I knock on wood. Probably once a day, at least. I have twice today. I know it makes no rational sense, but I’m too afraid not to. Why? No idea. I’m just superstitious.
I was a big white lighter narc in college. Get those away from me fam. Semi related - I have experienced exactly zero cannabis related paranoia/anxiety since the end of prohibition in the mitten. Turns out that cannabis doesn't make you paranoid, threat of militarized police ruining your life over archaic nonsense does.
Got it. That would be akin to jinxing the mission by celebrating it too soon. Makes sense to me.
Not greeting people over doorsteps and not turning back on your way from home. First is so ingrained in Poland, I thought it's good manners until someone mentioned it. The second is allegedly about bringing bad luck home with you, but IMO it's just common sense/punishing absent-mindedness away. Regardless of motivation, I consciously avoid doing either.
So you are not supposed to greet someone over a doorstep? How else do you do it?
greet = shake hands, sorry, to me it's practically a synonym. Doesn't matter if you go out to greet them or wait until they're in, just don't do it over the doorstep. No idea about the genesis of it as bad luck superstition, but it was either a fashionable influence from the outside that made more sense in context of parent culture or one of those old-Polish customs that Mikołaj Rej would think archaic. 50:50 with those things.
Exactly no superstitions but I'm dipping into emoticons 💁♂️
That's good, it's bad luck to be superstitious. I learned that In middle school,,🤪🥴
Knocking on wood seems useful to me. I often see it as a way of reflecting withgratitude on something positive in my life. I might mention to my wife,” Knock on wood, but tomorrow’s weather is predicted to be nice so I can get out and run a few miles. Knocking o wood is recognizing things are pretty good and there are no guarantees they’ll stay that way. I’ve no good reason to change it and don’t expect to do so.
I see it the same way. I even knock louder and more forcefully given how grateful I am. For example when talking to my wife I might say regarding our son, “he seems to be behaving well in school this year and his grades are up.” -hard knock. Always two knocks too. Never just one. Hope y’all get some good weather up there in Michigan, katakowsj. I’ll knock wood for that. Onward!
You do NOT step on the foul line of a baseball field when you go on or off of the field. Just don't do it.
Baseball could do without the Superstitions. They can e so odd and nonsensical. It alienates the younger generation that look for ways to engage in the game. what’s your view on pitch clocks? My son had waaaay too many super-late little league games that had to be ended arbitrarily due to darkness, and player safety, that I expect pitch clocks will eventually become accepted and possibly save a game that cannot meet the needs of folks that keep a schedule.
I am 100% pro pitch clocks. There’s way too much screwing around in baseball and no reason for games to be as long as they are.
