Honestly I've found that the stigma is diminishing. There seem to be enough people that enjoy the games to push the idea from "nerdy, antisocial" into the same space as board games.
In other words, the subculture is growing.

Through personal experience? -I'm a gamer myself.
I'd like to think that the stigma is lifting; but I have friends that are still very uncomfortable talking about rpgs in mixed company where they'd easily talk about a game of monopoly. Maybe talking about Settlers of Catan would be different? I have friends that won't play Magic the Gathering in public. I wonder if 'geek' or 'nerd' is best defined by someone that is willing to pursue their interests regardless of social norms. It's a pity that a certain number of people need to approve of even a mundane pastime before many will partake.
