It's funny that you mention NPR, it is currently WUNC's pledge drive and at 3:00 I am scheduled to go in and answer phones. I donate money to them too but I really feel like I've helped when I go in and donate some time. It's only 2 hours, but it's fun.

The proposal I am making deals with the fact that people tend to give more to individuals than institutions. Lets say you give $100 to the DIA, would you be likely to give more if you knew that it was going towards a particular 10 year old, underprivileged aspiring artist so that they could take art classes at the DIA? What if at $200 you would ensure that the kid got art lessons and that once a month for a year he/she would send you an example of their progress? Would you give more?

Probably. Because like I said, I like the immediacy of donating to art/culture organizations. Its more rewarding to me to see that my money has had some tangible effect on a cause I care about. If you, say, donate to an NGO or to a cancer research organization, you have no evidence that you've done any good, just their good word, which isn't always as good as they say.

What if you had two choices within a $200 personal charitable budget:

1. Donate $100 to the DIA and $100 to NPR -both awesome.

2. Donate $200 to a little kid so they can have school books in Ecuador. By the way, you know the kids name and he/she will write you letters of their progress quarterly.

Tough call. My heart says I'd probably go with #2. I'm a sucker for education.
