- Major decisions are expected as soon as Monday, as the U.S. Supreme Court works its way through several cases still pending before it closes out its calendar for the 2014-2015 term.
Definitely going to be some interesting rulings. A lot of big issues here, mainly the same sex marriage one. I'm definitely happy that the supreme court has finally taken a case on it, but I think either way it goes I am going to end up being conflicted between wanting gay marriage to be legal nationwide and wanting to preserve the rights of the states.
Are you conflicted that segregation isn't permitted on a state by state basis? It wasn't until 1968 that the court upheld that it was unconstitutional to do so. I think the time has come to make the same such declaration that discrimination against homosexuals is equally abhorrent.
I actually am a little bit. It never even crossed my mind until I took an intro government course this last year. Segregation is very clearly wrong, as well as discrimination against homosexuals, but sometimes I get stuck in my head trying to unravel the distinction between what rights should belong to which levels of government, whether the loose interpretation of the 14th amendment contradicts its original intent (or the original intent of separation of rights between the federal and state levels in the original amendments and articles), as well as the broad use of the commerce clause to justify the Civil Rights Act of 1964. While yeah, I do think it is high time to do something about discrimination, it is the means by which is should be done where I become conflicted whether or not we are following our own rules we set for ourselves for who gets to decide what.
