I have to say, there's not really anything on my radar this moment. I'm more than open to suggestions.
From my to watch list, I think all of these are 2016 Kubo and the Two Strings - Like the aimation a lot, looks pretty good IP Man 3 - Love this series Triple 9 - Kate Winslet, Woody Harrelson? Yes pls Whiskey Tango Foxtrot - New Tina Fey, looks pretty good My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 - This is my life Warcraft - Played this game for too long not to see the move BFG - I adore this book and maybe Keanu because Key and Peele
Kung Fu Panda 3, I admit I'm kind of excited for. Hail, Caesar! Deadpool Eye in the Sky looks like it has potential Batman v Superman Captain America: Civil War The BFG The Legend of Tarzan Ghostbusters Suicide Squad Sully The Magnificent Seven Gambit admittedly worried about the rumored casting on this, never been a huge Channing Tatum fan Doctor Strange Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, admittedly I'm probably most excited about this as a huge Harry Potter/J K Rowling fan
Thanks! I think there was talk to have the new Ghostbusters movie be separate from the originals but take place in the same universe. But I think it's now just a straight up reboot so they can start a new universe fresh for more movies and a television show, but most of this is speculations.
Reboots are particularly prominent in the last, say, five years, aren't they? Then it occurred to me that cinema wasn't around for this long, either, and it got pop-ized (for lack of a better world) only very recently. Still: there aren't as many new titles as there are various continuations, are there?
It's funny though, books have been around for a LONG time and you don't see any "reboots" of Huck finn come out? But there are variations on things like the Odyssey etc. I guess..
That's true, which makes one wonder. It's not like writing a book in your own literary voice is any more difficult than making a movie (just look at the number of people involved). Maybe it's because books are somehow sacred, a "work of art" as opposed to movies being a "pop thing"? Videogames are still considered child's play, even though there have been plenty of games to inspire emotional engagement with virtual characters (much like what cinema or books do); you'll know exactly what I mean if you've ever played The Last of Us (I haven't, but I've seen Markiplier play all the way through, and my heart stopped quite some times because of the events). Maybe the cinema hasn't yet "proven" itself and is therefore considered a toy rather than a real tool of art. And what about Odyssey? Has someone rewritten it?books have been around for a LONG time and you don't see any "reboots" of Huck finn come out?
I think what thenewgreen is referring to are different translations, abridged versions, etc. When it comes to works that are translated or retold, various authors have benefits over others. For example, you could have two different authors translating the same epic poem. One author might produce a translation that is seen as more poetic and easier to read while the other author might produce a translation that is more literal. Both are arguably true to the spirit of the original works, but both have different strengths and weaknesses. Since we're talking about rewriting works, you might want to check out the graphic novel The Infinite Horizon is a sci-fi retelling of The Odyssey, and a semi-decent one at that, that shows how you can take another's work and tweak it. Another great example would be Wicked, which is a series that retells The Wizard of Oz from a different perspective. And what about Odyssey? Has someone rewritten it?
The Coen brothers' movie "O Brother Where Art Thou?" is a retelling of Homer's "Odyssey" which concentrates on the comedy elements present in the original - basically, Odysseus is a massive egotist who thinks he's far smarter than he really is, constantly tells unnecessarily elaborate lies, and only appears to be clever because everyone around him is clinically thick - set in America in the 1920s. George Clooney is perfectly cast as a half-smart fool who never has the slightest doubt that he's the cleverest person in the room, even if that room is collapsing around him and it's his fault. It's also a really good film. See also James Joyce's Nobel prize-winning novel "Ulysses", in which all the major events in Homer's epic tale are mirrored by the totally unimportant things that happen over one day in the life of a Jewish shopkeeper living in Dublin in 1901. Oh, by the way, the movie "Forbidden Planet" is a loose remake of a play called "The Tempest" by some guy called William Shakespeare....
Wow. That looks intense. While I didn't know they were re-making this, I'm glad to see that they're giving writing credits to Kurosawa and Hashimoto. Confession time. I'm a fan of westerns. I love them. I've never actually seen The Magnificent Seven. On the other hand, I have seen Seven Samurai quite a few times and love that film to pieces. I think it might even be on Hulu . . .Eye in the Sky
The Magnificent Seven
I have never been impressed with a performance by him, and have often thought he just plain sucked. A lot of the movies he's been in I also disliked: 21 Jump Street, Dear John, She's the Man, Magic Mike. His cameo in The End of the World was funny, but would have been just a funny with any other actor. The only film I remember liking with him in a big role was Foxcatcher, but it wasn't his performance that I liked, I'm a big fan of both Carell and Ruffalo. I admit I haven't seen Hateful 8 yet and I'm excited for Hail, Caesar! but I don't know how big of a role he plays in those films.
Deadpool looks like it will be some fun. I have never read a Deadpool comic, so I know little about the character, but even so I am excited to see what is in store. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The more I think about this movie, the more excited I am. Given the quality of Man of Steel, I think this movie may disappoint me, but I really hope it exceeds my expectations. Captain America: Civil War I hope this one is more like Captain America: The First Avenger than it is like Captain America: The Winter Soldier. X-Men: Apocalypse I've been enjoying the new X-Men movies. I hope this one continues the trend of good movies. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story I am interested, but it is really only because it is another Star Wars film. And finally, Suicide Squad. I will watch this one, but I think I may maintain low expectations for it.
Dude, you and PlaceboEffect are on very similar wavelengths when it comes to movies. If you start a thread on any of those, give a shout out to him. He'd probably love to talk about them.
Lol I was totally on board until he said he liked Cap 1 more than Cap 2. He and I need to step out the side door and trade blows until we both realize we just love Cap in everything and become lifelong bros.
Fite me irl m8. Winter Soldier was better than Avengers 2, Iron Man 1&2, Cap 1, and all of the Thor Movies. How can you not love it? They finally started making Cap what he was supposed to be from the start. More showcasing of combat ability and technique, more speeches, and less propoganda poster boy scenes. Cap's best fights are all from that movie, and so are most of his best quotes.
I'm looking forward to The Witch, and Moana. Those are probably the two major ones. Honestly though 2016 is looking pretty bright got a metric ton of superhero movies, and this gem: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
The Revenant (Technically a 2015 movie, but Australia doesn't get it until the 7th of Jan... So I'm claiming it). I've loved everything else that González Iñárritu has directed, so I have high hopes for this film. A Perfect Day looks really good too.
I'm a mild fan of Benicio Del Toro, first coming across him in The Way of the Gun (which is a great modern western/crime film) and while I haven't seen a lot of his movies, the ones I have seen I've never thought he's done a poor job. With the exception of The Shawshank Redemption, I haven't seen any Tim Robbins on the other hand. That said, his character in the trailer came across as a charming, fun guy. I'm definitely interested in this film.
Oh man! I just watched the trailer for The Way of the Gun. I'm pretty sure I've seen it before. Or at least the standoff at the end. Might have to revisit it! For the most part Del Toro's a pretty good actor. Just stay away from The Wolfman. Such a bad movie.
If you do end up seeing it again, I'd love to hear your opinion about it. I will admit it's not a perfect film, but the things about it that are good are really good. Also, if you're a fan of gunplay and aren't shy about foreign films, I can't recommend John Woo's Hardboiled enough. Gripping film all around with great gunplay.
I think you'll be starting off the new year right. Both movies are an absolute treat. Let me know what you think of Hardboiled too, because that's a movie I treasure. In fact, I think I'm going to watch it again this weekend. It's been a few years since I last saw it.
On my automatically get and probably watch list for 2016 so far: - The Legend of Tarzan - Zootopia trailer looked funny - Batman vs Superman - Star Wars Rogue One - Hateful Eight - Suicide Squad - Deadpool - The new Ghostbusters - The Revenant - Finding Dory - The Jungle Book - Lion sounded interesting - Various Marvel / DC things that come out - On my list is also How To Train Your Dragon 3, which is apparently now 2018 instead of 16 :( Incredibles 2 is even 2019 now... I haven't looked thoroughly for anything major.. it's just what I collected in a list while I thought of them Edit: Forgot "Hail, Caesar!" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" since the trailer looked promising
