I joined a few months ago but haven't posted recently due to real life. I like the site design and the people seem nice. Something that really interests me is the design of online communities and the interaction between people, particularly when voting systems are involved. One thing that comes to mind is that users are quite dispersed at the moment. If someone new comes along it can look sort of empty. reddit had the same problem early on and I think they solved it by keeping all discussion in one place for a while until more users turned up. Obviously hubski has a different design, maybe pin (right word?) a few more discussions to help concentrate the community?
This is awesome. I'm about halfway through it and I'm going to implement some of this on my next hobby project. Like you say 'make code beautiful' is all well and good but specific stuff is better.
I would argue that these media outlets are more concerned with their viewing numbers rather than generating fear deliberately. It just so happens that fear/terror gets a lot of attention which means more money. So these outlets have a incentive to replay the horror, fear as a consequence rather than a goal. Good article though.
Technology has thrown up lots of new social challenges. But the scale of FB is just so huge that I don't think that effective moderation is possible as currently designed. With 1.9 billion monthly active users trying to control their interactions is like being the government of the biggest country on Earth.
The specification of the boat looks well thought out, not just some hail mary jury rig. I've done offshore sailing before but nothing like an Atlantic crossing. It's a real experience being out of sight of land with no reference points and only the sound of the sea. On your own in a boat that small with what sounds like very uncomfortable sleeping arrangements will be an epic test. Good luck to him.
This seems really neat. A way to avoid having to deal with large financial institutions while keeping things frictionless. At the moment ShapeShift holds the opposite position of the contract. I assume that will change in the future?
