I forget where I read it, but I ran across a comment the other day that one of the issues with suburbia is that there is no center, no place for people to congregate.Farmers’ markets are thriving, more than five thousand strong, and there is a lot more going on in them than the exchange of money for food. Someone is collecting signatures on a petition. Someone else is playing music. Children are everywhere, sampling fresh produce, talking to farmers. Friends and acquaintances stop to chat. One sociologist calculated that people have ten times as many conversations at the farmers’ market than they do in the supermarket.
- one of the issues with suburbia is that there is no center, no place for people to congregate.
I'm going to write a song about this.
jk. I'm not a Gen Y'er (I don't think) but on behalf of any generation, thanks for your work. Everyone wins when a city is made safer and cleaner.
I want to have my cake and eat it too. I want to live in a smaller city, something like Portland OR or Austin or Raleigh/Durham so I can have an urban center but easily get out in to recreation.
