The David Reimer/John Money case is really messed up. It get's brought up a lot in the context of discussing gender but you might want to read this about it: Source Also I recommended a book here if anyone is interested in learning about the construction of gender differences. In 2000, David and his twin brother (Brian) alleged that Dr. Money had taken numerous naked photos of the twins during their treatment and had forced them to engage in "sexual play" at age 7. In 2002, David's twin brother was found dead from an overdose of the drugs used to treat his schizophrenia. On 5 May 2004, shortly after being asked by his wife for a separation, Reimer committed suicide. Reimer's parents have stated that they believe Dr. Money's methodology was responsible for the deaths of both of their sons.
This is a very good 101-style video on a pretty damn complex topic! I'm surprised I had never heard of this series before. I'm really glad people are talking about it more and I'm eager to see a generation exploring what gender is and what it means to them. Even just toeing the academic waters on the subject will show you how flimsy the whole notion of the binary is. I have to give props for the reference to Judith Butler - her work is very influential and pretty much must-read material. As an aside, I would also be wary of tagging this with "sexuality", as that doesn't have anything to do with gender issues and is a whole other discussion.
Lindsay Doe knows her shit. I think she has a doctorate, but I forget. re: tagging this with sexuality, it was the most appropriate tag i could think of at 10:00pm. I'd change it but I can't. On the plus side it may bring some people who don't know what they're looking for or how to talk about the subject to this video.
