Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. -William Ernest HenleyOut of the night that covers me,
Lately, I'm not sure. It's a very lonely sensation.
To love another is the only thing worthwhile in our lives. Everything else is superfluous. And yet, we worry so much about our jobs and our checking accounts and, most important, how we appear to our fellow Man. We worry less about the wasp in the chickencoop and the rest of the ugliness that surrounds us. Our time here is, in my opinion, laughably pointless. Depends on how much you've had to drink I guess. MY point is, I'm always fascinated by how seriously We take ourselves. Thompson had it right. You buy the ticket and take the ride. No more, no less. The only thing worth fighting for is someone to share the journey with.
You make a good point. I've been very depressed lately and sometimes I fear she is the only thing holding me together. It's not healthy. Selfish too. I appreciate you calling me out. I guess I was just trying to say Man is not an island. I don't do well trapped in my own mind.
I completely understand what you mean with your original post, but don't you think that loving and accepting ourselves and being happy are the most important things? You can never escape you. If you can be contented with your own company, then I'm certainly envious!
I believe that too many generous people get taken advantage of. I believe that it's worth risking being taken advantage of to be generous. I believe that there are alien civilizations in our galactic neighborhood I believe that bacon is great!
- Lots of effort goes into building websites that would work quite well as static pages. - The above line can be generalized by the following: We are really bad at frugally deploying technology. - Discomfort doesn't exclude happiness. - Millions of perfectly ripe Mulberries go uneaten every year. - Your average person is a bad driver. - I am a terrible driver. - Pen and paper rpgs can be great for people with social anxiety. It's a social encounter with structure. - The protagonist in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is kind of a dick. - When I say I believe these things, I mean that these are thoughts that I carry around in my head. I use them to try and make the world make sense. - That may not be a wise use of my time.
I believe in my sports teams blindly. That's just how I do it, I never root for others teams and I really don't stop watching even if they are losing. I believe in some game day superstitious. In the back of my mind I know its not logical but its just fun that way.
Out side of college football and basketball, I don't put blind faith in much and I am never superstitious.
Mostly, I just believe in Joe Pesci: edit: he gets a little anti-religious after the Joe Pesci thing. not for everyone.
What a funny, smart and brave entertainer. The best.
Let me preface this by saying I love George Carlin. I think my only problem with him is the same problem I have with every famous opinionated person; and it's not even really about them, it's about the people who cite them, or see them as above reproach. In performance, Carlin is a mirror in which those who grew up in strict religious families and are now athiest (or antithiest) can see themselves. Because what he says fits in their world view, he is somehow above reproach. When someone who is religious posts content from someone who fits into their world view, that person is scrutinized to death, all flaws pointed out. But these same people will never do that to Carlin, who in many ways occupies the same space as Televangelists. I mean, start that clip i posted from the beginning. without the laugh track, is anything really that funny? or is it just straight criticism and ridicule of religion said in a "funny" tone of voice? Carlin is a complicated character for me because of what he represents to other people - Just like Bob Marley, or Richard Strauss.
Yes.I mean, start that clip i posted from the beginning. without the laugh track, is anything really that funny?
I believe we are unable to achieve equilibrium. Everything is a hierarchy, even when on the surface, it shouldn't be. Why do we feel compelled to compare things and judge them until one is inevitably deemed better than the other?
I believe that all human beings are "smart." Smart just means that you can remember facts, people, events and places and recognize them again later. Intelligence, however, is what is variable in humanity. Intelligence is the ability to take the imputed data that makes you "smart" and use it in a meaningful way. We as a people do a disservice by calling others dumb when they choose not to go to college, or be a stay at home parent, or play video games, read anime, watch TV etc. Intelligence is something that we can teach.
Very true. This reminds me of a quote: "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid."
