I bought Logic and used if for a few months, but it just felt liKe it had to many options, buttons, menus etc... (Still have it though and do use it for a few things like electric piano and some other features). I use Garageband and love it, it's simple, quick and has everything i need. Sounds like Brian has a tone of gear, does he record or have a soundcloud? Steve I meant to ask you do you have any photos of where you record at home, I love to see where people play and their set ups?
I have garage band too. So does Brian. I've not really used it much but I'm guessing that it is pretty intuitive. What do you think about writing and recording a song by Sunday (week from today) and sharing it? Doesn't have to be anything amazing, just an exercise to get us writing and recording. I did this once with my friend Gareth and he suggested that we each write a "Joyful" song. Here is my "Joyful song" -So you see that it isn't anything brilliant. It was fun to make though. So, what do you say? We don't need to make a category, just write a song. Something you've not previously written. You game?
A complete song? Can it be one I started tonight, just a part that needs all other parts?
Also: I don't have any good pictures of my recording space, but it's nothing to write home about. You can see some of my gear HERE as well as a bunch of other "hubskiers". You should post some pics of your set up there.
Sure. I think the key thing is to not over think it and just have fun. Also, I've been recording podcasts, you can check them out here: #tngpodcast and I was wondering if I could use some instrumental music from you? Check them out and let me know if you're okay with that.
Will Brian be completing a song by Sun as well?
I don't think so but I'll call him today and see if he's down. He doesn't write a lot of originals but likes to record his version of cover songs. I'll see though
Ok, this will make me possibly finish a song for the first time ever. My instrumentals are only 1-1.5 min long only and I never use a metrenone. Do you have one or some you would like (time Of snippet on Soundcloud)? I'll check out the podcast tomorrow for sure and get back with you. Wanted to tell you too, I really like "new kind of me", did you right all of that? I wrote this on your soundcloud so you will see this there too, but it sounds really fun to play. Have u played this live with the new green? Does Dan still do drums for you and is that. Dan on the track? Lots of questions.
We definitely played this song live, it was one of my favorites. During the breakdown section we would have a trombone solo -run through some effects, that sounded really cool. I always liked Brians complimentary vocals on this song too, he's got a great voice. Dan is a professional musician though so he expects to get paid for shows, which is understandable as it's how he earns his living. Ben the key/trombonist is also a professional musician so when we played shows I essentially just split the door between the two of them. The shows were really fun, I miss it a lot.I never use a metronome.
-I also prefer not to use one but when I started playing with drummers in the studio it definitely caused some problems not using a metronome.Do you have one or some you would like (time Of snippet on Soundcloud)?
This is hard to answer because they're not labeled at all. I like the first snippet a lot and then the first one with vocals "turn around and..." plus a number of others.
Wanted to tell you too, I really like "new kind of me", did you right all of that?
-Thanks, I definitely did not do all of it. I wrote it and even wrote and came up with a lot of the arrangements but I didn't play the instruments and there are definitely things that Brian and Ben (keys trombone) came up with. Also, Dan was a big part of helping to shape the song. It was definitely a collaborative process.Does Dan still do drums for you and is that. Dan on the track?
-Yes that is Dan. As I live in NC, I don't really have a "band" anymore but I'm pretty sure that Dan and the rest of the gang would be down with playing if I were in MI. We had fun together.
Thanks for all the info back! As for the snippets, mabe just the time the snippet startswould work?
Okay, may be a bit before I can get to that. I have a big work week and so far I've not been able to take notes -hard to write down the time stamp while running. I will though, and I look forward to it. I look forward to hearing the song you come up with. Can't wait to get working on mine. I haven't recorded anything new in months, this is just what I needed. Thanks man.
Whenever is fine and if you don't get to picking through the song parts I'm just happy you liked some of them and maybe I can send you full versions in the future. I look forward to your song as well, kind of a cool way to approach a song. Steve, do you play those drums on some of your demos?
I play on some of the really crappy early demos like This one but anything that has been done in studio is Dan. You can clearly hear the difference. Dan's amazing, I'm a newbie. Dan actually gave me a few lessons to get me started but I've not played much lately. Just too busy during the day and then at night they're too loud. I do enjoy it quite a bit though.
I really like that song actually, has a cool feel and the drums sound great, especially for a demo. I wanted to ask you, what kind of work do u do, is it Hubski related? Sorry for all of the reply's back and forth, I know it is time consuming, I have to be honest though its just nice to conversate with someone who plays, it's been like 12 yrs of staying to myself with music, except for talking and sharing with Cathy, who is by far my biggest supporter.
I definitely work on Hubski a lot. Doesn't feel like work though.
Hey Steve, just checking in to see how the recording is going?
I started something last night but it really sucks. I think I may scrap it and start over. It was fun though. I had an idea a while back that I think I might try and tackle tomorrow night. How is it going for you?
OK, just trying to find the time and just trying to get in the mind frame of putting one part with another, have always came up with a part and then moved on. Did u get ahold of your friend Brian?
Yeah, he's out. I'll have something to show on Sunday night. It may be crap, but still it's the process that matters. Making music is fun.
So fun and either way Ill have something too, most likely with no vocal. Excited to hear your song, talk to you Sun.
