WOAH I SAW THIS DUDE AT A CONCERT ON TUESDAY! It was andrew bird, he had a regular (albeit gigantic) camera and he was standing in the press/photography section right in front of the stage. Unmistakable man, I asked about his camera before the show. he had an accent I thought was south african or australian or something.
I'm kinda still skeptical but there is no way this isn't him.
Started off with a guy named Luke Temple on a classical guitar and vocals, had a drummer alongside. So good, similar to Bird but much simpler in rhythm, with slightly more traceable train of thought in slightly more discernible lyrics. However, he finished his set with a song about what we (myself and those around me) made out to be about his mother's suicide. I don't think the crowd was paying attention cause they started cheering and clapping.. didn't seem to be Temple's intent. Yikes. Bird was good. just good. Started off awesome with two beautiful, sublime solo pieces. Then the band came and it was to-the-core typical country music. I hadn't expected that. The girl he was with was annoying as all hell, had that cowgirl southern pride legs-weirdly-spread-apart-in-a-dress with the guitar sort of vibe. The band was very offputting, really. Then, luckily, their encores sorta returned to his old style from Apocrypha and so on. Idk. It was a free show too and outdoors, the only main reason I can say I loved the show was because of the atmosphere and the venue. Seeing Bonobo there this Sunday, free again, going to be stellar. How did you like him when you saw him?
My favorite version of seeing Andrew was when he played with just a percussionist named Martin Dosh that was amazing. Andrew is more than capable of making enough sound on his own, but I'm sure he enjoys having more musicians to play with live. The guys a phenomenal performer imo.The girl he was with was annoying as all hell, had that cowgirl southern pride legs-weirdly-spread-apart-in-a-dress with the guitar sort of vibe. -Wow, that's amazing because my wife and I had the same feeling. She sounded great, but she was really distracting on stage. She seemed to constantly be looking around at the other bandmates for recognition etc. She seemed very insecure up there, which was off-putting, even if I did feel for her, I didn't come to the show to see that. I did enjoy the guitarist that was on the slide, he was a great player imo. I've seen Andrew with his Bowl of fire back in the day, with several iterations of a band over the years and while I really enjoyed the most recent show it was easily my least favorite lineup accompanying him.
No doubt he's phenomenal. And I totally forgot about sliding guitar guy, looked like Robin Williams a little bit. Bassist was also really into it and knew what he was doing, which was pleasant. What can I say, not every concert is going to be 1,000 out of 10 even if the performer is great. Make the best of it anyway. The pizza was delicious.
I'm having a difficult time understanding how he could achieve the footage in the "Stainless" video ~1/3 of the way through this article without moving the perspective of the camera at a very high speed. Originally, I mused that he combines a considerable amount of optical zoom with a small amount of panning/scanning, from right to left (for this particular piece). But that does not yield the variance in perspective seen in the video! He must have relied on composite footage and editing. Regardless, he clearly utilizes a very high sampling frame-rate, and the whole project is quite intriguing.
