Author needs some help with his commas in the title but that's okay.
What do you think about the "Redskins" name, Hubski?
I recently read a quote from a Native American and I cannot find it unfortunately, but the jest of it was that when you see a black person you also see the lynching, the rape, the slavery etc that was inflicted upon them. When you see a jewish person, you see the holocaust, the banishment and centuries of torment. When you see a Native American, you see charicatures: Chiefs, Redskins, drunks etc. Their history was robbed from them and you don't see the trail of tears, the children dying in their parents arms, the disease and brutality (like scalping) that was wrought upon them. So yeah, I agree with that and think the name is disgusting.
Everyone is able to be offended by something, this particular person just chose this particular idea to be offended about. There is so much more than the forced relocation of a few Native tribes. If we're going to celebrate Native American History, lets celebrate their actual history, not the Trail of Tears experienced by a few tribes.
Except nowhere in the proclamation is the word "redskins" used. I'm not trying to defend the name ( I couldn't care less), but people are literally making shit up to justify it being a slur. http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2012/11/13/redskins-not-so-black-and-white
Oh, god, that article's a headache to read. At the bottom of this one in Esquire there's a rebuttal about people who dispute the term's etymology - not sure if you saw it - here So while the term's not used in the Phips proclamation it is historically used within that context elsewhere; doesn't seem like people are making that shit up.
I think it's offensive, but more importantly, many people who the slur is actually directed at find it offensive and I think it should be changed.
Here I was thinking "redskin" was just a term for "native american warrior" or something of that sort. Not ... that... I still don't care much for going around saying people should change their team names. Or forcing them to do so through the government. But I wouldn't be too keen on wearing a redskins shirt from now on.
