubski can completely replace my reddit experience any time soon (the wealth of knowledge and diversity of the smaller subreddits is just too hard to resist), they will definitely be coexisting peacefully on my bookmarks bar for the foreseeable future.
A lot of people also have a different Reddit experience too. I personally am an absolute content consumer. I don't create content or post it, I just read it, and by read it, I mean I read _everything_. For people like me, who have a Reddit experience of reading interesting posts in r/AskHistorians r/minimalism and a myriad of other small, but high quality subreddits but without any posts of my own, Hubski is currently a supplement to that high quality content. Hubski will replace Reddit for me as soon as high quality posts from specialists or dedicated groups will migrate here. I am really looking forward to that time period, as I absolutely love and crave interesting content, and Hubski has a very efficient interface for me to do that, and I am sure it will improve.
Maybe you should have a "contributions" page where you can post simple tasks others can do for you. Say you want to change a minor functionality, but don't have the time for it, have some person pick up that project, and then return that to you. It would probably hard without open-sourcing the project though, and could be too much of a pain to set up.
There's a good chance that we might open source soon. I always intended to at some point, however there are some other considerations that might make it happen sooner than later. IMO there's a lot of energy and creativity that could be harnessed for the betterment of Hubski, and I'd like to give an outlet for that. The API is an obvious step in that direction. There's a few moving parts here, and I hope to be able to have some specifics for everyone very soon.
Ive been a redditor for quite a while now, and a hubskier (is that even a word?) for about a week, and there is one thing that is strikingly similar to our opinion and my life ; Reddit is like a club, to which you go out sometimes and act crazy, while Hubski is like your local bar with friends. How much I enjoy a club, ill always return to my friends at the local bar :) So here's to you hubski, have a great 2013!
+! Thanks for spreading the word syncretic. I have been enjoying the conversations I have been having with a wide variety of hubskiers these past few days. I have met some really great artists, scientists and musicians. I hope you have a great 2013.
I don't want this to turn into a Redditors-anonymous thread, but I'm here because of you, too. I had gotten so tired of "OP is a fag" in every thread outside of the niche communities I'm a part of. I had been looking for an alternative outside of reddit. Your post was perfectly timed. For that, I thank you.
As someone who just joined Hubski within the past week, I feel almost privileged to have stumbled across such a great community. There's a level of quality and community here that I have yet to find anywhere else on the net, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the new year brings as we continue to grow. So thanks to everyone for being unbelievably welcoming to myself and the others who just joined, and a Happy New Year to all!
Hosting a party at my house. As I read this, tucked away in a corner where no one else's is, I read "the state of Hubski" and couldn't be more excited for the future. I'm a bit drunk, and I'm an emotional drunk (beats an angry one, right?) but I can safely say "I love Hubski". Happy new year all! Those of you that I've conversed with and befriended in 2012, I am better for it, thank you so much! Be safe and have fun tonight! 2013!!! edit: I take no responsibility for you getting too drunk in 20012.
And I will buy you a some good ol' Canadian poutine.
I bet you guys have some amazing poutine over in the east. The only poutine I've had over here was bought from New York Fries.
Blue Jays vs Tigers April 9, 10, 11 in Detroit
Blue Jays vs. Tigers July 1, 2, 3, 4 in Toronto
-- but theadvancedapes might not be a fan. Personally, I'd go to Detroit for the rock and roll. Just think of the science I could learn on the drive down!
If I'm in Toronto, I will buy the tickets for any Hubskiers willing to get up from Detroit. Guest room could handle two adults and one baby, hint, hint thenewgreen --
I love the idea of a Hubski outing to the ballpark. Let me see what I can do about getting North for either of those dates.
I love baseball. It is my favourite sport. I'd be down for a Toronto meet up, and I'd do what I could to make a Detroit meet up.
Haha that's embarrassing. Most likely you are the only one who noticed.
Happy New Year!!!! So glad to be a part of this community. I know I'm new, but I have a feeling I'm in it for the long haul. What wonderful content and conversations; there is a gentle ebb and flow that I'm enjoying. Thanks to everyone for making me feel welcome and wanted here. I am grateful. Love to all!
I couldn't agree more with everyone else. It's been a short few days but I can sense the community here and it's such a great place. I don't feel like my only goal is to garner attention with random posts. This feels like a place I can read stories, have good convos, and enjoy company. Hope everyone has fun tonight. 32 minutes until the New Year for me!
I discovered Hubski randomly in May, and I have started to love it more and more every month. Fantastic community. Actually, it is the first time I have ever formed any type of bond of the internet with people I haven't met in physical reality. Except for that one time I got drunk and hooked up with a few girls on Christian Mingle.
I'm glad to be a part of it and excited for what's in store for the future of something great. Happy New Year, everyone!
I love you Hubski. From the bottom of my hungover, covered in goldfish crumbs heart.
Happy new years everyone! I haven´t been on this site for long, but the little time I have I´ve loved it. This community seems strong and if done right it can remain strong. Happy wishes all the way from Mexico!!
As someone who created an account not two minutes ago I just want to say thanks for making a community where the free exchange ideas still exists.
As a new member of the Hubski community, it is great to see a place that directly caters to the user experience and fresh thought provoking content. I look forward spending more time here, and would like to thank everyone that works hard to make Hubski what it is.
