Just got done seeing this movie for the first time and I have to agree with you Cam, there's not a single likable character which isn't necessarily a bad thing (have you seen Glengarry Glen Ross), but to me Gone Girl was a very flat film for a Fincher film. Visually he still accomplishes what he usually does via mise-en-scene and in particular the viewing angles he uses, but outside of that the film was not visually appealing to me. It was easy to get bored and tired of the settings. Then there's the story and dialogue, both of which I found to be really sub-par. All the scenes where Nick and Amy interacted were hard to sit through, the script seemed so ham-fisted and in your face with "these people are bad and crazy" that it took me out of the film.
