Mine is probably Blast From The Past a silly romantic comedy that was on TBS every Sunday for years and the tv would be on so it would be running in the background for whatever I was doing. Brendan Fraser, Alicia Silverstone, Christopher Walken, Sissy Spacek, Dave Foley, Joey Slotnick. Nathan Fillion. etc. A nicely structured entertaining movie but a 5/10 for me.
Of the movies I have intentionally watched, I would think that my most watched would either be Citizen Kane or Run Lola Run.
Although I have may have seen La Jetée more than that but I am not sure that counts as it is a short.
I stopped counting how many times I had watched Star Wars: A New Hope after 277. A large number of those viewings were during the 5th grade... when I was absent 29 times... That was the year I figured out that with two working parents, I could just sit at home and watch movies all day.
Not one movie, but the Star Wars trilogy. They're some of the first movies I remember watching as a child. My dad rented the laser discs from Blockbuster, and I'll never forget the covers. Blue Star Wars with Vader on the cover, purple Empire with a storm trooper, and red Jedi with Yoda. Those huge discs will always be the definitive editions for the movies to me. Later, my dad took me to see the new special edition of Star Wars at the old theater uptown. Watching the attack on the death star on the big screen was awesome as a 5 or 6 year old. It's still my favorite of Lucas' "enhanced" scenes. Those films instilled in me a love for epic stories and trilogies following a hero's journey. LOTR and TDK trilogy would scratch those itches later. But I always managed to keep watching the trilogy throughout the years, and now it's become tradition to watch it at least once a year. Hell, I might have to watch it soon now. Of course, they're pretty much played out for me now so I could end up catching up with to them with 8 1/2, since its my favorite classic, and The Tree of Life, as it's my favorite. I've also watched Fury Road about 5 times. That caught me off guard, actually. I just keep finding myself perfectly in the mood for the stunts and action.
My sister and I were latchkey kids. In New Mexico, in the '80s, when your afternoon choices were GI Joe, My Little Pony, Facts of Life and MASH. And we had a VCR but the only tapes we owned were the ones my parents liked. And the five blanks that we used to tape movies, but only when we got some free preview or other, which was always The Disney Channel. Except two of those were reserved for movies my mom insisted we have copies of, one was mine one was my sister's and one was in play. So when you've had enough GI Joe, enough My Little Pony, enough Facts of Life (with George Clooney!) and enough MASH, you cued up a movie. Thus, regardless of any wants needs or efforts of my adult life, there's no possible way that I will ever watch anything as much as I have seen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Or Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Or Mary Poppins Or Tron, which because our cable company sucked, was without audio for all of Reel 4. Pretty much from the minute they get on the lightship until Sark gets de-rezzed, we had no audio. Because the one I had on my tape? I didn't hardly get to watch it, until everyone had gone to bed or I knew there was no way they'd ever know I had it. So I had to basically hide it. 2:33, bitchez. Worth noting? My daughter is a big fan of Ponyo so check back in a year or two.
Chinatown !! (ignore the poster on imdb, I haven't seen it before and it throws me off) I only came to it a few years ago. But the atmosphere and the beauty of every scene. And Jack Nicholson just embodies it all. I may have watched the Matrix a few more times when I was young, but this movie is perfect, every scene tells a story.
"Forget it Jake. It's Chinatown." Absolutely great flick. The Two Jakes follow up not so much IMO.
Funny I just heard of The two jakes the other day. Looks like the worst parts of 90's hollywood rolled into a movie..plus Jack Nich having a midlife crisis and trying to prove he's still got it. I don't know if I even want to risk tainting the first one, although apparently siskel and ebert both loved it.
Whenever I'm feeling particularly down I'll put on Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb So many classic moments. I laugh at something new every time.
Have seen that many, many times but not in a few years. I better start a list of movies to rewatch.
Thanks. I missed that. I wonder why I am muted there. :( I am a noob and have no idea what I did wrong to earn that. Oh well.
Yeah you are most likely right. I honestly hang my head in shame about listed posts three and four. Bad form no doubt. That post bothered me and I was in a testy mood that evening but that is no excuse. There is no excuse.
Cedar is correct. It is because of comments in that thread. If I remember correctly that was one of the first times I encountered you here on Hubski. I'm sorry if it was a bad day for you, but It's nice to hear some humility about it. I'm okay with un-muting you, but at the time I saw someone I never wanted to comment on my posts. For the record, I don't currently plan on Blocking anyone ever, PM's are welcome, even from the few users I've muted.
Sorry about that and thank you for letting me know.
No worries, I filtered you because of it but if anything that's made your posts/comments stand out more and whenever I've seen your name I've stopped and read what you've said and it's not stopped me from re-sharing them when I have thought them valuable contributions. I think the problem with muting and blocking is it leaves little recourse to make up, and in this instance I would say that it was far too strong a measure as those comments seemed to be made out of character and, as you said, in a testy mood. Edit: You're unfiltered now friend :)
I'm glad it worked out between you two in this thread. I've also had a fair amount of success PMing the person who has muted me in the past. Filter might be a little different... mk and team, is there a way to know when you're filtered? "You are filtered here" or something? Probably more trouble than it's worth. Just a thought.I think the problem with muting and blocking is it leaves little recourse to make up
Since filtering doesn't affect the filtered person's use of the site, I don't think it is necessary. Filtering can be used for benign reasons, and I think displaying it would change that. Hush is similar. As mute (and block) does affect a person's interactions. I think it is best to make it clear.
Thank you. I really do appreciate the kindness and feedback.
I've watched Midnight in Paris about 30 times in the last few years. I'd never seen a Woody Allen movie and my then girlfriend was absolutely appalled... So I was forced to watch it. Something I am now absolutely thrilled about. I've show it to everyone in my family... Sometimes more than once and I think they're all getting a bit sick of it. But it's up there in my favourite movies list for sure! I'm keen to check out some of the other movies you guys have mentioned :D
Coach Carter (trailer, IMDB). Samuel L. Motherfuckin' Jackson plays a former basketball player who comes to the school he graduated from to coach its basketball team, all the while trying to give the young men a chance of reaching college where they barely have any - against the heavy opposition of the school board and parents. It's a touching story about love (many types of it), respect, sacrifice and hard work. Yesterday was the third time I rewatched it; no doubt, I will again later in a few months or years. It has some of the most proper moral lessons included and never reaches where it can't handle. Given that the movie is based on the true story of Ken Carter (and Sam Jackson even looks like the guy), it becomes even more inspirational because of how it ends - not in fairy tale fashion, which is a rare thing to see.
That's awesome. Never heard of it but it is on the list now. Thanks.
Cool Hand Luke. Saw it for the first time in my high school film literature class and must've seen it another 1000 times (perhaps a little exaggeration there, but you get the idea) since.
Probably Hot Fuzz. It's my go-to movie when I need cheering up. It's just a perfect blend of action and comedy and the build up to the climax is amazing.
The Big Lebowskii. Because it's better every time you watch it.
The Godfather, and Saving Private Ryan. My dad was a big fan of the Godfathers and when he showed me the first and second I was hooked. Saving Private Ryan has a special place in my heart because it was really the last movie I ever watched with my uncle before he passed.
