No, these are all surfaces. The ones that look like solids are actually just the surfaces of the solid. For example, the "cube" which is defined by x^6y^6z^6=1, if you wanted the whole solid, you would have to put it as x^6y^6z^6 is less than or equal to 1. Otherwise, even the point (0,0,0) doesn't belong.

Ugh this is disgusting.

I agree. This test does not actually test religious knowledge.

31/32 - Atheist. Knew all the answers except for the Great Awakening question, and guessed 50/50. Missed it :/
It put me as 1983, but I'm 1991! I don't really know why.
8 years off for me
riemannman  ·  4607 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Who commits the most common type of rape - acquaintance rape?
While I agree, I think society has yet to condemn acquaintance rape in a way that would make all those who commit it realize what they are doing is wrong. A surprising number of men commit rape but don't even realize what they are doing is wrong and don't realize it's rape.

When society thinks of rape, it imagines a stranger with a gun in a dark alley. In most cases though, it couldn't be farther from the truth.

While I agree on both counts, I think greater social change is in order to fix our issues with rape/sexual assault.
riemannman  ·  4610 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Evil of Being "Normal"
One more thing, how true is this exactly?

>However, the common assumption about me, portrayed by the media (both "independent" and more conventional), is that I am a pig; that I am racist, sexist, constantly horny, and unable to express emotion. The same thing goes for my father, who actually does make a good amount of money, and has trouble expressing emotions. I am told, both by special interest groups and by society at large, that I am a bad person.

Maybe we live in vastly different places on the globe, but I've never felt those stereotypes levied against me. Furthermore, do these stereotypes seep into every aspect of your life like stereotypes of other groups do for them? Do they keep men from getting jobs? Do they make people subconsciously value you as a lesser member of society? Are they portrayed in the media day in and day out? Are they part of the very social fabric of society?

Your whole post is about competition about victimization. But it really seems to me that you are the one trying to compete. Societal oppression of men is pretty much non-existent - except through gender roles which negatively affect both men and women.

riemannman  ·  4610 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 10 most challenged books of 2011
This comment sends me ageist vibes. What does youth have to do with it?

Also, following proper English grammar says nothing about literacy. Maybe we should all stop criticizing the text and pick up the book and read it first.

I'm pretty sure Mark Twain's novels are a pretty apt analogy in this situation. (Not the quality of the content, but in the sense that the dialect/writing format it is written in should not directly affect what we think of the work.)

riemannman  ·  4610 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Evil of Being "Normal"
Society may be saying these things, but society is pretty fucking stupid sometimes. I would argue though that any mis-characterization of white, cis-gendered, straight men is greatly swamped by the negative stereotypes associated with other social groups. While you take exception with idealizing people like us as "normal" because of your perceived negative effects on people like us, I ask you to consider what it is like to be considered "abnormal" by society.

But regardless, what feminists ask is that those who are white, cisgendered, straight, educated, able-bodied, etc. etc. is that we constantly check our privilege. Being the "normal" has EXTREME privileges that we can't even begin to understand completely, since we have never fully experienced the barriers that other groups of people have.

I've actually never heard of quora before. It seems much better than other social aggregate sites like reddit, 9gag, etc. It does require access to facebook though, which I dislike.

Ha. True.

Ignored.

riemannman  ·  4611 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What is the point of this site?
You don't have to stay if you don't like it. But as this is a user-centric site, you could submit things that you like and maybe it will gel with the users here. You can ignore users whose submissions you really dislike.

I think this case is a little different though. Your posts/shares take up a lot of my feed sometimes, but I enjoy it because the content/websites are varied and you interact with the posts. This user posts to the same website constantly, and never comments. I think it might even be a bot.

Thanks for donating so much!!! The people who founded that organization are actually some of my closest friends.

I must say I am really enjoying these hubski sticker posts. They're a lot of fun :)

Who else plays the bass here on hubski???

I think ideally, Hubski will have all the features that you will need without any browser extension. I personally feel that an enhancement suite is very much reddit-ish, and I'd like hubski to steer clear of that path.
riemannman  ·  4612 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Grrrrrrrrrrr
I was thinking about that too. Is it healthy that hubski is taking these issues on a case by case basis? I would suppose so... for now. Only because of how small a community this is at the moment. But there are bigger issues that lay down the road for hubski if the site expands. How will hubski deal with hate speech? What happens if a large portion of the user base starts to use hubski as a cat-pic/rage comic exchange? Are these questions that need answers now, or ones that mk and others will deal with later?
riemannman  ·  4612 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Julian Friedland: Philosophy Is Not a Science
I also hate when scientists disparage the field of philosophy. But, that should not be confused with scientists disparaging philosophers, or the current state of philosophy studies. A reoccurring complaint within science departments is the social science's frequent lack of academic rigor. I am reminded of the Sokal affair (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokal_affair). Another criticism is that philosophers' understanding of certain branches of science (especially quantum mechanics and cosmology) is subpar, and renders them unable to really discuss fundamental questions in philosophy with all the tools we currently have available.

I am taking a philosophy of religion course, and we discuss evolution, cosmology, and other scientific theories and their impact on the philosophy of religion. My professor has on multiple occasions expressed frustration with others in the field of philosophy who misuse or under-use science. The Big Bang, evolution, relativity, quantum mechanics fundamentally changed many of our long held beliefs - and as such, every philosopher should know science extremely well.

I think mk specifically doesn't want to do that for tags because of the emphasis on users just as much as content. I think that they expect you to unfollow thenewgreen if you don't like many of those tags.
