I'm about to go on a raw juice fast with my girlfriend. Only for 7 days, but I bet it's going to be an uphill battle all the way. Luckily, I absolutely love fresh juices, but I'm not sure how I'm going to react to not having any solid meals. I'm kind of known for my appetite and eating for the pure pleasure of it. I can get downright Roman about it...

Raw juice fast? May I assume you've seen this? http://www.fatsickandnearlydead.com/

...why?

I know of no legit organizations that recommend a detox like that.

ecib  ·  4688 days ago  ·  link  ·
It's more to just imbibe completely fresh fruits and vegetables as opposed to the crap I eat usually. I don't really buy into the detox aspect of it, or even know what the claims of 'detoxing' really are. I think it's as much the stuff you aren't eating as what you are. If I stick to some arbitrary goal like 'just juice for a week' it's just easier for me to forgo things like coffee, which I need to drink less of, and meat, which I need to eat less of.

Once the week is done, I'm going to try and cut meat out except for 2 meals a week, and reduce my caffeine intake drastically, and focus on eating non-processed foods.

Okay. Just listen to your body.

Yeah, that's pretty much the plan. It's more of a 'just eat healthy shit' approach that I'm gonna kick off with juicing for a week. Not doing it for weight loss/ enlightenment/ healing/ or any of that stuff.

I do wonder how much healthier raw juice is though, than cooked veggies. They say that in cooking a lot of nutrients are lost, though I've never actually researched this. I feel like health nuts overemphasize a lot of the benefits of non traditional diets. A lot of snake oil in that movement imho, but staying away from processed foods is a sure winner any way you slice it.

Any time you see the word "cleanse" hold on to your wallet.

My wife used to run detox courses. She used the 10-day Metagenics plan. I did it once. It sucked pretty hard, and there was no shortage of protein on that one. I will say this: I pooped up stuff that I"m pretty sure I ate in the Clinton administration. But in the middle there's like three days where you're on protein shakes and cruciferous vegetables and that's fucking it.

When I finished my ten days I had a cup of Maxwell House and a breakfast burrito and it was the best meal evar.

>I pooped up stuff that I"m pretty sure I ate in the Clinton administration.

See, this seems to be the consensus of anybody I know that's done a detox. But like, is this a particularly good thing? I mean, I guess it's not bad, but is it good? Or just neutral? I dunno.

I love coffee like a bee loves honey, and I'm about as good as making it as they are too. This will be the hardest thing to give up for a week, -much harder than solid food.

Well, as far as I"m concerned, if you're gonna carry around a bowel-ful of poop, it might as well be fresh poop. e.coli is 40% of feces by volume and as far as I'm concerned the little fuckers can work for it.

I can help you with the coffee thing. Not having any for a week will make it taste so.fucking.good when you do have it... and caffeine will actually have an effect on you again. In the meantime, though, it'll suck.

Yeah I have to do this before I go to NYC in February, -they have a Stumptown coffee shop near where I'm going and they have the best cappuccino I have ever enjoyed.
gq  ·  4683 days ago  ·  link  ·
Yes! I agree! I am not even a big coffee fan, but the Stumptown cappuccino is definitely a die-for. Actually, more and more study has come out showing coffee is good for you. It can reduce the risk of different types of cancer, and it doesn't matter if it's decaf or not. Coffee has a lot of antioxidants.

Coffee (or more specifically caffeine) has also been shown to increase memory performance in women. So there ya go :)

I did a 5 day lemon juice, cayenne pepper, maple syrup drink cleanse. Be prepared for the strangest bowel movements of your life. Good luck ;)

My boss did that! Did it really have benefits? I mean, I know the effects it has, but benefits?

That's one reason I don't mind juicing, -nonprocessed fruits and veggies that haven't had the nutrients boiled out of them I can get behind. Even if it doesn't do much, I'm still putting good stuff inside me :)

It made me lose weight quickly and "flush out toxins". Not sure about the second thing but the first was indisputable. I felt "cleaner". It was rough though, I felt really out of it and the hunger pangs sucked. I didn't do it as long as some others I know... they said they felt a clarity that was amazing after 7 days.

I'm not doing it again.

I am interested to see how it works out for you. Do a daily post on it so we can share in your experience.

ecib, day 6: I had the juicer dream again, but this time I was awake. I can hear the oranges laughing. Don't try to stop me. I can do this. I must, I must. The juice must flow.

Day 7. Weak. So very weak. Nibbled pinky finger down to about half. A little gamey, but it staved off the hot flashes and dizziness. Saw cat in driveway, had a strange thought but pushed it back.

Day 7: After cat hallucination, calls Tim Cook to tell him that the feel of the iPhone 4S is off. Feels about 1/10 of a nanogram too heavy.

I will. We are going to order the juicer today or tomorrow off Amazon. Everybody in my office is doing it as well, so that should make it a little easier.

There is a small raw juice bar by my work, and it's actually totally awesome, but it's all organic, so a fresh organic juice ends up being between 6 to 9 dollars. Just too expensive. I thought Starbucks was bad...
