Here's what I see: lots of people are predjudice. People make judgments about others all the time. Sometimes those judgments are harmful or hurtful towards others, sometimes those judgments are smart and helpful to the person who makes them. Some judgments are frowned upon by the community at large, some judgments are applauded and embraced by society as "socially-acceptable." There is no universally hard and fast rule about what judgments fall into which of those categories.

My understanding of racism is that it's a specific subset of predjudices which are (1) made on the basis of race, (2) harmful towards those to which the judgment is made, and (3) embraced as "socially-acceptable" or reinforced by the culture at large.

As a gay man, is it racist or just prejudice for me to be nervous about being openly gay in front of black people or white people? I don't know, I try to pre-judge people as little as possible, but I'm also cautious about who I trust, because I think that's just being smart in a world full of angry hateful people.
