Hubski: A few suggestions and ideas.
I guess it’s free to assume that the developers and administrators of this website are open to ideas so I’ve listed a few of them that I feel are good ideas for the future. Community members feel free to tweak upon my ideas or tell me how awful they are!
By the way, I’m only comparing certain things to Reddit that I feel are necessary, I understand that Hubski is not Reddit and shouldn't be fully compared to the website but as it currently stands I’d like to avoid certain problems that Reddit had and currently has if you don’t mind me doing so,
Hubski and image linking. At the moment I like how image linking isn't necessarily partook in the Hubski community. Most Reddit posts were only linked to an image and the only context about the image was in the title of the post, which left little room for discussion and more room for really bland and stupid jokes. I suggest that Hubski continues being more of a text based website, I've found more discussion about shit here than I have in Reddit in the last month, I’m really enjoying it.
Hubski Discussion. Hubski seems pretty open on discussions at the moment because there is no real way to negatively impact a post without writing a response to it. This makes people think and have to read what someone is saying and write a replay to prove points, this creates a good read and to me really diversifies opinions on certain subjects. Reddit’s upvote downvote system really ensures that users think the same way, the popular opinion gets upvoted and the unpopular opinion gets downvoted no matter how good of a point the post brings up or how constructive it is. It really destroys a good discussion and restricts people from being able to speak out against certain things. I feel that the way Hubski currently runs its content is good, there is only a way to positively affect comments and in all honesty I believe it should stay that way.
Hubski #Communities. (Last thing about Reddit I promise.) Reddit had default subreddits and that really ruined it. I feel that all communities (or hashtags whatever you want to call them) should be equal and show up in a feed like every other post. This allows for everyone to yet again get their opinions, content, and discussion out about something without having to go against a blockade of the defaulted masses. Along with this people should be able to delete/block a post from their feed if they don’t like it, so they don’t have to stare at it for twenty-four hours.
Hubski formatting. While you guys are busy and I understand this I feel that we should add a few more formatting such as subscripts, lists, and highlights so people can really point out key parts of their discussion. (and a tl;dr code that highlights it in blue would be pretty cool too.) Also a way to write in advanced text, it brings up a bigger text box with short cuts and easy access to ways to format your thread.
Thank you for taking the time to read my ideas and suggestions and I hope they are in par with what your ideas for the community are!
Hey Cortez, thanks for taking the time to write up these suggestions. 1. Hubski and image linking. -We were concerned about images when we implemented it but decided that because you are encouraged to follow "people" more than "topics" on Hubski, it wouldn't really matter. If you post a bunch of annoying images, I just won't follow you. In fact, I'll likely "ignore" you and won't be exposed to them. That said, so far images have been used to display original work or to add a dimension to an original post or in some fun communal ways. 2. Hubski Discussion. -Thanks, glad you like the way it's set up. From the outset, mk had no down vote and I don't think we ever will. 3. Hubski #Communities. -Just want to point out that you can "ignore" a person that posts content you don't like. That said, I do like the idea of being able to quickly remove/dismiss a post from your feed. mk what do you think? 4. Hubski formatting. -Thanks for the suggestions here. Cortez, let me know what you think after using the site for a couple of weeks, I am interested to know if some of your thoughts change after using the site for a bit. Also, I'm interested to know if you have any other suggestions. Feel free to PM me. Thanks again for taking the time.
Thank you for taking the time to read over this I appreciate it. I'll definitely give you my feed back after a few more weeks, I'm liking it here so far. Can't wait to see how far this really goes its a great website to my experience. I didn't know about the ignore button, and I forgot about following, I guess those are some key features that'll ultimately give you the content you're interested in and tone out certain things you don't give much of a concern about. The way this website functions as a whole is pretty unique.
Cool, I look forward to seeing you around Cortez.
May I point out the fact that I can't help but be a bit overwhelmed by the notion of following people as opposed to topics? Thing is, people may have a lot of different interests, some of which may align with mine while others may not. Also there's a whole lot more people out there than there are topics, so following only a specific set of users may be very limiting, while following every person whose comment you found relevant or interesting can become a real mess and be very overwhelming. I think the hashtag system should be expanded on - sort of like subreddits, but dynamic, meaning there's no particular "section" reserved for them, people just tag them whenever they make posts, as they do now, but this allows for an easier organization of your interests and feeds.
That seems to be the way tags already work. How do you think they should be expanded?sort of like subreddits, but dynamic, meaning there's no particular "section" reserved for them, people just tag them whenever they make posts, as they do now, but this allows for an easier organization of your interests and feeds.
Yeah woops, I did pretty much describe them. What I meant is that they could be a bit more emphasized, as opposed to emphasizing the following users thing so much. But maybe I'm wrong, I haven't been here long enough to really say, but theoretically it sounds like it would be easier.
Hey, thanks for the feedback I appreciate it. What I would suggest is following a few tags to begin with. Once you notice certain users that post content you enjoy, follow them. Eventually, you're feed will be comprised more of people you follow thank tags. In my opinion, aggregation can function similarly to actual relationships. I may meet someone at a concert for a band I love, and become good friends with them. Overtime this friendship will revolve around more than just that one band, and perhaps more than just music. I think Hubski can work this way too. But if you're interested in a more focused experience, perhaps just following tags is the way to go. Hope this helps.
I think that's a great idea, thanks for the analogy you made! I'll give it all a shot, either way I'm happy with the site so far!
The image linking shouldn't be a problem since you are unable to obtain link karma.
Well, sort of. Your hubwheel does fill up slowly. Actually there used to be a "clout" system where you gained clout both by voting on other people's posts and by having others vote on your own. The amount of "karma" you had determined how many votes you could make - for example, if you had seven karma, you could only vote up seven posts or comments in one day. Karma was itself tied to clout, so the more clout you had, the more karma you got every day. I believe mk made it semi-invisible and introduced the hubwheel to dissuade the devotion to karma-whoring that one sees on Reddit. So there's a wee Hubski history lesson! Oh, and you earn a badge every time your hubwheel is completed, which you can then award to a special post, and it'll appear forevermore in the badges page.
I have a question, if anyone is still in this thread: Why is my hub empty even though I've posted comments? Does it only show your posted threads? If so, I'd like to suggest the hub display comments as well.
