oyster  ·  2253 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The 17 Most Striking Moments From the Kavanaugh Hearing

Mitchell: What do you consider to be too many beers?

Kavanaugh: I don't know. You know, we—whatever the chart says, blood-alcohol chart.

A grown ass man doesn’t know how many beers he can handle but wants us to believe he’s never had too many and blacked out ? Mmmmmmkay, he’s not even trying.

Watching a woman recount sexual trauma was a bad idea to start the day so I missed most of Kavanaugh's testimony but they were joking on Twitter about him crying over loving his beer. I don't know how true that is and I don't care because what little I saw from him proved he's an asshole

Cumol  ·  2252 days ago  ·  link  ·

He mentioned the word "beer" 9 times in one answer.

Yes, we drank beer. My friends and I, the boys and girls, Yes, we drank beer. I liked beer. We drank beer. The drinking age, as I noted, was 18 so the seniors were legal, senior year in high school people were legal to drink, and, yeah, we drank beer and I said sometimes—sometimes probably had too many beers and sometimes other people had team beers. We drink beer. We liked beer.

Look, let me preface this by saying that I believe her. That said, I’ll play devils advocate here and say that I don’t think Kavanaough came across as an asshole. I think he came across as someone that is very upset for being, as he sees it, falsely accused of a heinous act. Let’s say he didn’t do it. Can you imagine what the conversations with his daughters is like? His wife? His parents? The times he cried, had nothing to do with beer and everything to do with mentioning one of those people. Mentioning being a coach, a teacher. This is when he cried. Anyone who says otherwise and actually watched it is a liar.

This is an incredibly, incredibly sad situation. If she is lying, a man’s life is irreparably ruined. If she is telling the truth, a woman was visciously attacked by someone that is likely to be a Supreme Court judge.

No matter what, this all sucks. There’s no need to make snide “he cried over beer,” comments.

These are real people. Both of them. It’s very sad.

Again, I think she’s telling the truth and I even think that it’s likely he is knowingly lying. But his tears were real and had to do with the pain his actions are having on his family and people he cares about. Not beer.

What strikes me and what I’ve seen from other people is the double standards. Hillary Clinton was questioned for 11 hours and didn’t cry. She remained poised because she knew she would be the hysterical woman otherwise. Even if we’re saying it’s possible she mistook somebody else for Kavanaugh, Dr. Ford remained poised throughout discussing her past trauma because as a woman she had too.

I don’t disagree with you, I just think he came across as somebody who’s never had to worry about how he’s coming across in his life. This was a job interview for fucks sake, the crying wasn’t his only major blunder in my opinion. He acted combative and refused to give straight answers through out. I guarantee she was coached to be likeable by her lawyers before going on. He clearly wasn’t but considering law is his field he would have known if it was actually required of him.

I see women paying so much careful attention to this everyday during the most minuscule activities and this guy got up there being rude to everybody. We can act like men aren’t allowed to show emotion but in the business world it’s the complete opposite. Another example of that is Elon Musk’s meltdown, a female CEO doing that would just be proof women couldn’t handle it. For those reasons I’m too angry at the world to give a shit about how sad he is that he’s hurting his family.

thenewgreen  ·  2251 days ago  ·  link  ·

These are valid points. There is definitely a double standard. To me he came across as a guy trying to defend his family. He was very angry. Had HRC defended her family similarly, she would have been considered “unhinged,” at best. I thought Dr. Ford was awesome. Took a lot of courage to do what she did. I imagine that this moment had already defined much of her internal life, now it will certainly define her external life too. That’s a hell of a burden. She’s remarkable.

It’s easy to forget that this is a job interview. It’s clear he didn’t pass. Can’t we find a better candidate?

It would mean the world to me if we could.

By no fault of your own, you have no idea how much this vote means to women across this world. It’s just, when people don’t understand why a woman acted the way she did it makes me believe her more. Why do they have such a hard time understanding something I see so clearly ? Every since metoo I’ve seen women act in the same way I did and men/women not understand why. They didn’t go through it so they don’t understand but I do and so do many women/ men. I have shed tears over how this vote could go. I have been optimistic and I’ve been pessimistic. I’m choosing to believe things will change for the better because I know if this happened during bush nobody would have come forward.

When I joined his website nobody talked about this stuff, I know because it’s why I joined. It was an escape. Now I don’t need an escape and I see an amazing group of men who are open to hearing the other side. This is an incredible group of people. That’s enough for me right now. Thanks for that.

About that double standard for Hilary: she wasn't emotional and that's a problem too. She was paraphrased on the radio today saying what a narrow spectrum she can operate within. It's either hysterical or cold ice bitch with a narrow little path between to not be Criticized for your tone or emotions

tacocat  ·  2252 days ago  ·  link  ·

Sucks to be Bill Cosby's wife but the feelings of that man's family are far from relevant in discussions of his crimes. Ditto for Kavanaugh except he's just failing a job interview and he acts like this job is a birthright

thenewgreen  ·  2251 days ago  ·  link  ·

Bill Cosby’s wife has had a decade to piece together her own facts etc. Kavanaugh’s is likely being blindsided by this. They’ve been through these confirmations before and this never happened. I imagine she’s in a very dark place right now.

You’re right, it’s a job interview and he definitely failed it. No doubt about it. I’ll be interested to see what, if anything, new is brought to light in the FBI investigation? Apparently FBI investigations aren’t worth anything though.

tacocat  ·  2251 days ago  ·  link  ·

You're assuming his wife doesn't know anything because no public accusations were made before. Kavanaugh seems to have or had a troubled relationship with alcohol. We don't know his personal history like we do Cosby's.

thenewgreen  ·  2251 days ago  ·  link  ·

Kavanaugh seems to have or had a troubled relationship with alcohol.
he does? Seems like a social drinker. But you’re absolutely right in that we can only assume one way or the other regarding what his wife knew/felt prior to all this. There are only two people that ever really know a marriage.
tacocat  ·  2251 days ago  ·  link  ·

The part I quoted sounds like someone who feels guilty about his drinking becoming defensive when confronted. You don't have to be a stereotypical stumble-bum every day drinker to have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. I'm pretty much the standard drunk that people think about when they hear that word. My ex girlfriend did not drink every day but every time she did it was a nightmare. In some ways that's worse. I can't deny my problem the way she can. Also I'm not violent and can hold my booze like a champ

Or it could be he's just defensive because he's unjustly accused but his little calendar and Mark Judge's book make me fairly certain he's had a history of problem drinking

And you know what, if you think she's telling the truth, and you think he's knowingly lying, then I DON'T CARE ABOUT HIS PAIN AND EFFECTS ON HIS FAMILY. He has, if this is true, caused long-term damage to a woman (probably more than one) - and his succession to the court, if it happens, and if this is true, speaks volumes on our societies valuation of women as a whole. He can, and should, suffer. There are ways to act, and his methods are those of a sociopath and that's me being generous.

thenewgreen  ·  2252 days ago  ·  link  ·

I DON'T CARE ABOUT HIS PAIN AND EFFECTS ON HIS FAMILY
I do. Why? Cause his family had nothing to do with this and I'm not a sociopath.

My point is that this is all VERY sad and should be treated as such, not as some spectator, let's see who can come up with the best meme/joke event. He didn't cry about beer. This sucks. On so many levels.

ButterflyEffect  ·  2252 days ago  ·  link  ·

Because none of this needed to happen. If he did what is claimed, don't lie about it, and even better, don't assault a woman in the first place. That's why.

thenewgreen  ·  2252 days ago  ·  link  ·

To be clear, I don't care about Kavanaugh's pain. But I feel heartbroken for his family. His kids are forever the children of Brett Kavenaugh. That's a scarlet letter. You are right though, it didn't have to happen. While I am sure he will forever point the finger to the left, he should point the finger at himself. His family are also victims of his.

On a separate note. I find it very hard to believe that someone with this much animosity towards the democrats could ever be an impartial judge. Even if some exonerating evidence was presented showing that someone else was the assailant, he would be unfit for the position based on his behavior yesterday.

I think the point I was poorly making in my original comment is that I am not a fan of the social media circus surrounding this. This is such a shitty event that it doesn't require bombast.

Ah, I'm sorry, I did not get that out of your original comment, hence my response. I agree with you on the kids, they are collateral damage in a man's pursuit of...whatever it is he's ultimately after. Power, I guess.

thenewgreen  ·  2252 days ago  ·  link  ·

His wife is collateral damage too. It's very likely that she has no idea that he was (may still be) a sexual predator. Did you see the look on her face at the hearing? Wow.
