- These discoveries have pointed to a complex process of sex determination, in which the identity of the gonad emerges from a contest between two opposing networks of gene activity. Changes in the activity or amounts of molecules (such as WNT4) in the networks can tip the balance towards or away from the sex seemingly spelled out by the chromosomes.
Intersex people have been trying to publicize this shit for years, not to mention everyone outside of the gender binary. Allow me to Introduce you to Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. Simplified, these are people who can't process tesosterone properly. This means that someone Genetically XY can develop like this: That's Eden Atwood, BTW. There are even documented cases of XY women carrying children to term. Here's a good one. I love to pull this shit out when people say "why can't we just assign bathrooms by chromosomes!?" as if it would fix the problem of Trans people and restrooms (specifically people thinking that men will dress as women just to get into a girls bathroom and rape people. News flash, by the way, they don't even bother with the dress, so leave trans women alone, we just want to go pee.)
Another interesting case are the Guevedoche of the Dominican Republic. In a particular villiage, twelve out of thirteen families have hermaphroditic traits [NSFW images].
o_0 It's one thing to realize gender isn't binary, scientifically. But what do you do, when you've lived half your life and find out 'Oh, by the way, you're biologically like half male?'Halfway through her fifth decade and pregnant with her third child, the woman learned for the first time that a large part of her body was chromosomally male
Not much else to do but keep on living it, I guess. EDIT: I think this sounds flippant, but I do mean it. If she doesn't experience gender dysphoria and everyone around her considers her a woman, what else is there to do but keep going as before?
I suspect how difficult that is depends on how entrenched you are in gender-binary culture. On the other hand, those most entrenched in gender binarism are probably the same people who don't highly value science. Or, you could make fun of your husband for being gay? Start campaigning for half-gay marriage? Buy some snails and start referring to them as "my people."
