From the Atlantic, that's okay still?
Our immigration policy (and those who are responsible for enforcing it) is a joke, except that its not funny, because the joke's on good, honest people who have a lot to contribute to our society. True story: my good friend is visiting her native Greece right now after living in Detroit for the last year or so. She has been hired to start a neurology residency beginning in about two weeks. Her email account got corrupted, so she can't access it, and therefore can't sign the final papers for her visa extension. One would think that you could call up ICE or Homeland Security or the Embassy or any number of places and say "Hey, could you forward those docs to this other email, because there is a problem with the one I gave you?" Nope. They're basically telling her to go fuck herself; she's been told she likely can't reenter the US (even though she lives here, and her stuff is all here). That's our beautiful bureaucracy in action (inaction, if you will).

In the political spectrum, is there any one party that is more or less to blame for this? Seems to me that bureaucracy is a cancer that left unchecked, grows and grows. But I'm not certain which party is at fault or which party is proposing a solution? Anyone have more insight in to this aspect?

I don't know either. Xenophobia is a time honored tradition among all sects of society. Its easy to blame everything on the GOP today, but clearly immigration policy has been a problem for a long time, including when Democrats held Congress and the White House.

Yeah, I guess I'm less interested in blame and more interested in solutions. I'm going to be paying closer attention to proposed policy this election than ever before. I'm interested to see what I find.
Good luck to her, this sounds like a horrible situation. She needs to get the press involved, that's the only way anything will change. Honestly, she should reach out to Obama/Romney campaigns and let them use her as an example of how broken the system is. That would seriously speed up the process for her.

Detroit needs to have a "buy a home and live in it for 5 years --get a green card" policy. Let's get that going.

I guarantee you that there will be a very big Chinese community there in no time.

"Give us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses longing to be free..." Need not apply.
