Link to an NPR article ranking the summer activities that are low to high risk. Where do you stand on this? What will/won’t you be doing?
cross-country road trip babyyy the traffic was a tad better than usual, but if otherwise unaware i would not have drawn the conclusion that something was rotten in the state of america. nice time for a cannonball run record, i guess
Yesterday was my sister's 50th birthday. So we had a party. There's a food truck we love, who allows you to order online, and schedule a pickup time at any of the locations it stops at. So she had everyone order food from the truck in 5 minute increments, and the truck parked next to a big open field. Everyone came separately, and sat separately, on their own picnic blankets, chairs, and whatevers. Every 5 minutes or so, another order would be called out from the food truck, and the person would go up and pick up their pre-paid food. The food truck workers never touched anything from the customer, and the customer touched nothing other than the bag the food was inside. People brought the food back to wherever they were sitting, and we all talked and chatted across this pleasant little field, in the sunshine, with fresh food. There was a lot of laughing. A lot of saying "What?" because it's hard to hear someone 20 feet away in a mask. And we all sang Happy Birthday. As far as I can tell, nobody touched a single thing anybody else touched. Nobody got close enough to each other to spread anything. And everybody wore masks. A couple of older people even wore face shields. For almost every one of us, it was the first time in close to 3 months we have "socialized" at all. And it worked. I'm pretty happy with how the whole thing went. Definitely a memorable 50th for my sister!
Nope. We're not especially social anyway, and I think it's premature.
Nah. Unless you count porch pickups and drop offs of homemade stuff as socializing. We're all young, connected digitally, many of my friends work in healthcare and we are all actively trying to limit the spread of disease. The older generations give no fucks and are planning on being back in church this Sunday, no masks. I'm gonna skip the funerals too.
We're doing less because our clients are doing more. The "fuck your mask libtard" contingent is getting substantially more vocal. I went to pick up some stuff from a friend's house Friday; they were very much in the "vaccines alter your DNA" camp. I took my mask off because his wife was staring daggers at me. My daughter frolicked in the back yard with her mask on for an hour. My wife is hopeful that our daughter will get to do a couple weeks of summer camp this year. If I recall correctly we need to be down to 19 deaths in a two week period, then we get to wait a week, hope it goes down to 9, wait another two weeks, and then she can hang out in the woods with seven other kids not in her household. We're at 39.
Getting a mask that fits me well is hard getting one for my 3 year old is next to impossible. They consistently fall off, are bulky and I’m unclear if they do anything. Mask design is sorely lacking right now we need to make lighter weight masks since they don’t offer the user any protection anyway and are really just there to reduce the range we project our particulate matter.
These come in three sizes. Of course that doesn't help if you don't have a 3D printer, and if your 3D printer is a tiny little Anycubic Photon the whole "prints without supports" is a lie because you need to turn the thing upside down and suspend it in space. My wife sews. She's probably made 40 masks for the birth center.
I’m not really looking for a mask to protect me, it’s impractical to wear those except in high risk areas like airports. I still have a few fuck you Im protecting myself and not you 3m masks for those situations. Looking for more of a face covering to decrease any potential germ dispersal and to signal to my liberal cohort that I respect them enough to wear a mask when I spend time with them. I see it more akin to wearing pants than safety glasses or a helmet in those situations.
We've been easing things up pretty rapidly in NZ. I've been to a couple of small gatherings, had people over and so on. The gym is probably the most packed placed I frequent and people (for the most part) are considerate about distance. Each day with no cases here seems to encourage more activity, which I understand but I do appreciate nobody wants to see the hard work undone. The socializing has been limited for sure, but it has increased in frequency the last week or so. Tomorrow I see my parents for the first time since February! Looking forward to that.
The question remains does the virus transmit through fecal mater. If so then a lot of these low risk activities become very high risk. Gonna wait for some people to go out camping and see if anyone gets infected through use of a shared outhouse. If not then looks like lots of camping this year.
i hope you're not serious cholera is transmitted through fecal matter and no one gets cholera by using a public toilet. public toilets have been designed to avoid spreading fecal-bourne illnesses. increasingly, research is pointing to the idea that it's very difficult to catch COVID 19 through surface contamination (presumably whether fecal-bourne or not) from the CDCThe virus that causes COVID-19 has been found in the feces of some patients diagnosed with COVID-19. However, it is unclear whether the virus found in feces may be capable of causing COVID-19. There has not been any confirmed report of the virus spreading from feces to a person. Scientists also do not know how much risk there is that the virus could be spread from the feces of an infected person to another person. However, they think this risk is low based on data from previous outbreaks of diseases caused by related coronaviruses, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).
Dunno about transmission, but it's apparently unparalleled for prediction
I won’t suddenly start going to church, I’ll tell you that much! Already have started having 1-3 other people overs for small cookouts in my backyard, not much indoor socializing. Have started hiking and rock climbing, and will start mountaineering this upcoming weekend. All “low” to “medium” risk activities per this article. There’s a couple of bars with great outdoor patios I would love to support but they’re not open right now. Will be a tough decision on those, especially the 85+ year old bar right around the corner from my house.
