- America has fallen out of love with orange juice.
Sales dropped almost every year for the last decade. Last year, orange juice sales hit their lowest level in at least 15 years, according to Nielsen. Over the same period, per-capita consumption fell roughly 40%. And this year is looking to be another rough one for big orange.
A friend of mine was shocked that the pasteurization process leaves orange juice flavorless and that scent and flavor particular to a brand of orange juice is later added. Subsequently, he has sworn the stuff off. I have no problem with people having "revelations" about food, but it does bug me that my friends who grew up in the US really expect that their food is as wholesome as has been advertised, especially when the basics of advertising are well understood.
This is why I purchase frozen concentrate.
You are probably right, or close to being correct about that stuff. I should do some research on that. All I know is that to me, frozen concentrate tastes better than orange "juice" that costs the equivalent price per gallon.
Well, I'd say it's distinct from both because it includes the peel and has a very distinct flavor whereas between jelly and jam the biggest difference is texture. But closer to jam, since jellies usually just use juice. You could theoretically press citrus peels, but I just buy the stuff online. You can get cold pressed oil from all kinds of varieties of citrus for pretty cheap (a few dollars per ounce, a ton of servings considering how strong the stuff is) if you look around a bit.
I like Quartz. They frequently post interesting articles and editorials about current issues. I especially like that many of their stories include charts. I could look at charts all day
Fully understand why people have fallen out of love with orange juice. The difference between juicing oranges from a tree in your backyard and Tropicana Orange Juice almost makes you believe they don't originate from the same plant. Plus, while many people would like it freshly squeezed, many people don't like pulp!
I agree, if you're going that route you might as well go all the way and buy Sunny Delight. I have taken to juicing at home and I really love it. I don't use oranges often but I've used other citrus fruits in my concoctions; mostly lemons and grapefruit. I combine them with kale, celery and apples. -nectar of the gods. But yeah, supermarket OJ is nasty, especially from concentrate.
Trader Joe's has the closest thing to fresh tasting OJ I've yet had from a store. Pro tip!
