We know nothing.
Believe nothing.
"The only truth you can point to is the ever-changing truth of your own experience." - from Marat-Sade a play by Peter Weiss. Maybe.
Great sleuthing lil! Don't ask me how, but I was able to find this piece of paper that Professor Kohl used over 20 years ago to write his goals down: In all seriousness though, I write down goals. I know it is considered cheesy but it works. I also make daily lists of things I want to accomplish. This also works well. There's the old saying, "even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then" and while that is true, the squirrels that see find shit-loads of them :)
Kohl has a lot of company on that myth. Someone in his office should tell him the stats have been thoroughly debunked. I totally believe in goals. I also believe I have to break the goals down into a manageable to do list - whoo hoo - that's the hard part. The internet says that Dr. Kohl also said this: “Better is better before bigger is better.” So maybe also The merry get merrier before the more get merrier? maybe not.Propagate a myth until it becomes fact.
Great find. I needed that giggle just now.
Sometimes I like to ask, "what do I understand?" instead of "what do I know?" I find that that makes things a bit more manageable for me sometimes. I think that too often people want to know What is True, without really thinking about what they would do if they ever found The Truth. I also think that this feeds in the desire to Believe in something. I won't say that I'm not guilty of these things myself, but I will say that once I understood that every person is able to manipulate their own realities and therefore the reality we all think we share, not knowing things became a lot less worrying. Goals are one way we can change our realities for ourselves. However, most of us are taught that Goals are Big, when really, goals are made up of lots of little parts. I guess you could call them micro goals, or nano goals. Whatever. Right now, I have my long term goals set, but I am unsure whether or not my micro goals are sufficient to get me to where I want to go, but that's ok. Goals need some flexibility; often when we are looking for something we think we want, we find what we really want (or at least what we really don't want).
Thank you, Lil, for following up on Dr. Kohl's claims re goal setting. My guess is most of us have numerous goals. Many are likely to be somewhat trivial. For example, my goal today is to do what I can to avoid the unbearable heat and humidity which has settled over most of Eastern Canada and the USA. Many are unstated: living a rewarding and fulfilling life. spending time with my friends, sharing quality time with my lover, reading a good book, seeing an insightful film, listening to an accomplished string quartet (as I did last weekend at the Elora Music Festival). These two are goals which define us.
excellent post lil. I just had a two hour "discussion" (pronounced "argument") with a friend over lunch about this topic. He loves to foward emails and share reshares on facebook about how evil this political figure is or how demonic that corporation is. I've stopped trying to show him the error of his forwarding/resharing ways. He chooses to believe the things that he does.
