As long as it's material suitable for posting at Hubski, and as long as that's not the only thing he's posting, I'm okay with it.

If someone wants to post his music videos or extracts from his books or whatnot, that's fine. It's still "sharing thoughtful information and conversation." Posting links to ads for his homemade soap or artisanal cheese or microbrew isn't so okay, because it's not "sharing thoughtful information and conversation."

Purely commercial spam links probably aren't going to get much attention anyhow. Really, I'd be more concerned that, if Hubski grows large enough to attract general interest, it will also attract PR flacks promoting their clients' agendas while pretending that they're just "contributing to the discussion."

The detrimental costs remain, e.g. server loads, turning off new (interesting) members, (and possibly the broken windows effect) etc., even if you choose to go the info bubble route. I think NotPhil's position is reasonable.

I never said otherwise, it's very reasonable. It will be interesting to see how it scales but still, I think the community will be the filter. We can avoid spam posts but comments will be more difficult. We can always flag the spammers though. That said, there is a gray area between a spammer and someone that is genuinely proud of their microbrewery and wants feedback from our community ... Distinguishing between the two will be a challenge.

Really? I don't think it's difficult to discern what kind of agenda a particular post has. Especially once a user has developed a pattern of submittals, it becomes clear pretty easily. I think the majority of people on here know when they're being sold something.

Perhaps you're right. By the way, did you know that you can now download my last album for free from my website? It's easy: http://thenewgreenmusic.com/

;)

I didn't say you did :) Show and tell is fine by me. Blog/site refs in bios is equally fine with me.

I should look at bios more, I never do.
