I've been into some chill, slower indie stuff recently: I've also been trying to force myself to cheer up with some more upbeat tunes: And finally, some weird fuckin' glam 80's shit that's probably in 500,000 lofi remixes: Basically, I want someone to look at my 'Most Listened' on Spotify and assume that I eat cigarettes for snacks
So apparently Pigface is now called The Joy Thieves. The Joy Thieves have always enjoyed an ever-changing lineup, and this time is no exception. New to the party this time around are drummer Paul Ferguson (Killing Joke, Warrior Soul), guitarist Chris Haskett (The Rollins Band, David Bowie, Iggy Pop), guitarist John Haggerty (Naked Raygun, Pegboy), drummer Joe Haggerty (The Effigies, Pegboy), songwriter Scott-David Allen (The Burying Kind, A Covenant of Thorns), and Grant Sutton(Jumpsuit, Monster Trux, The Party Downers). With ‘American Parasite’ The Thieves have departed from their standard modus operandi of having a different vocalist front every track; the new album finds the mighty Chris Connelly (Ministry, Murder Inc., FiniTribe, The Damage Manual, RevCo) fronting every track. This time around the songs are also harder, faster and angrier, with Connelly describing the album as; "...Everything I wished I could have done with Ministry... It's like being hosed down with lava..."
MC 900 Ft Jesus - The City Sleeps Starts off with a smooth, chill beat and when the lyrics kick in, takes a sharp left turn. Watched a few live performances on youtube and love the variety. Only found 3 albums though and still checking them out.
You are in for a treat, my friend. There's a whole story to his career, and how he got screwed, and why he left the industry. But the music he created on those three albums is really something special. I got to see him live in San Francisco back when he was touring for his first album "Hell With The Lid Off" and had just started playing some stuff from his new album, "Welcome to my Dream". Just him and DJ Zero on the stage, weaving these stories and melodies... Tone Loc had just come out with "Funky Cold Medina". Public Enemy was telling everyone to "Fight the Power". Primus was "Sailing the Seas of Cheese". And Rage Against The Machine hadn't released an album yet. It was one hell of a time for music...
Longtime fan, first-time caller. I had Hell With The Lid Off on TAPE Had the opportunity to mix Cottonmouth, TX at one point in the '90s. Even rented them some gear because they didn't travel with a lot of backline. They were setting up and I said You guys sound a lot like MC 900 Ft Jesus and the keyboardist said ...we ARE MC 900 Ft. Jesus. We just swap out frontmen. As far as I'm concerned, MC900Ft Jesus/Cottomouth, TX are the only worthwhile bands to come out of Dallas and yes I know what a horrible insult that is to Horton Heat, fight me.
This week it has been Lynyrd Skynyrd's "One More For/From The Road" live album. There may never have been a more perfect recorded concert than this one. (Although I will say that Modern Jazz Quartet's "The Complete Last Concert" has got to be right up there with the finest recordings ever made.)
I mean there are some incredible whole concerts out there. Queen at Wembley. The Band's The Last Waltz, Allman Bros. Live at Fillmore 1969. One More From the Road is legendary, but damn there are a lot to pick from. That rendition of Tuesday's Gone will always be the best though.
