"Inspired by" seems... a bit cheeky.

From Dusk till Dawn?

I love spy novels. I'm terrible with reviews...

I'm happy to give you my thoughts, but I can't guarantee they'll be any good!

In any case, thanks for the recommendations!

Vegemite by the spoonful directly from the jar. Who needs bread?

Oh! It's also a must for bolognese sauce!

I've brought Vegemite abroad with me before. It definitely got... mixed reactions.

I hate Marmite, like most sane people.

Good luck trying to convince my partner that Vegemite is superior.

I've been meaning to check out Voice of America and DW. Thanks again for recommending them!

I'm not sure about Rosetta Stone. I've never looked into any of the language learning software packages. While classes are expensive, I think they're the only way that I'll actually learn much. I'm a terrible student when I have to hold myself accountable.

I did try the "Language in 10 minutes a day" books. I have Russian and Spanish sitting around somewhere. Can't remember where on earth I put them though.

I think it definitely helps having a set topic for each week. On Tuesday, we were discussing:

    ¿Qué tanto conoces Latínoamérica?

Lots of interesting vocabulary and history!

The Mexican government has primary school books available here if you're interested!

I still think people are skeptical when they hear about wood buildings and their safety.

I mentioned this article to my partner and the first thing he said was 'fire hazard'. I suspect you might be right.

I'm more than happy to try some light conversations!

You'll have to forgive me in advance though if my sentences are super simplistic.

Todavía no se muchas palabras! So we'll still be in the same boat :)

I've found the same with some artists I love - Google will have whole albums that aren't available on Spotify for whatever reason. Can be quite frustrating!

I'm currently working my way through a one month trial of Google Music to see how I like it, but Spotify seems to be far superior!

My little sister just got me onto Angie McMahon. Was listening to her on the tram to work today and I'm a little upset there's not more on Spotify.

It's nice, but I think the Black Bay looks best in steel.

I think my favourite of the bunch has to be the F. P. Journe which is surprising, because I'm not usually a fan of busy dials.

I feel like this is busy, but doesn't seem cluttered.

What a perfect place to start!

fletcher  ·  1972 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: ONLYWATCH 2019

Oh lordy. That Patek is something else.

I'm only going to my second class tomorrow, so you're in good company.

    Yo tengo mas preguntas

Yo también! Looking forward to figuring out what they are. My favourite so far is: ¿Cómo se dice ___?

I'm also trying to learn Spanish! Although I'm going through a structured 8 week course. I tried the teach yourself thing a few times and found it hard to get into good habits.

If you're ever looking for another speaking buddy, let me know! I know I could use the practice.

This is good tram-ride-home-after-a-long-day-of-work music. Thanks :)

fletcher  ·  1987 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Squirrel Power!

Some utilities have installed the kind of plastic owl used to keep pigeons off building facades. However, an industry study notes, “one utility reported that the fake owl was attacked by a hawk which in turn caused a substation outage.”

Oh dear...

Thank goodness Koalas are too lazy to do too much damage.

I've been trying to find similar instances of this happening Down Under, but if it is occurring, there doesn't appear to be much news coverage of it. We certainly don't seem to have a Wikipedia page dedicated to the phenomenon!

fletcher  ·  1990 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 334th Weekly "Share Some Music You've Been Into Lately" Thread

I've only just heard about Lianne La Havas, and was already in love with her.

Now even more so. Damn.

fletcher  ·  1990 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Let's have a book thread! What have you been reading?

I'm currently working through A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. It's slow going at the moment but I'm confident I'll get through it soon.

Next up is House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I've heard interesting things about this book. It's... interactive? In a way? I have thumbed through the pages a few times and it looks very interesting. I've been told there are sections in which it helps to have a mirror handy. Sounds like fun!

fletcher  ·  1991 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: There is no mirror --

I'm a fan of NI. Unfortunately I've had issues with their Maschine products. But I'm very interested in the Komplete Kontrol A25.

I might actually be able to both afford it and have space for it!

fletcher  ·  1992 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: There is no mirror --

Noted. Thanks! :)

My biggest frustration is that I don't have something portable that also allows good, tactile input.

My keyboard is great - but it's bulky and I can't really arrange my study to fit it to allow composing or use as a MIDI controller.

My only other option at the moment is a Korg nanoKEY2 which feels... meh.

fletcher  ·  1993 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: There is no mirror --

Nice! I'd love to get a proper synth, but my current living space just won't allow it. I can barely get away with my keyboard. Trying to get it hooked up to the computer to utilise the MIDI function is a nightmare.

I guess I'll be relying on VST for a while longer!

The Juno's got a great sound on this track though! I'll have to try and make some submissions to the hubski original music club soon.

fletcher  ·  1994 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: There is no mirror --

Digging the harmonies!

What's the synth you've got going in the background there?

fletcher  ·  1993 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 334th Weekly "Share Some Music You've Been Into Lately" Thread

Some of the songs from FotB are really starting to grow on me.

Still not entirely sure about the album as a whole, but I'm not disappointed.
