In a funk where it doesn't feel like anything exciting is happening. No plans for spring break later this month, no new exciting things happening in life, no plans for making something exciting happen because what's the point when I'm gone in 4 months, it's this weird flux between being in college and moving on to what's next where my mind is between the two spaces (I guess it's a bit dissociative) and feels like I'm never going to amount to anything. Doing some prep work by redoing a lot of my wardrobe which is coming along nicely and trying to figure out if I should just buy a used car here and drive cross-country or buy a plane ticket and buy a car once I'm out west.

Anybody here drive clear across the country before? Seems like a fun adventure. mk is there a way to make draft text not be orange/can I have an option? Maybe it's just me but my eyes don't seem to be a big fan of reading a block of orange text.

Yes. Yes.

What was your experience like?

It was pretty rad, man. When you've been driving all night in crazy (really crazy, remember for the rest of my life crazy) fog through Kentucky and the sun rises and it turns out West Virginia is beautiful... And then up into the hills of Shenandoah and finally you hit the ocean. I really liked that trip. I was with a couple friends, but normally I travel solo because I like being alone in new places.

I've also been west. I prefer driving west, like mainlining the Beat generation, except my car is too nice. And the sun sets in front of you, which is awful but also amazing in big sky country. And the geology is about a thousand times more interesting. The clouds. Quieter, way more semis on the freeways.

I fucking love to drive. Next week I'm flying to Iceland to do a road trip there, which is slightly complicated. If I had my way I'd simply drive to Iceland. Never forget.

If you're on the fence about doing it, read Blue Highways and you won't be anymore.

Never heard of Blue Highways but there are a couple of copies at the library here so I know what I'm reading next now, thanks!

is that a coded reference to our IRC chat?

That sounds like a great trip, I'd pass on the California part of it for now though but...it's so tempting. But as I'm saying to mk the thing holding me back is the having a reliable enough vehicle to make it work, mostly. Would still have to figure out how to get my possessions from East to West too.

It's either do that, stay east and go to Solid Sound because holy fuck thenewgreen the lineup was just announced and it's incredible and if you haven't seen it you need to. Or say screw it to all of the above and take the path of least resistance and just fly west...but seeing things like Rushmore and Old Faithful and whatever else...not an opportunity a person has every day...

T-Dog, no Blisters?

I'm going to try my damnedest to be there this year, but it's looking rough....

I've done it a couple of times. Once it was from Michigan to Seattle to San Diego and back. IMO it's worth doing at least once. It gave me a new perspective on the US.

mk is there a way to make draft text not be orange/can I have an option?

If anything, I'd like to reduce the number of toggles we have. If there seems a consensus on something like the shoutout blue, I'd be game. But I'm not too keen on expanding the color palate. One benefit of the orange might be to induce people to complete the drafts they have. :)

It certainly jumps out at you and makes it hard to forget that you started a draft, I'll give you that.

Did you go with people when you did that? There's a lot of logistical nightmares involved with this like: buying the car and being okay with throwing 3k miles on it right off the bat, moving items with me, all that. Plus hotels and gas and food which I'm assuming cost a ton of money to travel all that way.

It seems fun but like a lot of time, effort, and money to make it happen.

On the longest trip, there were three of us. We used a friend's car, and split the gas three ways. We would stay at a in a campground in a tent every other night, and sleep in the car at rest stops on the others. It was very cheap. Most days I ate canned peas and cold spagettios.

If you are moving one way. I'd just bring a tent, and sleep in your car half the time. Campgrounds are nice because they have showers. You might be able to get a beater car, and sell it at your destination.
