It must be that your brain starts loading associated memories for quick access. That suggests some sort of RAM, no?
Yeah, I'd say so. This isn't too surprising when you think about how your own memories are chunked together, how a song can make you recall in stunning detail that basement party in college or whatever. A good way to recall buried memories to start thinking of every detail surrounding a point in time, each detail brings more detail with it.
This research suggest a strong link between people and the memory set... again not surprising considering how much our brain reacts to other humans. Cool.

I did this exercise sometime back where I tried to remember everyone in my 3rd grade class. I was surprised how concentrating on certain people lead me to remember ones I had completely forgotten. I could almost feel old data being booted when I did that.
Another interesting possibility is that we have not only different potential storage, but that our RAM can vary, be enhanced, degrade with time, etc. No doubt future generations are going to have an educational experience that is much more informed by neuroscience. I want to know what a good RAM-building exercise is.
