Back when I had a scanner, I used to do this type of thing by hand and post 'em weekly.

I kept thinking about updating it, but didn't think my digital stuff would fit very well (even now, that last post seems out of place ;p)

The old wordpress if interested:

This is really neat and awesome!

I'm also glad it's going to be nature themed, rather than "<-- Witches House | Cat Bus Rides -->"

hats  ·  3367 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Rotational Grazing Allen Savory, a confusing video and paper I wrote on it

Nice paper! I didn't watch the video, though... I used to love watching TED Talks, but have been avoiding them lately. (I think, probably, maybe, because of a Hubski post ;p)

Anyway, I've always had an interest in permaculture and love the zoning idea for cities; it just makes sense to me. Especially when I think about cities like Detroit -- imagine taking all those empty buildings and returning them to farmland. Blocks and blocks (you'd have to clear away a lot of stuff, of course) Lot of possibilities, imo, especially since nobody seems to want anything to do with it (haven't checked up on it in a bit, so I'm only assuming)

Or, honestly, it could easily be scaled down to Town-size; most rural folks (like myself) I know already grow their own foodstuffs; permaculture right up to the town limits and even spilling over into parks.

It's a lovely idea and I applaud you for writing about it - gets me motivated and helps idea spin. I'd love to hear more ideas and see more plans!

Hope you don't mind, but... I played around with it a bit. Unfortunately couldn't get your sig fully (it's cut off in the org a bit) nor perfectly straight and cropped... But, that's my failing.

After doing a lot of zooming and such, I've come to appreciate your attention to detail a lot!

Again, keep it up~

(it'll be posted here and only here but will happily remove it if asked!)

p.s. Do you have a title for your piece?

hats  ·  3377 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Still here, still drawing every day. Would love some feedback!

Very nice perspective!

Lovin' the colors as well, but would love to see it a bit more contrasting. Dark, grimy streets and gloomy (maybe a slight haze/fog?) in stark contrast to your wonderfully bright and glowing neon. I honestly haven't worked with pens/pencils in ages though, so super kudos!

Do you like/have you ever tried oil pastels? I think you might enjoy playing with those a bit and have fun layering, smoothing and blending.

The only "negative" (and don't think of it as that way, please) critique I could give is the focal character... Not sure if it's the perspective, proportions or the circumference of each arm being different.. but it seems a little off. It blends well with the other characters in the background to not be too jarring... but the more I stare at it (which, it is a main focal point ;d) the less I'm able to pin down what feels slightly awkward about it.

Overall, however - love it :D

Keep up this wonderful work! I look forward to seeing more.

Ah, understood!

When I had sketches to follow, I loved character work. However, due to various reasons or another, I no longer have sketches to work from... so, I rely instead on mathematics to try and fill the gap. (If that makes sense)

I do have copies of copies of my previous stuff when sketches were abundant. They're low res due to a fire taking out, well... everything. Even the original sketches are gone and my wife's computer (which had said copies of copies) was the only hardware to survive. (It was in the car with us and the animals - the moving van caught on fire/was hosed down)

And, finally, one of my own, strange creations based solely on my imagination... "Psyclops"

...I'm still lookin' for sketch artists to collaborate with, honestly. So, in the meantime my outlet is, well... geometry. 'Cause by myself it doesn't look so good ;p

Sorry, it was a "working/untitled" piece until a great suggestion for a title was commented.

I'm sorry for the confusion! (or if I broke a rule... still kinda new)

I really, really like that last one. It's official.

"Can You See Your Conscience"

Thanks so much!

The hat is a new addition; I've really liked the moniker "Hats" for a while and I've worn the same hat for 20+ years (a flat, brown "golfer" type hat). But I've lost it many times (and refound it as many) that it's had varied attempts at replacements.

My initials looking like a guy is also new to me; didn't really click until I added the hat... I've signed my initials that way for a while (it's "JS" - I make my J's weird). It was something I could scribble down really quick when I had to do tons of paperwork. Most folks think it's an "M" ;p

...sorry for the long explanation, I get excited.

tl;dr it's a guy with a hat, yeah... but I didn't do it on purpose at first ;d

Glad you enjoy! I'll be sure to keep more coming :)

Thanks for the feedback!

I played around with it a bit more based on your suggestions and have a "Part B"~

I may revisit it later to tweak it, but for now I'm satisfied. Onward to the next!

Thanks again! I'd really like to see what you come up with/generate on your end, Cedar!

If you're interested:

In Illustrator I started with a golden rectangle, divided into itself 7 times (I think) with a golden spiral inside. I then copied that and rotated it at 45 degrees around the smallest inner-rectangle until it went "full circle."

I then took that and removed the largest of each rectangles from each copy (and the original)... then took that and copied it over and reflected it and centered them over-top of each other.

After some selective line removal, it was put into photoshop and colored, with a few overlays for shading.

hats  ·  3422 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Volkswagen Foldable Electric Scooters To Be Launched In 2016

Hm. Hard to get excited about this.

Honest opinion time:

Feels kinda like it's aimed toward the "I want a Razor but I'm an adult" demographic. I have a friend like that... but he owns a Razor ($50 craigslist). To gear away from that... maybe consider a fold-able seat that's opposite the handle? Otherwise I get a "Hmm... expensive skateboard feel" (or, at the very least, visions of a Segway)

Then again, it's probably aimed toward the middle- ~ upper- class... maybe that's too opinionated, sorry ;p But... I can go down the road to my 'Scooter shop and get a gas-powered knock-off "vespa" for 1/4 the price. Sure, it'd be gas, but that means I could (hypothetically) tinker with it and won't have to (hypothetically) worry if there's an outlet where I'm headed to.

Now, if VW were to build a high-efficient, gas-powered scooter (with a seat, haha) I'd be willing to save up 2k and get one. Quite a few possibilities that route, imo... I'm thinking "dune scooters"

Also, it'd be cool to know the weight... it's fold-able, but is it feasibly portable? Top speed? Typical battery life? (I know it's early, but a basic idea would be cool)

(Note: It is my belief that until we are more reliant on alternate energy sources, "full electric" isn't much more energy efficient. Especially that, as of this writing, my Governor's (IN) stance on the matter is that we're staying Coal, regardless of federal regulation)

hats  ·  3426 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why I Defaulted on My Student Loans

Heya.

Not to be a negative nancy...

I worked for a company that gathered information on deceased and incarcerated individuals who still owed Student Loans via the Department of Education.

...as far as I know - Dying and being in Prison (the later which only freezes it) are the only way(s) to "get out" of a student loan. At least, as far as the DoE is concerned. It has, though, been a few years... but I'm pretty sure you're not going to be done with this for quite some time, even if you think you are.

Good luck during tax time and any income coming in :/ (Yes, they can/will garnish wages - again, though... been a few years)

He (and you) may also enjoy Aesop Rock, if ya haven't given him a try.

Also, forgive my ignorance, but I tried to find "MF DOOM (The Mouse and The Mask) but came up with various results... I dug what I've heard thus far, but do you have a link and/or an extended recommendation?
