User humanodon doesn’t trust white people. Hubski clearly approves. That day I also learned that if I’m not attracted to people of a different race than mine, I’m literally worse than Hitler.
Do I dare point out the obvious? I do. Notice the angry reaction that my simple statement provokes. I’m arguing semantics and projecting. This is when people started libelling me and accusing me of being racist, even though I’m the only one here who speaks out against racism when he sees it.
This guy tries to redefine racism so he can openly insult white people (but remember, I’m the one who’s arguing semantics).
User lil rushes to justify humanodon's racist statement.
Quatrarius too, while admitting that humanodon's comment was racist, doesn’t find anything wrong with it. You see, it’s not racism if it’s an admission, and white people probably deserve it anyway. Again Hubski shows its approval.
humanodon admits that he has prejudices, but it’s okay because according to him everyone has them; he then tries to shift the blame on others, using the same projection argument seen above.
User _refugee_ thinks there’s nothing wrong with bigotry and racism, so long as it’s directed towards whites. Whites are evil and deserve all our hate! We’re not racist!
humanodon thinks that prejudice is not inherently bad, and good people shouldn’t worry about getting rid of their own bigotry nor recognise it in others. He even has white friends!
So we’ve seen that some of Hubski’s most popular users are openly racist and not ashamed of it, while those who speak out against racism are the ones who end up getting libelled by creeps like ThatFanficGuy. It’s obvious what this says about Hubski as a community.
This has been a public service announcement brought to you by one of the few people on Hubski who gives a damn about truth.
Yes there is a fair bit of racism on this site, and yes of course it's shitty when people try and pass it off as the right thing to do. However, this was not the best way to go about making your point. First of all it wasn't a particularly good example. There's only one user in your screencaps who I'd say is blatantly displaying racism, as far as I can tell, and although I might disagree with some of the other people, at least they're discussing the matter and making points which I might be able to then challenge. All you can do when confronted with these people is to make your point clearly and concisely. Once you've made your points it's time to leave. When people are shouting insults at me on the street, I don't stick around and let them use me as entertainment. I might challenge them briefly, but then I leave. It's the same attitude I try to have here on Hubski. You will never change any of their minds. You probably will never change anybody's mind when it comes to something serious, such as racism, sexism, etc. All you can do is give them enough to think about and hopefully they will change their own minds. Pointing your finger and calling names out of the blue just reflects badly on you.
The context in which a particular word is used is important, and the meaning that a word carries in one usage may not be the same as in another usage. If I as a white person am racist towards someone of another race, it calls to mind the history of relations between those two races. In many cases, relations between the "white race" and pretty much any other race have been negative and one-sided. Thus it is reasonable to assume that if I as a white person am racist, I probably harbor some sort of negative and perhaps one-sided (read: oppressive) feelings or intents towards someone else. On the other hand, if a person of another race is racist towards a white person the feelings, thoughts, intents, etc towards that white person (or people) are more likely based on a history of mistreatment or fear. I'm not saying that those any type of racism is a good or positive thing. But to draw such as false equivalency between two fundamentally different things which share a name is incorrect, and given your history around here suggests that you are doing it intentionally so as to cause trouble.
Here's what I see: lots of people are predjudice. People make judgments about others all the time. Sometimes those judgments are harmful or hurtful towards others, sometimes those judgments are smart and helpful to the person who makes them. Some judgments are frowned upon by the community at large, some judgments are applauded and embraced by society as "socially-acceptable." There is no universally hard and fast rule about what judgments fall into which of those categories. My understanding of racism is that it's a specific subset of predjudices which are (1) made on the basis of race, (2) harmful towards those to which the judgment is made, and (3) embraced as "socially-acceptable" or reinforced by the culture at large. As a gay man, is it racist or just prejudice for me to be nervous about being openly gay in front of black people or white people? I don't know, I try to pre-judge people as little as possible, but I'm also cautious about who I trust, because I think that's just being smart in a world full of angry hateful people.
