Watsky - 4 AM Monday
"If I just get fifteen minutes I'm gonna stay myself, and when that sixteenth minute comes then I won't hate myself"
I have always loved this one : And these children
that you spit on
as they try to change their worlds
are immune to your consultations.
They're quite aware
of what they're going through
- David Bowie
The other day I was driving with my daughter in the car. We had some children's music playing. Between songs she said, "daddy, will you put on some David Bowie?" -I remained calm and simply said, "sure honey." But inside I was as proud as I've ever been. I teared up, no joke. She really likes Changes but her favorite is Queen Bitch, which she knows as "Queen Bee." But great pic Brian, I've always loved that lyric.
I'll bet she would like all of 'Ziggy Stardust' too, that's my favourite Bowie album.
I bet she would, her dad certainly does. That was my first Bowie album as a kid and the song ZSatSFM was one of the first I ever learned how to play on the guitar. Best guitar tone/sound ever.
She needs to see this (everyone does, really :-)
Staring down into a heartless sea Can't face life on a razor's edge Nothing's what you thought it would be
All of us get lost in the darkness Dreamers learn to steer by the stars All of us do time in the gutter Dreamers turn to look at the cars - Rush (The Pass) And now you're trembling on a rocky ledge
Deep meaningful lyrics abound. I'll take a minute away from my Leonard Cohen binge, and spend some time thinking about K'naan lyrics: K'naan "Take a Minute" And any man who knows a thing knows, he knows not a damn, damn thing at all,
And everytime I felt the hurt and I felt the givin' gettin' me up off the wall,
I'm just gonna take a minute and let it ride,
I'm just gonna take a minute and let it breeze,
I'm just gonna take a minute and let it ride,
I'm just gonna take a minute and let it breeze,
How did Mandela get the will to surpass the everyday,
When injustice had him caged and trapped in every way,
How did Ghandi ever withstand the hunger strikes and all,
Didn't do it to gain power or money if I recall,
It's to give; I guess I'll pass it on,
Mother thinks it'll lift the stress of babylon,
Mother knows, my mother she suffered blows,
I don't know how we survived such violent episodes,
I was so worried, and hurt to see you bleed,
But as soon as you came out the hospital you gave me sweets,
Yeah, they try to take you from me,
But you still only gave 'em some prayers and sympathy,
Dear mama, you helped me write this, by showing me to give is priceless.
Oh yeah, I take inspiration from the most heinous of situations,
Creating medication out my own tripulations.
Dear Africa, you helped me write this, by showing me to give is priceless.
Nothing is perfect man, that's what the world is,
All I know is,
I'm enjoying today.
You know, 'cause it isn't everybody that you get to give.
God, I love K'naan. Have you heard his new album (Country, God, or the Girl?)? It's fantastic. And if you dig K'naan, check out Emmanuel Jal. He's great too.
Thanks Galen. I'll check this out. You've only officially been here about three months, so you probably didn't see my K'naan blog. I picked up his latest CD, the moment it was available. Then I read his article in the New York Times apologizing for the lame lyrics. I disagree - I love it, but lately I've been listening to Dusty Foot Philosopher.
The lyrics that come to mind instantly for me are all written by David Bazan. He was/is a few bands: Pedro the Lion, Headphones, and now just tours as David Bazan. He has a handful of excellent albums, each with fantastic lyrics often about drinking, marriage and family, and corporate culture. If you don't know him, I'd try Control first. So he takes another drink
Cause watching the scenery bleed
into each similar scene
isn't as sweet
as it had been in his dream.
I hadn't heard of David Bazan or any of his bands before. Pedro the Lion has a great sound. Thanks for introducing me!
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
"So play the game, 'existence,' to the end.. of the beginning" The whole song is just revolutionary and it was 1966. Lennon stood on a mountain while paul and ring lay down the future.
This is a video sans words. Looks like they took down a lot of Beatless songs on the utubes so you're on your own to find a flac file/vinyl. But even without the words it paints a picture.
The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows (instrumental):
I don't really listen to lyrics (shame on me) and I listen to a lot of electric music anyway, but one particular lyric I've always liked is of one of my favorite japanese rock bands, Ellegarden, which have some songs in English. Mr. Clever she is fool enough to trust you Mr. Stupid you are not like anyone Mr. Famous I don't know your real name Mr. Tiny your dream is so big Mr. Clumsy what you've made is so art Mr. Doubtful don't you trust yourself at all I'm Mr. Complain Yeah my life is shit Give me something that's I'll never fail Give me something that I understand Give me something that I'll never lose again Hey Mr. Smiley do you smile when you are sad Mr. Crazy where is the border of sanity Mr. Jealous hope you don't have any secrets Mr. Money what do you want for next Christmas Mr. Perfect have you ever pulled it off I'm Mr. Complain Yeah my life is shit Give me something that I'll never fail Give me something that I understand Give me something that I'll never lose again You are not here You are not here You are not here beside me You are not here You are not here You are not here Yeah my life is shit Mr. Feather do you think you're really fly Mr. Clever she is fool enough to trust you
Give me something that I'll never fail Give me something that I understand Give me something that I'll never lose again For me, this song shows that no matter on who we look up or down to, it's not always how it looks like on the first sight or on the surface. Or if you think some of those things of yourself, it makes you question your beliefs and put them into perspective. To me, it just feels like it's delivering the message "screw all those superficial things, just make the best out of the situation", and I like optimistic outlooks and things that make you question things, especially your own view/perspective :) ("Middle Of Nowhere" is another song by them which I also like quite a bit, in case you you like them)Hey Mr. Feather do you think you're really fly
I love song lyrics and without the ability to write them, I'd be in a constant stupor of depression. When I was about 12 years old, I heard the Beatles song I am the Walrus for the first time. It was then that I realized that both music and lyrics could be far more than what I had previously considered. The lyrics still take me back to being a boy in my room staring at my boom box, fixated on the odd sounds, lyrics, imagery and textures this song gave me. It changed me forever: "I Am The Walrus" I am he as you are he as you are me
And we are all together
See how they run like pigs from a gun see how they fly
I'm crying
Sitting on a cornflake waiting for the van to come
Corporation teeshirt, stupid bloody Tuesday
Man you been a naughty boy. You let your face grow long
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen
I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob
Mister City Policeman sitting, pretty little policemen in a row
See how they fly like Lucy in the sky, see how they run
I'm crying, I'm crying
I'm crying, I'm crying
Yellow matter custard dripping from a dead dog's eye
Crabalocker fishwife pornographic priestess
Boy you been a naughty girl, you let your knickers down
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen
I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob
Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun
If the sun don't come
You get a tan from standing in the English rain
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen
I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob goo goo goo goo joob
Expert textpert choking smokers
Don't you think the joker laughs at you? (Ha ha ha! He he he! Ha ha ha!)
See how they smile like pigs in a sty, see how they snied
I'm crying
Semolina pilchard climbing up the Eiffel Tower
Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna
Man you should have seen them kicking Edgar Alan Poe
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen
I am the walrus, goo goo goo joob goo goo goo joob
Goo goo goo joob goo goo goo joob
Goo gooooooooooo jooba jooba jooba jooba jooba jooba
Jooba jooba
Jooba jooba
Jooba jooba
For me it was hearing "Boris the Spider" on The Who's Happy Jack album. I think I still have that in vinyl. To everyone that I've promised vinyl to: I've been talking to record store owners asking them for mailing envelopes for vinyl. They all say -- don't do it. It will wreck the album. Then they tell me about broken albums they received in the mail. So sadly, it's not going to happen. I know I promised you a couple of albums, also ButterflyEffect and someone else whose snail mail address is sitting here on my desk.It was then that I realized that both music and lyrics could be far more than what I had previously considered.
That's an interesting moment to reflect on (a post of its own someday).
Just FYI, the album was "Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy". Great album, with a great name. [edit] Wikipedia says this about that title :Meaty: Daltrey, who was quite fit at the time, Beaty: Moon, for his drumming, Big: Entwistle, who was a large person, often referred to as "The Ox" (lending his nickname to the instrumental of the same name), and Bouncy: Townshend, who jumped about quite acrobatically during performances.
Very cool, I had no idea that album existed. Sweet cover art.
I'm not sure I understand your question, though. What do you mean? Unusual songs, maybe? As a kid, I was a big Dr Demento fan, so any kind of 'weird' music was interesting to me.
What do you mean?
I mean mold-breaking songs. Earlier in the thread thenewgreen wrote this: When I was about 12 years old, I heard the Beatles song I am the Walrus for the first time. It was then that I realized that both music and lyrics could be far more than what I had previously considered.
There are many ways of "breaking the rules" -- weird music, as you say, does that.
Ah, I see.
The first one that comes to mind is "We Have Heaven", by Yes (Fragile album). In that song, Jon Anderson laid down many vocal tracks, and sang harmony (and a 'round' format), with himself - no other vocalist. Kinda blew my teen-aged mind a little. Also, in the same song, they did something really cool. The song ends abruptly with a slamming-door sound, followed by footsteps walking away. Later, on the other side of the album, after the last song, we hear the door open, and "We have Heaven" finishes. So very cool.
I hope you still have it, it makes me sad when people dump all of their records for one reason or another. No worries on the record! I still listen to those CDs you sent over!I think I still have that in vinyl.
What? No vinyl? I think you should just let me square cash you some money and I'll pay for you to nicely pack it up and first class mail your collection to me. I will listen to it. Often. Name your price seniorita
It's not a song lyric, but I can't resist: OK, now I feel bad, so I actually do have some song lyrics. Ardie Collins - Chase the Stratosphere and den in a forest filled with friends We do tend to romanticise and no one’s ever found out how to pause, as simple as it was Now all they are are thoughts And though I am in danger of whimsy of the highest degree, I want to climb a tree And we’ll climb hard And we’ll climb high And we will breathe A better sky And it will taste Of our old dreams And it is laced With history And we will chase The stratosphere And we will force our way Out of here PS If you dug that TED talk, check out the follow-up from earlier this year. Amazing. You will always long for a time of plastic dinosaurs
