The Long Losts - Scary Songs to Play in the Dark. I missed this back in October. Having seen it, I'm really surprised no one had done an album with that title and cover before.
My months have been spent further and further away from what I used to listen to regularly. Right now, it's purely bluegrass and Mongolian throat singing. I'm really into the throat singing. Huun-Huur-Tu is all I've listened to for three days, and it's immeasurably relaxing or uplifting depending on the song. And for the bluegrass, we have a fantastic radio station out of the university I work for: 105.5 WAMU Bluegrass Country. The DJs are all distinct in the styles they play and all know the works and artists they play intimately. It's a fantastic cross-section of American culture and history as well when they talk about the roots of what's being played. You can stream the station, if you're interested. http://bluegrasscountry.org/ But I've also been listening to the big names lately too. They had Dom Flemons on for a mini-concert and interview and he's such a fantastically knowledgeable and likeable guy. So I've been doing a Carolina Chocolate Drops binge. It's so happy and musically rich and grounding. I can't help but just feel good about life.
Kraftwerk - The man machine - been on a Kraftwerk binge this week after watching an awesome Kraftwerk documentary. I could have chosen any one of a hundred tracks so this is just a random sample of 1. A Winged Victory For The Sullen - Atomos X - from Atomos modern/ambient/electronic classical? No idea but I do like it. Caribou - Julia Brightly - from Our Love Old school dance music feel.
Hypnagog!
psychedelic trance dance music cut up with jazzy piano rhythms, glitchy sounds, and quotes. I think the album shines best with a full listen but "folded wave" is a good stand alone song. It's kinda far out and noisy at times but it's funky so it works out for me.
I threw a birthday party on Friday for my wife, we blasted music all night long. It was a blast, literally. We started with Vetiver And then went to Discover
Giraffage opened for Porter Robinson when he was here. He's cool. The whole EP is good for working. Most recent wilin' out track: Dating Ariana Grande has done something to Big Sean, I swear this shit can't be a coincidence, that verse is ridiculous. 'Out There' track of the week: This song does not fit Dragon's Dogma. Like, at all. But it's so addictive, holy crap. I'm sad they took it out of Dark Arisen. My sister and I have been randomly shouting "THE WIND IS PUSHING MEEEEE" at each other all weekend.
Frankie Teardrop has been on rotation all week. A bit of Springsteen influence in their music, which isn't too far off from Nude Beach. Meth Wax is weird but not that weird when you remember he lives in Athens, GA. Roommate showed me him this morning and I dig it.
