Back when I did high-end AV, Kaleidoscape was all the rage amongst the well-heeled. The concept is brutally simple: Your DVDs go on a server, where they're streamed to any TVs on your network. At the time, wi-fi was too slow; this was pure bitstream over gigabit. The systems cost on the order of $80 grand.
They shouldn't have. They should have been stupid cheap - you put in your DVD and you have it on a media center everywhere. Kinda like Boxee or XMBC, only without the wink wink nudge nudge. Yet there was never any overt system, available off the shelf, that would let you do this.
Now you know why.
The motion picture industry simply doesn't know what's good for them. Kaleidoscape could have revolutionized the way people enjoy content - not just nerds in the know, but your friends and neighbors. That, of course, is the first thing Hollywood needed and the last thing Hollywood wanted.
