Comic-con is pretty cool this year, but I still don't know how to feel about this movie...I'm honestly very nervous for this one. How do you feel about how DC is sort of trying to combat Marvel's commanding lead with the superhero genre?
I have no problem with the "serious comic book movie" formula DC is going with. In fact, I embrace it. I care a lot more about movies that grab emotionally or cognitively than those that seek to entertain first with spectacle or humor (unless I'm watching something that is meant to be a comedy). I've enjoyed the Avengers movies and the MCU, sure. But they haven't stuck with me like Nolan's Batman trilogy, and I'm hardly a Nolan fan boy. I'd only say The Avengers, GotG, and The Winter Soldier are very good movies of the lot. None are great like TDK, to me. I'd even place Batman Begins over most. This looks like it's going to look at Superman and Batman from interesting perspectives. It also hopefully is emotionally captivating with a strong narrative. I didn't like Man of Steel that much, but I'm cautiously optimistic for this. I'm actually even a little hyped.
DC is supposed to be the bright, cheery, optimistic comic company and Marvel is supposed to be the grounded, realistic company devoted to grown men running around in colored long johns. Not in the movies though since Warner put all the chips on Zack Snyder. The success of the Dark Knight movies is DC's reason for being unable to make a good movie. Batman can easily exist on his own in a film that takes itself pretty seriously. That doesn't mean you can add other underpants perverts to that formula and get the same results. Marvel is fully aware of how silly the whole thing is and that's why they make good, fun popcorn movies and Warner think desaturating the color palette is visual artistry.
I think DC lead the way with the BAtman reboots. They rode a good gap between a "comic book movie" and a real movie. I'm just not sure this will have the same ability.
My biggest problem with this is that they are trying to recreate the Batman v Superman fight from Dark Knight Returns. In the comic Batman and Superman have known each other for years and are good friends. Superman ultimately holds back because of this. In this movie, Superman (not knowing Bats) shouldn't give two shits about completely disabling Batman. But of course it won't happen like that.
