saldejums  ·  4065 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Should a high school diploma be required to vote?

It is utterly stupid. Firstly, nobody has ever became nice by force. There are no decent people to vote for. My country's population 55% are left leaning, but we have never had leftist party since USSR fell. Your nationalistic teachers never tell who killed millions of jews, deported millions of natives and recolonized the land, they simply say "communism" or "socialism". Those are two terms derogated to synonyms.

I am aware that in The land of the Free you have only two parties at all - what on earth a choice is that?

Take a look at Russia, Belarus. The voting there is for idiots who still think that they count. No electorate matters there, the elections are clearly rigged, just like in most of Africa.

I do not vote since there is nobody who represents my values and there will never be anybody who represents all my values, who listens my problems and who cares enough. I do not want to participate in your rigged elections.

I despise your fascist regime and fascist ideas.

saldejums  ·  4152 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What's an important skill to have?

Suggestion I suggest you and am trying to follow while without work:

* Get up in the morning and run - 10-20 min., but do it. I was very skeptical about running too, but after my first 6km cross I signed up for many 5 to 10km running things. It strengthens all your body, it does not take long, you get to know people and actually do feel happier;

* Get into cold shower next - not only you will feel amazing, alive after running, but will be ready for anything after such a happiness, testosterone boost!;

* Get a light breakfast, something from yesterday evening what is left and veggies;

* Do whatever you want;

* Run in the evening for as much as you wish, it is great thing to do before bed;

* Prepare something you can from the things you have - there are numerous websites with daily recipes, simple, cheap and healthy, you will never go wrong with learning how to cook. The simple idea what to do and how to feel things is important - not remembering the recipes one by one. Be sure to leave something for the morning to smash an egg on top and fry, or put on a bread - your pick;

* Read few pages of book (if you have the idea of speed reading) and just between brushing your teeth and going to sleep close your eyes and meditate - think about nothing, blend in the environment, you are not there, you are THERE (as in environment) and after you get distracted by your thoughts, think and imagine what you want to achieve, what you crave and want to be, how will that feel, what are the perspectives... and you are asleep..

I don't believe that people can be focused on one thing for 10k hours straight, so these are just a common advices on keep yourself fit, help your immune system, happiness and testosterone, learn how to cook basic stuff, read a bit or perhaps start a small journal (I started a journal during my volunteering abroad and it is amazing thing to have), relax your brain and use the secret** to attract what you want the most!

In mean time do whatever swings your boat! For me it is cycling and basic mechanics

saldejums  ·  3974 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Will we ever discover new emotions?

I think it depends on the language. Every language has its own names for emotions, some are missing one emotion and have other names for other sets and intensities of emotion that others do not have.

For instance, in my native language there are 7 forms + 2 genders + diminutives for every word. We have a huge collection of words, which stand for one concrete thing, unlike in English. But I still miss a proper word for "Excited" as in [I am excited]. There is no possible way to tell "I am excited" in my language, despite having the word for "exciting". It just is impossible to fashion the word to the feeling due to grammar and it would sound very awkward. So we have to resort to use it in English, or improvise a whole new sentence to tell it.

But English, Russian, Romanian, Polish and pretty much every language I know, lack the word for other emotion, which we have a name for - "Laime".

English equivalent of "Laime" is "happiness". But Latvian equivalent of "Happiness" is "Prieks". You should treat the word "Laime" as a more joyful, happy, sincere and genuine word, divine word, something very special, even connected to love.

We say "Priecks"/"Priecīgs" when we feel joy, moderate happiness about something - be it small things that make us happy, or be it a new car. It is like really genuine "Joy" in English (but Joy is not "Prieks", it is "Bauda").

We say "Laime"/"Laimīgs" when we feel so overwhelmingly happy and satisfied of everything - our life, children, careers, very sincere gifts. It is as pure emotion as it can be! It is something divine, uplifting, something what makes us forget all the trouble.

Unfortunately, you will not find "Laime" used as often in Latvian as "Happy" in English, since "Laime" is much harder to achieve, nearly impossible in our day and age. The word is not therefore beat up and overused - it shows much stronger emotion when used properly. I use it when I feel endlessly, unconditionally in love.

So, as for your question - I think we as a humanity have felt all the emotions, depends on our local culture and influences, if jealousy, hate, love, or other emotions are more acceptable than elsewhere. Our languages give words a far more significant meaning to the same emotions other people don't have the word for in most other languages. Fernweh, scriptulient, Ultracrepidarian, Waldeinsamkeit. Every language is a new treasure cove of words which you may never grok! You may live all your life feeling emotions you will never have the word for.

There even is a word for a dance people accidentally dance when giving right of way to one another by stepping aside, but always end up in front of one another; can't find it right now.

But without down-votes you end up with silly facebook and 9gag content. If you stoically see downvotes it should not alter your mood. You are the master of your mood, not the random people that dislike your comment, or weather or politics.

Imagine a large feed straight with news, and all get only upvotes - general population will upvote cats instead of any actual news. There is no way how to combat low quality content if you have option only to upvote. It does not work in /r/all, but downvotes are very crucial part of every smaller subreddit.

saldejums  ·  4017 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Aether: reddit + bittorrent

The problem with reddit is very simple - everybody wants to be a moderator. So already small subreddits are splkit in meaningless small fractions, which all are mostly dead due to inactivity, the users do not know where the post would be more appropriate, so they do not post. In the end we have very segregated and dead communities - outdoors, anarchism, even NSFW porn network is being segregated beyond any point.

What 4chan does is they made boards where you post things in general by interests - /out/, /p/hotography, so it all is kept by the community to die, age or to continue.

Have no experience with usenet, would be glad to hear something about it. Nothing much is heard nowadays.

I am also impatiently waiting for unix client of this.

saldejums  ·  4166 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why Have Sex?

Well, take it as explaining sunrise to a blind person.

Thank you for your reply, I understand what you are talking about.

Still I see that rejection, failure not getting what you want and biological pressure generated down there makes the stress even bigger, people get angry and vent it outside by drinking, aggressive driving or doing something else silly and harm people on their way. The characteristics and emotions of people are shaped by so many things - genes, parenting, environment, society, social status and we cannot just simply explain "why you, another human being, are repressing me and making me sad because you do not give me your body".

saldejums  ·  4168 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why Have Sex?

i am not very interested in sex, even anti-interested, and I still have no idea why would anybody want to do that without the intention to make a copy of yourself, as if it was needed.

I think it would make life much easier, pleasurable, enjoyable if people wouldn't be as primitively thinking about it and singing for as much primitive people about that, and we could get rid of all those really terrible, disturbing advertisements. It would make life much more real, interesting, not annoying for asexuals, because hearing the same on the radios, in the shops, TV's, talking about that so much. Before finding out that people actually eel different than me I thought it is a bad-taste global joke.

In my perfect world, people are free from listening how people flirt, say very very disturbing things, where nobody is bullied because he's appearance is different, his interests are different, he is weaker or with less attractive human being. Also there wouldn't be people who are bullying others just to prove their alpha side to their potential partners. Unfortunately hardly for any reason to do that I can relate to.

* pleasure - can't relate to that. It is like "meh";

* stress relief - if there was no need to have sex, there would be far less stressful people. I was astounded to see a female who is angry, discontent, screaming at everybody just because she didn't see her BF for a week. Male's wouldn't be wacko's driving their cars so fast and being aggressive to all the society, because they are needy. The will for sex makes people stressed.

* exercise - Very terrible way of exercise and good article to read. If we spend more calories raking leaves or walking, then why walking or raking leaves is not an exercise?;

* sexual curiosity - can't last a lifetime;

* attraction - does not explain why people need sex. Many people are attracted to power, wealth, cars, things, but I have yet to see how you can make an intercourse with a car, coins or power;

* love - see step above;

* commitment - "..to do sex?" or ..? If I am committed to study German that does not mean that sex magically happens;

* procreation - genuine reason, which with some genetic researches can and should become obsolete. Imagine, our bodies carry not only the good stuff, and there are many things which can be transmitted to the children even before birth, it makes much more sense to alter the genes and not only reduce or eliminate the risk, but make improvements for the better life of your offspring;

* social status - if you share your most intimate moments on facebook, then yes, it is a valid point;

* revenge - plainly stupid;

* boost self-esteem - people should learn to appreciate and be content with themselves without needing somebody external. I do not believe that only source of happiness can come from expecting other to appreciate you.

Now, count how many logical reasons are there to have sex and what are the benefits of being able to weed that need away and being able to make better, healthier, stronger human beings for the benefit of all.

saldejums  ·  4184 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How many times have you moved? Any of them memorable?

I have heard that my father is arriving soon from the work abroad. Never had good relationships with my mother. Impulsively took fathers car, picked up some box, loaded everything I had in there, went to the flat and unpacked everything.

Two weeks later stuffed my small, vintage cardboard suitcase with all my least valuable possessions - shirts, trousers, everything I wanted to get rid of, and went volunteering to Romania.

Now a month to move back to my flat, I have no idea what to put in my suitcase. Only few articles of clothing left, have a diary, some diplomas and medals, tourism guides.

saldejums  ·  4288 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What is something you'd like to own, but would never buy?

I have never bought a phone and felt much better when I had none. Probably because I do not use "phone" feature and probably because of RMS intrusive to my life. Then there is always somebody who asks why I do not have one and quickly finds in treasure drawer some outdated phone that still has the life in it.

Currently it is some discontinued Sony Ericsson, with cracked screen, some unnecessary buttons are not working, but it has some o.k. camera for technical stuff and measurements I need and the most active feature is e-mail. With only few euros I get 150 mb for free, with which I can survive for at least two months of active emailing.

Why I like emails:

* everybody has an email;

* if you lose your pre-pay, you don't have to buy new string of characters to contact you;

* nowadays everybody receives emails in their phones;

* I can use more than 160 symbols and with all the necessary diacritics - āēšžčŗģūņīķļō usually take up 30-50 symbols at once, which makes sms very expensive, not talking about cyrilic..;

What would I do with smartphone then? More tools - wolframalpha, GPS could be handy (since handheld is too large), TED talks, linphone, RSS, QR codes are more widely used everywhere. That would significantly reduce time I waste on a desktop computer usually doing unnecessary stuff in parallel to "checking out news".

The author must be indeed very creative and out-of-the-box thinker.

I have never been registered in bookface and I will never will. As far as I have seen, people do not share anything worthwhile anyway. As of self-expression, personal growth, learning, support and civic exchange - there are thousands of mediums to use and still everybody has a phone, an email, postal address or simply lives on the other side of the city.

Until now invasive social media sites like bookface prevented me from viewing something interesting on some event, so I lost interest immediately. If you are scum enough to share it to your closed circle of supporters, then you are not worthy of my time.

Sorry for misunderstanding. Have a nice day :)

saldejums  ·  4065 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Should a high school diploma be required to vote?

I honestly have no idea how many dots I have. I use that zen setting thing and like to be oblivious to this election.

I just find your point of view offensive. Firstly it is immoral to exclude somebody from elections because he does not have highschool diploma - we all live in the same pot and we all should be equal part of the soup. If we even further ban electorate - immigrants, sex offenders, people who use instagram, far leftists, far rightists, muslims, blacks - the election becomes pointless elite gathering. We all should be equal and nobody should float on top. Those who want to get to the power and equally those who want to help people will find how to promote themselves. Protip: good ideas do not need advertisements, they are spoken about.

On the other hand, if there are nobody who represents ANY of my values at all, I am not exaggerating, my country does not have any party that even thinks of leaning left, who should I vote for? Why should I waste my time, energy and life to go and elect "the lesser evil" who will continue his fascist oppression and command everybody when and how to vote, how to think and who to hate? "You are scum because you do not vote" is invalid. I cannot find the source to prove, but in some European countries if notable part of population boycotts or ignores the elections, it is considered civil disobedience and new government can't be formed. Heck, the Belgians lived 591 days without government!

If you ran a government, oh you would have a hard time running it.

We should free and liberate people, make lives easier, take care of the things what people do not want to do every day, like fighting in wars, repairing roads, collect their own wheat every day, put in sewer system and worry if they will not freeze in winter or if they will be saved in spring floods. Forcing yourself on others is wrong. If you have your representative and think that he knows better what you want, how to care for you, how make your life easier - go on and vote. Forcing me to vote for your idea? I do not want to be responsible for somebody I do not know, if I doubt his good intentions, if I know that he had acted against my ideals and values.

As Boris Yeltsin supposedly said, "You can build a throne with bayonets, but you can't sit on it long."

/Yet I am only some random creep on the internet who does not like oppression, dictatorship and fascism you propagate/

Dates. Sweet, no white death, useful.

saldejums  ·  4168 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why Have Sex?

Thanks for your reply, it really cleared some of my skeptics and I understand how that may achieve what you have showed me, even if I do not completely understand or can imagine the mechanics behind that.

I believe that everybody has his own head, arms and legs and you cannot simply become more socially better just because some other as person as you are, has decided to engage with you in a marriage. I don't think that it is right to judge one person just because he is married/have sex with another, just like if my small brother marries Merkel does not make him a better or more of a person, just like that does not magically increase his charisma or politician skills.

The oppression with propagating sex is not only against asexuals, but to human society as all. There are people who can not do that because they are not attractive enough and all the western cheap music and media makes them feel worse, saying that "You do not have «The best feeling in the world»!" It plays also against older people who have lost the ability to have or enjoy that, brainwashes children to desperately seek it even if they do not want it, but because "everybody else do that," and there is terrible voice screaming over every corner "I just had sex" through every sound device, barring into the mind "It is good, it is the best feeling ever, everybody has it, the more you have it, the more successful you become, closer to the stars on the telly."

It is just incorrect to propagate and use it for the marketing purpose for the very same reasons as ads containing hidden messages, racism and hatred are banned.

saldejums  ·  4168 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why Have Sex?

I am not propagating anything and do not want to force my opinion on others. I am just tired of that stuff just like everybody is tired of religion and atheism and poverty and other things.

I would be very interested how do you see this list of things. I cannot imagine how having sex can increase your social status or how need for sex doesn't make you stressed

saldejums  ·  4168 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why Have Sex?

That is just a topic I cannot comprehend and my personal, subjective way how I see it. You have just peaked in how certain people see that.

About stress: Exactly. It is quite hard not to think about it with all the naked advertisements, western music, even for somebody who is completely uninterested in that. I clearly remember how a pack of smokes always stressed me when i felt it in my pocket. I stopped smoking right after five years just by not having one in my pocket.

saldejums  ·  4168 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What languages do you speak?

Latvian is my native language - oldest living indo-european language, very archaic, yet modern, makes much more sense than English and very easy to read/listen. I understand Latgalian and Lithuanian a bit because of it.

Russian - my second native language, as my mother is Russian. Understand everything, but talking has to be practiced, since I haven't used it for 8 years very much. Because of knowing the language very well many other Slavic languages seems very familiar and easy to understand, especially Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Yugoslav, but it keeps getting harder with Polish and Czech, where I understand around 40%;

English - is not a native, but I have been learning it since 2nd grade and not many media is translated into Latvian, so I understand everything very well, am able to write, hold conversations, see the differences between American-English, British-English and use semicolons. My verbal communication was better before volunteering in place where everybody understand only simple, few word sentences;

German - Currently learning, just for fun, since I do not go to University. I can not hold a meaningful conversation, but know enough words and rules to tell very basic things and to understand by context what parents are saying to their children;

Arabic - only the alphabet, was very interested and still am in a language, but haven't found as good source to learn it as duolingo for German. Since I discovered duolingo, I have stopped learning Arabic. Nothing more than Hello, goodbye, God is great, thank you.

EDIT: I keep forgetting that - Romanian, since I volunteer in Romania for 8 months and this is the last week. I know basic phrases, less than in German, but understand the same level as German language. Just enough Romanian to be kind, ask for price, directions, understand the reply on "How are you/Whats up?" talk about work, strawberries, UK, differences of the countries with drivers who take hitchhikers

I am, by no means any professional, I just like to share my experiences on D* which I really want to like, place all hopes and currently agree on their philosophy, but I see the point of blogs to be written for projects by multiple authors. About professional sharing of knowledge I still can't find anything better solution than ikiwiki.

Currently I am taking part in one project where, unfortunately, I am not even a sysadmin, but we have to write our stuff on Joomla with very terrible layout and theme, where basically you see many poorly placed, over-sized buttons which appear on top and the same on the right side and you can find about three lines of text per article, just right after you scroll past by large buttons, some pictures stolen from the internet, "about the project" stuff, which is not helpful if you want users to come back, past the obligatory links to partners aaaaand, if you yet are not bored enough scrolling, you arrive on the bottom of the page with more images and buttons to partners and dedicated about page. Somewhere between that you can see three small links to three small articles with three introduction lines. It could have been better to have the most simple wordpress engine.

And if you are a Romanian plumber, please, for Ada Lovelace's sake, do not side-hustle in IT..
