Friends, lurkers, and newcomers, lend me your eyes!
This is a place for fresh faces to stop by, interact, or merely read - though saying hello is highly encouraged! In line with my recent comments, I've seen fewer new names crop up despite the wave from the last Reddit emigration (CEO of Reddit manipulating comments, IIRC). That said, I'd like to think the promotion system is a limiting factor in exploring the site's features. Are you still confused with any form of the system or culture?
I know I, for one, posted more than commented in order to get my questions out there - hell that's the whole point of the #newtohubski tag (esp. in conjunction with #askhubski). Perhaps allowing those two to be fair game?
Other examples:
For the familiar faces, what are your thoughts on the matter now? Here's a chance to reflect on how the 'promotion' system has gone thus far and connect with those directly affected. If you're part of the old guard that can't post, then this is the place for you as well.
It's a double-edged sword. The reduction in spam posts has been fantastic. I'll say that much. It would be wonderful if quality new users could post immediately. However, if the expectation weren't there, then I don't think it would be much of an issue. It doesn't take much quality interaction to result in someone promoting you.
I’m a bit confused by how the new system with promotion affects submission ability. For instance, I’ve had my account for several years, and wanted to share something (my first post!) but can’t find a way to do so. I suppose this means I haven’t been promoted yet. I’ve been on the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington state for the last few weeks, and I’d like to make a trip report for Hubski. Or am I just missing the submit link somewhere?
I haven't been on Hubski in a long time, just popped in and read this. Disappointed that someone wants to make a trip report but isn't allowed to. I hit the promote button on your comment (whatever that means) and hope that helps somehow.
You should add violin to any of these songs: #hubskioriginalmusicclub Or most definitely these songs:
Awesome. I would love to read your report. The PCT is a dream of mine.
Hey. Damn right you haven't. So, check out global feed. See any spam? The downside: If a user hasn't commented to the point of getting a hub wheel, or being promoted by an active user, they don't get to make a post. There's probably a happier medium in there.
There's no spam on global. Great! I'm just concerned about a member of over 2 years not being able to post. There is clearly room for improvement. I'm on break for the next week so I decided to hop on here and there. I've got a trip report or two as well that I may put together soon.
Yep, we completely agree on that. Any thoughts on how to improve this? The original workaround was well, people will just promote users! The more trip reports the better! There's no spam on global. Great! I'm just concerned about a member of over 2 years not being able to post. There is clearly room for improvement.
It would be pretty degrading to tell newcomers or current members that they have to comment on another's post for a promotion, but that's probably what I would have done if I was in the newcomer's situation. In the case of a long-time user, I think the muting thing needs to have a time limit.
I'm extremely new here- Less than five minutes as of this writing. I found Hubski through a post complaining about the Eternity and Century Club reddit communities, and I love the clean look and small community (Large communities completely terrify me, not gonna lie), though I took the tour and it was very... preliminary, I guess? It scratched the surface, not much more, so I'm really curious about how Hubski actually works.
Thanks for the warm welcome, I really appreciate it. Hubski already seems like a place I'd fit in- A cleaner version of Reddit's "style" (though a dark theme would be great) paired with a smaller community/more leisurely environment and the ability to revive old posts. Now all I gotta do is earn that promotion so I can become a more active part of the community!
Howdy! There are several themes to choose from. Click on your username, then find the Settings link on the left column, and on the Settings page, the right column is called "Aesthetics". This lets you tune your hubsperience. I just switched to the Dark theme for the first time, and am going to try it out for a bit.
Hey hubskers (is there a preferred nomenclature?). Just discovered this site via a hackernews thread about reddit's new round of funding. I just wanted to tell you guys that I love the form and function of this website, it seems like the perfect mix between social network and content aggregator. I also love the feeling of smaller internet communities, so I'm going to take the leap and jump right in.
First off, welcome! As far as I've seen, anything goes. Having the smaller community is a big plus in my book, so you make sense to me. Wednesday you'll see a thread called 'Pubski' where people stop in and talk about whatever - like a Pub (hence pubski). That's usually what I'd point to in order to discover a variety of personalities and people here. By virtue of having a smaller community, you'll find the site runs at a slower pace. That said, if you find some post made a while back that interests you or have commentary for, feel free to leave comment on it if you feel inclined to.Hey hubskers (is there a preferred nomenclature?).
hi everyone. saw this site in an emigration and browse it regularly, lurking hard. I am slow as hell at typing. i know how that sounds, I really just didn't adequately practice typing while we were taught in school, never getting the muscle memory for typing regularly. Same deal with the oboe, and guitar hero. Sometimes im too afraid of failure to teach myself things.
If you want to take it slow with typing, I highly recommend checking out [https://www.keybr.com/](Keybr) if you want to develop muscle memory. It adapts its lessons depending on what mistakes you make, and starts off with a few keys at a time. It's funny you mention guitar hero, because I've always tried to be "guitar hero good" at most things- cooking, talking at parties, flying a kite, actual guitar hero, whatever. I don't know where I picked the phrase up, but it just means that you're good enough to get through stuff on normal mode. I haven't played guitar hero in awhile though. Do they still make games for that?
From a mechanical standpoint, +promote is working: - Multiple people are promoting new users - Global is free of spam - Spam has shifted to Chatter, where it is quickly stamped out well done mk! Which looks to be the source of friction. We do have a culture, and it is different from reddit. The different scales of the user bases pretty much force that. Getting everyone to post to #newtohubski as their first post would be neat. Might set the tone a bit for future interactions. Also a pipe dream without forcing people to do it.Are you still confused with any form of the system
or culture?
hell that's the whole point of the #newtohubski tag
I'm cool with forcing people to do it. I'm on a torrent site that, when you don't log in for too long, requires you to post a video of yourself doing the dougie. Holding people to one new tag for one new post isn't against the Geneva Convention. I think I've promoted 2-3 people.
People do far better at a task when they understand why they're doing it. That's the reason I won't vote for forcing people to post to #newtohubski. I would, however, vote for making primer the next step after finishing registration and including a paragraph or two about what to do next. Hubski isn't exactly common-sense for the tone set by an average Internet discussion. A bit of guidance can go a long way towards inclusion. Speaking of the primer: mk, the primer text runs out unexpectedly at this line: Doesn't seem planned. You can view all posts using the global feed. Exceptional content can be found under
"Let's discuss!" Eight shares, one comment, hahaha. I haven't promoted anyone yet, but I think mk's right in that it probably wouldn't take much for me to do so. Even just a friendly comment from a new user - enough to know they're not a spam bot, really - would get a promotion from me. I can't remember what the limits are, though - how many people can you promote, again? Also, unless someone actually says they're knew, it's unlikely one would even think to promote them. Would it be possible/wise for new users to have some sort of flair perhaps invisible to themselves? I was going to say a different colour username but that would conflict with the follow dynamic. Anyway, it's probably unnecessary. Anyway, global was a nightmare before the new system.
I agree with everything written in the '#spam' post, though I'd like to revisit the last line here since it's more to the point of this discussion. The intent of this discussion (at least, how I'd like to view it) boils down to the retention rate of new users post-promotion implementation. Outstanding community members of late, to me have arisen from their own posts, sometimes taking 5 posts or more until interest (shares) come. That is, once they've gotten comfortable with the community. I would be surprised if that was after they've completed a full spoke.I think promotion should he used to include people who have shown they are outstanding community members. Regular old community members can get in the door with a minimal amount of conversational engagement.
I'm a bit confused with this idea. Would it not make more sense to merely disable the promotion option for those accounts that were created before the date of implementation? That way if the account has option to promote, they are strictly (relatively) new.
Asphalt and chewing gum is a small price to pay for the brighter alternatives.
That alongside the font used for d20 is how I imagined it. Not sure if you use dark by default, yet the fonts, spacings and palettes as you know differ. On the side of kb, pretty sure he thinks dark mode is dirty enough, if ya smell what I'm farting.
That's essentially my rule as thumb, alongside some personal grammar peeves. This was thrown around, but I've promoted a couple in one day. https://hubski.com/pub/218639#h386361 Just scroll through there from time to time since that's seemingly the only place for reliable new traffic. Looking into their profile is how I've gone so far. Also, there are people who have been on Hubski more than a year, yet haven't reached a full spoke yet - meaning they can't post. Sometimes it's worth looking. Even just a friendly comment from a new user - enough to know they're not a spam bot, really - would get a promotion from me. I can't remember what the limits are, though - how many people can you promote, again?
mk: I have no idea where the extra height comes from. Looked through the page with Google Developer thing: none of the elements increase height but <body> itself, for no apparent reason. Might be due to the <iframe>, but that would be your guess. Also, I'm stealing the tip of increasing font weight on lower-width devices.
I joined a few months ago but haven't posted recently due to real life. I like the site design and the people seem nice. Something that really interests me is the design of online communities and the interaction between people, particularly when voting systems are involved. One thing that comes to mind is that users are quite dispersed at the moment. If someone new comes along it can look sort of empty. reddit had the same problem early on and I think they solved it by keeping all discussion in one place for a while until more users turned up. Obviously hubski has a different design, maybe pin (right word?) a few more discussions to help concentrate the community?
Hubski isn't really all that empty, it just goes at a much more leisurely pace. Part of the reason is that we don't have as many users, yes, but also part of that is because our users are spread all over the world. We have regular posters from Australia/New Zealand, Russia, France, those Scandanavian countries I can never keep straight (sorry veen and Devac!), and the U.S. of course has four time zones and everyone keeps different professional hours. When you've been here for a minute or two, you quickly get used to the idea of posting a comment and then checking back half a day later to see if you got a response. As for concentrating the community, activity here is so light, you can see everything going on in Global and Chatter in a single day without much effort. One of the things I do tend to recommend people though, cause I see that it helps, is to keep tags a bit on the vague side. For example, if I'm talking about a race, I'll use #cars instead of #f1 or #dragracing because the likely hood of people following the more specific tags is pretty low. The post is gonna be visible in Global anyway, because there's not much it's competing at, but this way it's easier for people to look back and find old posts under certain subjects. Edit: Also, thread necromancy here is both allowed and even somewhat encouraged. So don't be afraid to comment on a thread that's 2 months or even 2 years old.
Honestly? I don't really have a problem with that. Anyone who knows anything knows Canada is much less a country and much more a culture actively exploring one major thought experiment. Involving citizens from a real country might actually do some good. Edit: All joking aside, Canada is actually an awesome country and I'm glad they're our neighbors. Ditto for Mexico.
I have no idea how tags are supposed to work. Hi, my name is goobster, and I have no idea how to use tags effectively. everyone: "Hi goobster." So I find an article or have an epiphany, and decide to show it to Hubski. I click the POST button in the top menu, come up with a pithy title, paste the URL in, write some content intended to draw people into conversation... ... and am presented with two little tiny fields that say "tags". Do I need to fill these out? Do I need to fill both out? Or only one? Do I need to add the hashtag before the characters, or will it automatically put in the hashtag for me? What hashtags are available? Which hashtags are currently in use, and are appropriate to this article? Where can I find a list of hashtags? Is this automated in some way? Does it add hashtags like #science if I post an article from Scientific American? Or #politics if the post contains Trump? That's why all my posts have zero tags, or funny ones. I have no idea how/why to use this feature. (goobster sits down slowly in his chair. His eyes are downcast, shoulders hunched, hands folded in his lap. The room is quiet as everyone processes exactly what am imbecile goobster is, and rethinks the invitation they sent him to their batmitzvah. Someone quietly coughs. Traffic can be heard driving by outside in the light rain...)
Yeah, I could go back and edit, I guess. But there still is no list of available tags, or appropriate ones, or whatever. I'm sure if I was committed to the platform fully, I would instinctively remember whether it is #SillySeason or #sillyseason, or I might actually remember the BETTER version of that tag that KB came up with... but I will never find that post again, just to discover the tag he used, so I can edit my post with an appropriate tag... that has some unknown value or reason for existing...
Which is why I often use the most simple, straightforward, topic appropriate tag. Community tags on the other hand, I'll get a bit more creative if the first two tag slots are already well filled. If not, then I'll tag it with once again, a simple, straightforward, topic appropriate tag.
i just sign up for this site (or whatever), i just searching how to post in google and get direct to this page. feel dissapointed. actually i sign up in this site for find alternative of quora, i want post to get advice, in quora before you can post a question with some of explanation, but not anymore. bcz of that i try to find alternative of quora. and i get dissapointed for this rule. maybe i will goto reddit instead. sorry for my bad english.
I am also new here and unable to post anything here. don't find any page to for submitting a post about how to world cup live stream free anywhere in the world without cable for my friends with FastestVPN. so I can mention here for my friends and share this post. Blog.fastestvpn.com
Why I can't make any discussion or post on hubski?
I'm trying to write a review comparing social networks but under "post types" for hubski I'm going to have to put NONE because I can't post (or even view what the post page looks like to see what options are available) :(
Thanks! I'm making a chart comparing all the "social networks". I'll link it here when I'm done.
Well, i am one day old here. I loved the website stands for, sharing ideas without minding how long the text is, my cup of tea, and i did like the community, i checked the topics open and was enough to appriciate the community. I also have a lot to share. I founded a movement and i really want to discuss it here. So if someone would promote me, i wouldnt dissapoint zir. If not, i thing i ll get my full wheel eventually. I have 2 dots now so, not bad, ha?
How do I follow a tag? I looked at the FAQ but I'm not seeing anything on any part of this page for me to follow.
Ok cool I found the tag and followed it. When I go to my feed now, though, I'm still getting a bunch of posts from tags I'm not following. Is there somewhere I can go where I can only see the stuff that I'm interested in?
Well, you know what they say about being the change you want to see. I'll try posting some #canada and #cdnpoli stuff.
That's interesting. forwardslash, mk, rob05c. Usually, you'll see "#canada# has been used as a tag" under the search bar if any results showed up. As seen here. You can always click the posts your search finds, then you'll be able to navigate to the tag themselves from there. Here's the link to the tag itself. You'll see the "follow #canada" there.
