I'm sick, on top of that our Childcare provider called in sick this morning too. So, it's me and the kids today. My daughter is playing with her dolls in her room. My son and I are sitting on the living room rug listening to Leonard Cohen. He seems to dig it.
What about you? What is your scene at this moment like?
Wasoxygen: international man of mystery. Safe travels pal, that's a badass view.
I miss the Red Line. Where were you going when you took the pic?
Todd Barry has a joke some where about baby t-shirts with band names on it. I'm paraphrasing here: "But honey, If we don't make our baby wear that Rolling Stones T-Shirt, how is everyone gonna know how good my record collection is?"
We have two different Beatles onesies for him and we didn't buy either of them. People just buy them for us. That said, I did buy him a Wilco onesie... so "guilty as charged." how is everyone gonna know how good my record collection is?"
-It's getting pretty damed good! I better buy him some more onesies. Do they sell T-Rex onesies? If not, they should.
"Who needs a T.V. when you got a T-Rex." -David Bowie
One of the first songs 11 year old me learned to play on the guitar. You know how many chords are in that damn song? I still love playing that one.
Surprise, surprise... Steve sat behind the "hot" moms. I've got a couple years till such events but honestly, I look forward to them.
hahaha…. well - I guess there are a couple of factors: 1 - I'm married to a woman about 8.7x as hot as any of the pictured women.
2 - I may not find them physically attractive - but they are really cool, so it feels weird saying they're not hot…. because personality wise - they're really cool.
3 - I think I just felt weird/shallow about judging the hotness of some moms at my kids' school.
4 - I have now officially overanalyzed what was certainly a joke from TNG.
Heck yeah! That reminds me. I had lunch with a friend I hadn't seen in a long time and talked to her about doing a collaborative thing and then later tonight I had drinks with another friend I am trying to do another collaborative thing with and I had this idea of trying to create a small collaborative network aimed at playing with and off of each other. I think it could be cool to get a group of motivated, creative types together to support each other and to combine efforts as kind of a generative thing. So far, we've got the thing you and I have been toying with, a pottery/poetry thing that is in progress and a poetry/photo thing I'm trying to get off the ground. Just an idea, but maybe it could be fruitful and more importantly, fun?
Hell yeah, bring it. I'm down for whatever. I think there is a TON of talent on Hubski and we should tap in to that as much as we can. This place is at its best when we are collaborating with one another imo. By all means invite other creatives to the party. I was thinking, in light of mk's recent declaration to begin painting again, about posting a painting challenge. It's one of those art forms that anyone can attempt with little investment. We could have a collaborative painting, poetry, music project. The possibilities are endless. Alright, I'm off to bed.
Nice! We are going to have to get you one of the new Hubski stickers (which I have a good authority are about to arrive) for that computer.
Slangin'... dildz...? I keep thinking of Skwisgaar saying "them's dildos". However he is only interested in the GMILFs, while the accoutrements in the back of your picture are eternally 21.
Looks like Guitar Center yakked on my workspace carpet. This is godawful embarrassing posted in the same space as thenewgreen's clean living room and kleinbl00's orderly command stations. God, everybody's day looks so interesting... what a great post idea, TNG.
Hah- three words: mise en place. Not just good for the kitchen. This level of mess generally means heightened productivity though, which is nice. But after this bout, my workspace is due for a colonic.
My current project has the team helping out at a summer camp while they host a high school band for band camp. In about half an hour, 300 hungry kids and their instructors are about to storm in for dinner. I wash the dishes. It's a lot, but can be zen like, and this project is only three weeks long. If I hit a stride, hours can pass rather quickly. It's really made me appreciate all the dishwashers I've worked with. Please observe the pitcher of iced coffee on the shelf, looks like I need a refill.
I always liked Thich Nhat Hahn's writings about zen and washing dishes. If I am incapable of washing dishes joyfully, if I want to finish them quickly so I can go and have dessert and a cup of tea, I will be equally incapable of doing these things joyfully. With the cup in my hands, I will be thinking about what to do next, and the fragrance and the flavor of the tea, together with the pleasure of drinking it, will be lost.
That is beautiful. Take joy in all things, and don't avoid the difficult or tedious, embrace them, meet them head on. Thank you
Thank you for sharing that, so true. Washing dishes, or any activity that is usually considered mundane or dull reminds me of this Tagore quote. Here it is as read by my grandfather Achim, who introduced me to it. Here it is first in German and then in English: The action is joy!
That was great! Did your Opa just now oblige us with this translation?
No, that was from a long while ago and was used for a #tngpodcast and honestly, I don't recall which one...
I wash the dishes. It's a lot, but can be zen like
-I know exactly what you mean. I washed dishes in college at a very busy restaurant and realized two things. 1. Any work you can bury yourself in and get lost in can be cathartic. 2. And the dishwasher is perhaps the most important job in a busy restaurant. No dishes equals no food.
Muji's wooden hexagonal ball point. I am lucky to live about a mile from the Muji store in Hollywood. They also carry these amazingly useful rings of paper slips that fit perfectly on a key chain or carabiner.
I saw all the Nixie clocks and thought, meh -- lots of work for something tied to a desk and kinda boring. I want to make something portable, something fit for Hallowe'en. So I decided: 1d10 (that's a single ten-sided die, not 80% of a Leet idiot). I got the idea of tying it to a simple program run from an Arduino Mini Pro or similar MCU on a board. The problem is that it needs a high-voltage driver and BCD decoder (usually an SN74141 IC). Neon requires about 170 to 200 volts to light up the cathode grid, but almost no current. Your typical micro controller unit -- such as Atmel's ATmega and ATTiny lines, PIC, Intel 8051 old-school -- freaks out above 3.3 or 5 volts. So you need one low-voltage chip to think up the number to be displayed, then a high-voltage IC to toggle the cathodes and hand the big volts to the anode. My goal is a device I can fit in my hand. I would shake it (accelerator) to trigger a random number generator program (or put out a specific number based on certain shake pattens). Then let the numbers whirl for a few seconds before slowing down to a final answer. Then I could say "the oracle says six! What does that MEAN? I don't question the gods. You'll figure it out."
My room is a bit of a mess. I just moved in, finally back for my senior year. Luckily I got the largest room in the house, and realized that the window unit air conditioner that i fixed last year for a smaller room is not good enough to cool my room. Oh well, hopefully I can find a different one to cool it down for the time being until fall comes in strong.
Sitting at my reading/writing desk. Lower tables than my big desk. This is also where I play any sort of movies or games, and anything I do with the bass guitar gets done over here as well. I just got off work, so right now I'm watching Inglourious Basterds while I sort out some stuff. That thing at the top is my chalkboard, where I plot all of my writing.
So cool. You are an organized fella. Your room/shelves always look clean. I have cables, mic's and crap all over my studio area. The difference (one of many) between a novice and a pro.
http://imgur.com/dh39Z26 Watching this guy all week! Hollywood's alright for a while, anyway.
Good to see your mug pal! I was recently reading a book that reminded me of you -'ll send it your way.

In line @ DFW. Fun times. http://imgur.com/SMqjcnA Layover on the way home from college visits in the Northeast. Not looking forward to being back home - I would've preferred to just stay in New England.
What schools are the front runners? Also, if you open the image in a tab and then copy paste it shows up.
Colgate has some great teachers, but I've seen its students fall deeply into alcoholic torpor. Beautiful part of a beat-up Madison County. Why not Binghamton? Same price as New Paltz, better education, BEST RADIO STATION EVAR (that's WHRW, 90.5 FM). -philosophy '96
Can I cheat and post an audio scene instead? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17975/SoundScapes/Ocean.mp3 Looped for meditative purposes. It was dusk, the beach was dotted with a few tourists, a couple of young 'uns had lit a fire, the first stars twinkled.
The sound of the waves crashing and coming to shore is such a soothing one. I think it's pretty well universally accepted as one of the greatest sounds. Why is this? Do you think it's an intrinsic thing? Is it because water is essential to life and therefore we celebrate its close proximity? Is it because it's repetitious and provides a sort of audible motion by which we relax? Is it because the sound of the waves crashing is also the sound of land and therefore the mariner in us knows that we are "home" again? Whatever the reason, I enjoyed listening to this. It was a stange juxtaposition to the fussing baby in the background so I paused it and re-listened later, while it was more peaceful here. Glad you shared it! I hope you enjoyed the moment. I did.
It may also be related to the rushing sounds of the womb, allusions to which are supposed to soothe fussing babies. Next time stick it on speakers for Junior. Perhaps there is a deeper, neurological, pattern recognition related reason; the brain relaxing into pure white noise wherein there is no risk of stimuli that provoke fight/flight responses? i've started to carry a recorder around with me all the time and snapshot soundscapes as well as photographs. I'll post more if there are any of great interest.
I really feel like sound plays a much larger role in our lives than we tend to give thought to. The sound of a place can give us a sense of how large or how small it is and the kinds of things that inhabit that space. For example, the quiet of a forest is much different than the quiet of a meadow and the quiet of a suburban street is different than that of a city street. I also periodically record soundscapes so I'd be interested in hearing from you.
Please do post more. Having both audio and photography from the same scene would make for a really cool #combopost. It may also be related to the rushing sounds of the womb, allusions to which are supposed to soothe fussing babies. Next time stick it on speakers for Junior.
-absolutely, it is one of the 4 "S"'s: shushing, swaying, sucking and swaddling that are proven to calm even the fussiest newborns.
Here's another possibility.... http://holometer.fnal.gov/faq.html "What does holographic noise sound like? Holographic noise is purely "white noise": it has the same amplitude at all frequencies."
