This will definitely go through some revisions. I have a second part part in my head and hopefully the entire thing will have bass and drums behind it, with some more vocals and all electric instead of acoustic.
But this is the first original, non-electronic piece of music I've shared on Hubski. Talked to humanodon at the meetup about my hesitancy to ever record and share this stuff but here it is. Feedback is welcome.
Thanks, and welcome to Hubski! The reason the lyrics are hard to hear is recording limitations...eventually that will be fixed (see my response to thenewgreen for more on that). This was literally a bedroom recording. I'm glad you enjoyed the song and took the time to analyze it a bit, I was listening to a lot of Dowsing at the time and I think some of their traits came through on this one. I'm very, very new to singing so I'm sure it's sub-par at best if you were to get in to that. Looking forward to hearing some of your music sometime!
30+ years? Wow, that's impressive. Thanks for all the input and encouragement, I really appreciate it. I like the idea of using a scale and trying to match the pitches, I might have to try that. A lot of the music I listen to and try to emulate is punk and garage rock, where vocal competency usually isn't anywhere near the top of the list. You might be interested to know that there's a lot of musicians here, and there are occasional collaborative songs composed and recorded by groups of people.
I remember that conversation and I'm glad that you're putting stuff out there! nowaypablo did something similar a couple days ago too (in case anyone forgot). Anyway, I bring that up and thenewgreen's recent post (oh yeah and ghostoffuffle had a couple of things . . . before he got ghosted) because I know on hubski there have been discussions of process here and there, on and off for as long as I've been on the site and sometimes people lean toward "don't show anyone anything until it's ready, or they'll inevitably think back to that first draft" which I do think is sometimes true, but on hubski I'd disagree. For one thing, I think that attitude of showing off polished pieces is very useful for dealing with people who will buy the finished thing or expect a certain level of polish, as an audience would. However, because there are so many people on hubski working on different things I think that showing off our work in progress can be useful to get ideas on process and to open things up to new perspectives (or I hope so anyway). I'm used to hearing the electronic stuff from you and I think it's really interesting to get a look at how people approach music using different sound palettes. Is the process for writing something like this very different from your electronic stuff?
I LOVE hearing music while it's being fleshed out. I have many friends that are musicians that have put out music and have shared demos, etc over the years. I got to hear some really great songs in early on acoustic versions. -Listen to where that ended up? So cool to hear the evolution first hand. By all means, artists of Hubski post your creations while in the process of creating. I post my stuff that is half finished because I never finish anything and it's likely the only time/way it will be heard. I create to share. It's sort of one of the main reasons I love being a part of Hubski so much. Both to share and to consume art. I love that!
This is the difference between community and competition. I'm not competing with anyone, the only 'internet points' here directly reflect the user who shared my post or gave me the badge, there is no need to make every presentation valuable-- in the literal sense, that it can be valued. This all exists for enjoyment, awareness, understanding, and progress. Good stuff.
A typical 3 minute long electronic song will take me between four and five hours before I'm remotely happy with it. And this is chiptune, which while it's weird and off the beaten track, isn't the most intensive thing to make. This song, I came up with the chord progression for when I'm singing and then roughly what I wanted to do between verses and for the last minute of the song. Then I wrote lyrics based off a night from high school that I might expand on. All in all it was a half hour process. This recording was my third time playing through it. Wanted to record it before it got too late out and neighbors start going to sleep.I'm used to hearing the electronic stuff from you and I think it's really interesting to get a look at how people approach music using different sound palettes. I'm glad you are sharing and I'm glad you're writing. It's hard to discern the lyrics and I would be interested to hear your voice more clearly though I know you have some recording restrictions on this one. What I can hear reminds me a bit of David Berman of The Silver Jews -GREAT band. Feel free to "shout-out" to me as you post revisions to this or more songs that you write. I'm happy to hear them. Nice work!
Thanks, it feels good to release this stuff even if it's incomplete. Unfortunately this is as good as it's going to get for the next ~2 months. But then I'll have access to PT10 and all sorts of microphones, bells, and whistles. I'll keep shouting you out with these songs. Now I'm going to spend the rest of tonight listening to American Water because it's a perfect album.
